Buzz: Jets Getting Wild for the Wildcat?

by Bassett on June 10th, 2009 at 5:13 pm

Other than the scathing Crowder rebuttal, Rich Cimini writes about today’s practice and notes that the Jets were seen running the Wildcat formation extensively today.

The Jets spent an inordinate amount of time working on the “Wildcat” formation. Makes sense. With versatile athletes like Leon Washington and Smith, it pays to have some gadget plays. O.C. Brian Schottenheimer has used both players in the past, allowing them to take direct snaps in shotgun, but this morning they devoted an entire period to the Wildcat.

Explaining his own use of the Wildcat, Ryan said it will help on two fronts: It’ll allow them to maximize the athleticism of Washington and Smith and it will help the defense to prepare for the formation. The Dolphins figure to use it more this season after drafting former West Virginia QB Pat White, a serious running threat.

Ryan did note that the Ravens shut it down pretty well last year, so it sounds like it’s not something the team will use extensively this season.  Even so, I think Ryan’s right to use it to get his defense familiarized on how to neutralize it, and with the personnel that the team has, I think they can run it to some effect. Smith and Washington have run it to some success in the past (see the at home 2007 Patriots game) and with the amount the team plans to run the ball, some wrinkles like the Wildcat will be welcome.

All told though, I don’t see it as something that I think is going to be transformative for this offense this season.

with the big question we have at QB, it can be a good idea to put in some wildcat offense to take the pressure of clemens/sanchez and to give defenses a dif. look/prepare for something else.

Don’t fret 108 – I’m sure Mort or Clayton will take their best guess and report it as fact for the 7PM sportscenter

    This can’t be right.

    28 million guaranteed makes sense.

5 yr at 28 million is a steal compared to what ryan got last season.

Off the subject (twice removed) in response to Channing’s last comment Rex said about Crowder “I’ve walked over tougher guys to get to a fight”.

    Gotta love it.

The wildcat. Yeah. It did a lot for Dolphins last year.

  13. avatar Dave says:

The Jets were destroying the Dolphins with similar plays to the wildcat before the Dolphins even used it. Leon destroyed the Dolphins with it back in ’07, the stomping of the Dolphins one of the few bright spots.

  14. Just a thought……

Lets try to not run it in the rain storm this time…

the REASON why the JETS were seen running the wildcat is so the DEFENSE can practice STOPPING it.
