How many years has Clemens been in the leauge? Enough, to have prepared himself to see any defense in the leauge. Not because he has been a back up for a couple of years he has no experience recognizing NFL defenses. Nobody is raving about Clemens the “Veteran” QB. Sanchez is the ONE everyone is talking about. Sanchez is the one blowing away everyone with how he has grasped the offense well for a 5 week old NFL QB. Clemens should be having no problem in practice, but I guess he is. Viva Sanchez, Viva la 2009 JETS.

All I keep reading is that Clemens has the edge because of his 4 years of experience in the system… Doesnt that pretty much mean that Sanchez has the edge? I mean come on. If Clemens is the guy, he needs to be beating Sanchez in the QB competition on a daily basis. Right now all im seeing is even statistics between the two. Thats not good enough Kellen. Its Sanchez time… im sorry Clemens, but you do hold a mean clipboard.

I doubt you would find a single person in Jets management and FO who would say anything other than Viva Sanchez. He’s their poster boy and they hope to ride him as far as they can.

To keep the owner happy, Rexy will do everything in his power to compress this kid’s learning process into as short a period of time as he humanly can. But as with every other learning process in the history of the world, it’ll actually will take as long as it is going to take. Period. Unless, of course, you’re prepared for the INTs and fumbles to start piling up by November.

I still have a very strong hunch that Clemens will be under center vs. Houston.

Remember, Flacco played when the Ravens had no other options. Injuries forced Baltimore’s hand. Good for him, he stepped up and delivered. But he was not The Plan going in.

It’s pretty clear Woody & The Jets will do everything in their power to let this kid take the reins, but I seriously doubt he’s gonna be NFL-ready by opening day. He may take over during the season if Clemens stumbles, but this still gives Kellen a chance to take this team and this offense by the throat and make his mark as the team’s leader.

If this was a bad or transitional team, no question, Sanchez is QB from day One. But it’s not. The idea here and now is to win. This is a championship caliber team, or is built to be. Basically, whether Dirty plays or not, is more up to Clemens at this point. If his experience allows the team to win, he plays. If he falters, then you swallow the new kid’s mistakes while he’s learning and put him in.

Sanchez will own this town eventually. He may win SBs for us. Who knows? Maybe even a few of them.

But for now, September and October belong to Kellen. What he does with them will tell us where we are going and what Sanchez’ impact will be.

    mike,

Remember, Rex said he was the only coach that said that he thought Flacco should start because, in his view, Flacco had out-played the veterans. So, while you’re correct in what happened in Baltimore, it wasn’t Rex’s choice.

As an aside, I’m blown away by Sanchez’s footwork and quick release. Clemens might be more experienced, but, IMO, there’s no doubt that Sanchez has more ability.

    SD99, agreed.

Of course, none of this will be clear until about the 3rd week of Camp when people have been slamming each other in pads in 90 degree heat, 100% humidity.

Even recalling my HS football days, that is the time you begin to realize what you’ve absorbed and what you haven’t in a way you just can’t while wearing shorts. Granted, Sanchez may have more talent. But for right now, I’d prefer someone calmly knowing what to do in rotten conditions, with just enough talent to do it, rather than someone with more natural talent running for his life trying to remember what to do on the fly.

We had that talented “on the fly” thing last year — even with a load of experience — with that Packer Guy, and we see how well that turned out. He was always going one way, the system was going another; not good. I’m still convinced that Chad would have gotten this particular team into the playoffs last year. Packer Guy may have been more entertaining, but he had a very iffy Sell-by date.

    mike,

I think last year and this year are very different situations. Chad, warts and all, was still a competent and experienced QB that knew how to execute the Jets offense. KC, on the other hand, may know the offense well, but he wasn’t very good at executing it when he started in 2007 and he’s still very inexperienced. In my view, the ONLY advantage KC has over Sanchez is that he’s more experienced. But, that’s the problem with NFL experience, a player learns by doing. So, we get to my favorite line: I’d rather see Sanchez play his 1st NFL game than KC his 9th.

Also, to re-hash last season, I’m convinced that Chad playing wouldn’t have made any difference. IMO, Favre won some games that Chad would’ve lost and vice versa. Favre with his high pain threshold played despite being injured and he got injured by taking some hard hits. Because Chad isn’t a downfield threat, he would’ve taken even more punishment (fewer adverse consequences in blitzing) and, IMO, the running game would’ve suffered, too (easier to play 8 in the box if you don’t have the arm to go over the top consistently). To Miami’s credit, they placed Chad in the perfect offense for him to succeed, including taking him out at the goal line in certain instances to play the Wildcat. The Jets offense would’ve scored fewer points and had fewer INTs with Chad…I don’t think that translates into wins because Favre’s INTs only cost the Jets 1 game, the last one; and, even in that game, Favre handed the defense a 3rd quarter lead.

Forget about the Jets QB Competition. Check out SalPal’s GalPal back in the studio – Smoking Hot!!!

If Clemens starts it’s bad news. It means he actually beat out Mark in camp. If Sanchez can’t beat out the clearly mediocre Kellen, then we’ve made a horrible mistake in drafting him.

But I’ve no doubt Mark will be under center on opening day.

  9. avatar TimNC says:

StvDoe, really? If Sanchez can’t beat out Clemens in his 1st ever NFL camp, then it was a horrible mistake? So if the guy with what will be about 4 months of experience can’t beat out the guy with 4 years of it, he’s a bust? I’m gonna have to take a pass on agreeing with this one.

If Clemens starts in Houston its only to shop him around for next season. He will not be a Jet next year unless he is happy being the backup.
