New York Jets Sign Mark Sanchez, Rumored $30 Million Guaranteed

by Bassett on June 10th, 2009 at 6:00 pm

The Jets have announced the signing of Mark Sanchez, and according to Rich Cimini, the deal is rumored to be worth $30 million in guaranteed money.

As the sixth pick last year, Vernon Gholston got a five year $32.5 million total deal, with $21 million guaranteed. My guess is that it’s a five year deal for the Jets. Now with the big piece of the puzzle out of the way, the Jets can do whatever they need to with their other pieces of the puzzle, Leon, Plax, whatever.

Wow. This is a good sign. It’s impressive that Sanchez has been signed this early and not a midnight deal before camp. Both sides were clear about not drawing it out, and it’s clear that’s just what they did.

More as we know it …

I heard from ESPN 28 mill guaranteed

  2. avatar JetfaninLA says:

ESPN reporting 5 years, $28 million. I love the fact that there won’t be a contract dispute/worries.

  3. avatar Dean Barbella says:

Great work Tannenbaum! $50 Million over Five Years!!!

  4. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

great deal after we sign shonn greene we can see how much money we have left to play with.

  5. avatar jesse s says:

Goes to show you the class that sanchez has. iN TODAYS sports thats rare.

  6. avatar JetfaninLA says:

Great point HOZ. It tells us how much money we have to go after Plaxico (or another WR).

  7. avatar gsteigs says:

yes it for 5yrs. 25 mil guaranteed but i dont know how much $ a yr

  8. avatar nyckage says:

I’m so glad this got taking cared of, now I’m sure Sanchez will get his fair share of Reps in Training camp to decide the starter.

  9. avatar NYJ09 says:

HOZ and jetfan, teams get 3.4 million (in base salaries im assuming) to sign rookies so subtract that from cap and theres about 10 million left, maybe a little more

  10. avatar Michael says:

Like the fact they signed him before Stafford. This way, in case the dubious Lion front office signed him to an insane contract (well, relative for the NFL), the Jets are protected from the accompanying increase. Crazy though that the guys guaranteed money is almost as much as Gholston’s total contract only a year later.

  11. avatar JesusRevis says:

Clayton said the contract could potentially be as much as 60 mil, but more likely in the area of 50 mil. Either way, 25 mil guaranteed is very reasonable for a Qb drafted in the top 5

  12. avatar nyckage says:

Well I heard there is a press conference with Mike and Sanchez, so we will get the details later I guess.

  13. avatar Hoz The Jet says:

His salary cap hit might be a lil more than 5 mil per yr we should have enough left to sign plaxico or whoever.

  14. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

MIchael, the Lions signed Stafford before the draft.. 6 year deal, can’t remember the money..

Right now, they are the only 2 signed draft picks..

  15. avatar Hoz The Jet says:

Shonn greene contract won’t effect our cap much since he was a 3rd rd pick, I believe we will go after a #1 wr after everything is settle

  16. avatar MattNYC says:

I have an unshakable image in my head of Sanchez on the phone in a lifeguard tower negotiating his contract with Tanny… And GQ was there to catch it all

    Love it!

  18. avatar StvDoe says:

Considering the guaranteed money Matt got last year I figured that Mark would get 30 million guaranteed. (We discussed this after the draft.)

So, from my perspective, the Jets did quite well in getting this deal done VERY early, and at LESS money than I figured.

This once again shows Sanchez has a tremendous attitude. Rarely do early draft picks care more about getting to camp than going to the bank.

What we know about Mark just gets better every day.

  19. avatar Lonnie G says:

I just saw that Rex quote on Sportscenter. This guy is great!

Awesome that they signed Sanchez. Now he can focus on the work to become our franchise QB.

  20. avatar the revamped d says:

just throwing something out there and i know people have brought up this point already, but do you think they might want to get these signings done to see what they have for plax?

  21. avatar SackDance99 says:

Sanchez’s contract, actually, is pretty reasonable for a 5th round pick who is also a QB. Last year, Glenn Dorsey got a 5 year, $51 million deal with $22 million guaranteed. Sanchez’s contract, as reported on ESPN.com, is 5yr, $50M deal with $28 million in guarantees and escalators that could make the deal worth $60M.

Last year’s no. 3 pick, Matt Ryan, got a huge QB premium. His deal was 6 years, $72M with $34.75 guaranteed. The 2007 no. 3 pick, Joe Thomas, got a 5 year, $43M deal with $23M guaranteed. Ryan’s deal was approximately 50% more, while Sanchez’s deal is roughly 30% more for guaranteed money and only 20% more in potential total value, with Dorsey’s deal actually $1 million more in “real” value.

These numbers are, of course, obscene. However, Sanchez’s QB premium was not as out-sized as Ryan’s. Now, we know he’ll be in training camp and ready to compete for the QB1 job on day 1. That’s great news for the Jets.

Bent, what’s your views on the contract?

  22. avatar James in TN says:

Rex Ryan is such a breath of fresh air. Also who is this Carol Channing wasn’t he on hollywood squares or something. He looks like a wannabe and sounds like a neverwas.

  23. avatar Brad says:

Those who asked about Matthew Stafford’s contract:
6 years $72 mil. with $41.7 mil. guaranteed!

This deal by Sanchez is looking very reasonable! cant wait to see the details!

  24. avatar simplysimon2 says:

    Phwehhhh!!!!

  25. avatar DKnyj says:

Good job getting this done – this quote from Sanchez pretty much says it all in terms of a kid that “Gets it”…

In response to a question asked about whether he agrees with Rex Ryan’s Goal of winning a super bowl, he said “yes I agree, but it’s not my job to saying anything i haven’t done anything yet.”

Great Deal by both parties! Everyone has to understand that Mark will make up the $$ difference on Madison Avenue.

He’s no dumbing … The kid is a Marketing Whiz. He’s playing smart ball on and off the field !!

Now just throw TDs and stay away trouble from the Lime Light of NYC and we’ll all be happy.

  28. avatar Dean Barbella says:

    James in TN,

I loved your “Carol Channing” moniker. I think it’s gonna stick like Paul Lynde on Ryan Seacrest’s star!

… or is it Ryan Seacrest marks Adam Lambert’s spot?

Regardless, there’s no doubt Channing’s a dead ringer for Whoopi Goldberg.

Sexy Rexy & His Baltimore Ex’s are gonna Daily Double his sorry A$$.

  29. avatar NYJ09 says:

nvm about the 3.4 thing, his average per year could go thru the roof especially if he starts.. cimini says 9 mil per yr plus more with incentives.. thats alot, but this isnt good for leon, no way he gets his 6 mil/yr now if they’re gonna go for burress, which they probably

  30. avatar kennydajet says:

Great job getting Sanchez signed so early at a reasonable price. Now lets take care of LEON!!!! Not 1 cent to Plax until Leon gets his.

  31. avatar SackDance99 says:

Crowder is a mediocre LB who wouldn’t start on the Jets and hasn’t even sniffed the Pro Bowl. Only 1.5 sacks in 50 game starts at LB is pathetic. Plus, he’s never played a full season because he’s not durable. I can’t believe such a mediocrity has the stones to criticize Ryan, who was the defensive coordinator of a great defense and won the coordinator of the year award. Crowder’s done nothing in the NFL besides run his mouth. Plus, his real name, Randolph Channing Crowder, sounds more like a Broadway choreographer than a football player. Maybe he should quit football and train for “So You Think You Can Dance” because the football thing isn’t really panning out.

  32. avatar NYJ09 says:

    how much would plax cost

  33. avatar SackDance99 says:

    JRevis,

Your post got the guaranteed money wrong and didn’t compare Sanchez’s salary to anyone else’s. I have no idea why you’re dogging me, but I didn’t even read your post before I posted mine because it took me some time to find out the salary information. If we agree, cool. But, you don’t have to be a jerk.

  34. avatar Dean Barbella says:

    SackDance99,

True that. While Randolph Channing Crowder has yet to win any choreography awards, his namesake, Carol Channing, has three Tony Awards!

Maybe he should audition for So-You-Think-Can-Play?

  35. avatar R in CT says:

You know, I wasn’t on board with the Sanchez move originally, but I have to say that the kid is winning me over with his attitude — his eagerness to sign early and compete on the field is a good sign.

I also like that they have this done early, which means they’re focused on getting their ducks in a row. Expect Greene soon, then hopefully Leon …

  36. avatar JesusRevis says:

I typed 25 mil by accident (as a reference you can check my earlier posts on the previous thread about the wildcat formation, where I did report 5 years 28 mil). I also posted the same info as you as far as the 60 mil potential and how the deal was very reasonable. I didn’t bother comparing the salaries because i’m sure everyone here has already seen the comparisons of contracts between Sanchez and the likes of Vince Young, Jamarcus Russel, Matt Ryan, and Matthew Stafford. No ones being a jerk.

  38. avatar SackDance99 says:

    JRevis,

Whatever. My post was really about the fact that Sanchez didn’t get a big “QB premium.” I didn’t compare his salary to Ryan’s, just the premium. You just said his contract was reasonable for a QB taken in the top 5 , without putting your conclusion in any context. The last QB taken with the 5th pick was Kerry Collins in 1995. The guys you just cited were all top 3, so Sanchez’s contract should be more reasonable than theirs. Point is, you called me out for no reason and my post was nothing like yours.

  39. avatar JesusRevis says:

    SackDance,

You love to argue, and you have this chip on your shoulder as if you are right 100% of the time.

I used those other QB’s because they are the only references with any meaning; all QB’s drafted in the top 5 since 2005 (Clayton used the same comparison during Sports Center). Kerry Collins is a meaningless comparison because he was drafted over 10 years ago, when salaries were extremely different. I did say his contract is reasonable for a QB taken in the top 5, which is true. Your next post said “Sanchez contract is actually pretty reasonable for a 5th round pick who is also a QB. Very similar statements, don’t see how your disputing what I said. Point is you always call me out for no reason, and here you decided to post a comment that was very similar to mine, which I found funny and decided to point it out. Don’ be so sensitive.

….. Oh yeah, and your post was wrong because you said Sanchez was a 5th round pick, he was actually a first round pick, how did you not know that?

  40. avatar Heckynaw says:

Very, very excellent. This also speaks volumes of Mark Sanchez character. I can’t stress that enough, about wanting to be a team leader, wanting to learn the playbook and wanting be in training camp and becoming our starting QB.

All the pieces of the puzzle seem to be falling into place nicely. Now Leon should get his money, Plax, if he can get his act together, should soon follow and this should turn out to be a better year than we’re all expecting. I can’t wait for some preseason football!!!

  41. avatar Zartan says:

why cant i find a thread on the 3:34 practice if it was open to the public.

  42. avatar Bent says:

Sack – since you asked, here’s my view(s), although please note that I am drunk right now (quite rare for me).

    1. I can’t believe they signed him so early. That’s a definite plus, even if they paid over the odds, which maybe they didn’t…
    2. My spur-of-the-moment draft day prediction was 6 years, 67m and 24.5m guaranteed, but I was expecting a higher amount guaranteed because in conversations I had recently with Jason from nyjetscap.com he was predicting 28m (kudos!) due to the fact that it is not as easy to incentivize this year because of the different rules thanks to the CBA expiring. I thought the concession would be in terms of length and non-guaranteed amount, but I guess it came in the form of guarantees.
    3. Based on the above, I am stunned that it was “only” 5/50 (if that’s accurate) and that almost makes up for the fact that they gave up a higher than usual amount of guaranteed money.
4, Without seeing how the guaranteed money was divided up it is not possible to say, but due to the limit enforced by the rookie cap, I would assume there is big bonus due in 2010, which means that in the unlikely event that Clemens starts and excels, trading Sanchez might be feasibly possible. As I say, I can’t comment without full disclosure, but that seems likely and is a good thing, if only for the fact that it provides added motivation for the youngster.
    5. I am blown away that they got this done so early. Really good news. I may not be as high on Sanchez as some of you, but being guaranteed to have him throuhgout camp is huge.
    6. Dean – I prefer the Stockard Channing moniker.
    7. Remaining cap and the ability to sign Plaxico or anyone else: this has absolutely NO effect! The rookie cap was decided weeks ago and the Jets were limited to that amount to sign their rooks and any balance cannot be used on veterans…similarly money earmarked for veterans cannot be used to ameliorate the rookie cap. They were always going to have about $10m left having signed their rookies.
    8. The $10m left after signing their rookies is not all available to go on a spending spree. They need at least half of that money to hold back so that any incentives earned during the year do not put the Jets over the cap. IIRC Gholston alone has $3.6m alone and although you might see it as unlikely that he reaches any incentive, with the penalties (mutliple first rounders) for exceeding the cap, you just can’t take that risk.
    9. It would seem the Jets are now committing a lot of money to 2010. Although they have some wiggle room (Woody, Pouha, Thomas, Ellis and Jones could be cut and Scott/Sheppard could be restructured – if Shep even makes it to 2010), I don’t know whether going after a Braylon, Anquan or Ocho is feasible now. Even Plax would probably only be a one year deal because you know he’d want to restructure after a successful 2009 campaign.
    10. If you liked this post then perhaps I should do all my posts whilst drunk. If not, I apologize…

  43. Sounds like the rest of the top ten is not going to be very happy…..

This is great news for us though!!

  44. avatar bozzie says:

    Bent,

Have another bud nip…I loved it! LOL

  45. avatar Bent says:

Drew- I don’t think it will affect the top ten. Last year, Matt Ryan earned way more than the guys drafted just ahead and just after him. It was almost as if the normal rules didn’t apply because he was a QB. The rest of the top ten will align themselves accordingly and Sanchez’s deal will be an outlier/aberration.

Expect the sixth pick to get similar to Gholston (note: what Bassett’s numbers above don’t mention is that his deal could potentially rise to $50m – although he’s already whiffed on over $3m of that amount).

  46. avatar BigKatFan says:

Oh, great! Now we have to cut five players in order to re-sign Jones and Washington.

  47. avatar Green Lantern #80 says:

One Question You Guys Why Didn’t We Get Terrell Owens?

  48. avatar Dean Barbella says:

    BigKatFan,

We don’t need to re-sign Jones. We overpaid him when he underplayed. To be fair, it wasn’t his faulf, because we hand no offensive line.

Case in point, we had let go disgruntled Pete Kendall. I’m tired of Jets players (including Chris Baker) crying about their contracts.

They signed them. Now shut up and play!!!

We need the dough-ray- me to sign Leon and PLAX® – Now, with now with Retsin!!!

  49. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

Does anyone know how much money we are aloud to spend this year? Whats left in the bank account?

  50. avatar Dean Barbella says:

    Jets-Fan-4-Life,

Don’t know Tannenbaum’s got left in the kitty (against the cap), but Woody’s the heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune, so he’s got money to burn.

Woody, if you’re reading this, please buy the NY Mets and Everton Football Club. All the rich guys are doing it… Patriots Robert Kraft bought New England Revolution… Bucs Malcolm Glazer bought Manchester United. Liverpool is US owned and operated too.

Do it Woody! Just do it!

  51. avatar Bent says:

BKF – I think you were maybe joking, but basically this deal has no effect whatsoever on the Jets being able to pay more to Leon or TJ (see point 7 from my long post above).

Green Lantern/JF4L – See point 8 from my long post above. The Jets have about $5m of available cap room (note they couldn’t have afforded T.O. – as I said at the time – who signed for $6.5m), but Jason from nyjetscap.com believes that the Jets might use this to advance money to existing players (possibly including but not necessarily TJ and/or Leon) to reduce the 2010 cap burden in the expectation of there being a cap next year.

  55. avatar Dean Barbella says:

  56. avatar JetOrange says:

    Bent

Thanks for your post, your dedication is only exceeded by your expertise… Is there any other player other than Gholston, that has significant achievable incentives ?
My concern is Keller, a first rounder, indications are the Jets will be running there passing attack through Dustin..

  57. avatar Bent says:

JO – apparently not. Where I say they need half of that $10m, that’s because there are roughly $5m such incentives overall, according to a conversation I had with Jason. Gholston’s is by far the biggest. Obviously a higher-than-usual-incentivized deal looks like it was a smart way to go with VG.

Note: Jason also said that he expects the actual Sanchez deal has an option for a sixth year, which he thinks the Jets will exercise at the end of the 2009 season.
