Link: Plax’s Guys Working On Plea Deal

by Corey Griffin on June 6th, 2009 at 10:45 am

It seems that we’re getting closer to a serious update on the Plaxico Burress legal front. His attorney is trying to negotiate a plea deal or trial delay in order to allow for Burress to suit up in 2009.

With 10 days to go before a critical appearance in Manhattan criminal court, the attorney for Plaxico Burress is working feverishly behind the scenes to find a negotiated settlement that would allow Burress to play football in 2009 — either by reaching a plea deal with minimal jail time or by postponing a possible trial until after the 2009 NFL season with the hopes of playing this fall, a source with knowledge of the case said Friday.

“Right now, everything is speculation, but I will know more on Monday,” Burress’ lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, said Friday.

While this is an update, it’s not exactly a fruitful one. It’s no secret that Plax’s agent and attorneys have been trying to figure out a way for the Pro Bowl wideout to remain a viable candidate for the 2009 season. However, the NY DA, mayor, and governor all seem dead set on Burress doing some sort of jail time and if he does find himself behind bars at all, that’s surely to earn a suspension from Roger Goodell and the league. Of course, after that, there’s also the issue of salary, Burress being in shape, and then, you know, the whole learning the offense thing. The more and more this goes on, the more I tend to think Burress won’t be a factor in 2009.

What do you guys think? Can Burress be a reasonable option if he’s got a short amount of time to work out with the team before the season starts? Or what if he’s not available til mid-season? I could be wrong, but I believe suspensions prohibit the player from working out at team facilities.

    No Burress.

He is going to jail anyway, and won’t be playing until next season. By then we can draft a wide receiver. He isn’t read now, and won’t be anytime soon.

Maybe in the middle of the season, but not in sept. If he does play I still think he’s gonna be a distraction where ever he goes, that is going to hang over him for a while

all the guys he played with supported him and wanted him back when he was on the brink of jail and guys on the jets want him.. he may get into it with the refs but on the field he seems fine, and off the field i’m sure he’s learned his lesson.. if u can get burress go for it, the only way this would work out is if the trial is delayed, plea deal=jail time=some kind of suspension… if its for a couple of games u still gotta get him

    We need Burress.

    Cotchery’s a possession reciever, not a legit #1.

Other than Crabtree’s undeniable tallent, the draft wasn’t really a viable solution, beacuse receivers take three years to develop in NFL.

There’s plenty of wide recievers with Plaxico’s stupidity off the field and selfishness in the locker room, but only one free agent with his tallent on the field.

Plax’s and Jets situation is similar to Randy Moss and Patsies. His damaged reputation will make his a free agent steel and fits our needs… such that we would go from a glaring hole to an All-Star stregth.

Who says Goodell won’t suspend Burris, regardless of the outcome of the criminal case?

Dean, I don’t agree with your comparison of Burress and Moss.. Burress is not anything like Moss. Moss has been and remains a huge downfield threat. Plax seems to make a lot of plays with his size and cutting ability. However, I don’t think of him like a Randy Moss, Anquan Boldin, Santana Moss stretch the field kind of guy.

And, frankly, I think we have enough possession type receivers. Flacco’s success was in some part to the bombs he threw downfield. Connect on one or two…

Burress would help any team. But a solid down the field no dropsie WR would help our particular team more.

Just got back from the Generation Jets Kids Clinic at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center in Florham Park, and it was awesome!! The whole place takes your breath away, not to mention the treatment the players and staff treated the kids and parents…. (Just wanted to share).

Anyway, this dude is done, and he is going to jail!
Like most of you I agree it would be sweet to have him on this team, but between the media, the court, and Mayor Mike he would be lucky if he gets a private cell.

Plax will get a plea deal that allows him to go to camp and play in 2009. Goodell will suspend him, but I’m not convinced that it will be for more than a game or two. Plax is a game changer. He’s obviously not too bright, but the Jets don’t need a genius. They need a bona fide no. 1 WR. Plax is just that and he’s exactly what the Jets need to round out their offense.
