Buzz: Jets Interest Cooling on Plex?

Is the Jets interest in Plaxico Burress cooling off? Hey wait a minute, was it ever hot to begin with?

The Jets, once considered a potential suitor for the talented, but troubled Plaxico Burress, no longer are as interested as they once were, according to an NFL source.

Could this be posturing? Perhaps. From what I hear, their interest in Burress isn’t completely dead. “Cooled” is the word I’ve heard. As long as there’s a pulse anything can happen, but right now the Jets apparently have put it on the backburner.

A few cursory phonecalls doth not a serious contender make. It’s something I was never really convinced the Jets were hot and heavy on. Remember, when the story broke about the Jets’ interest, it was theoretically floated by at least one Jets beat writer that it might have been a retalitory salvo on Rosenhaus’ part in the Thomas Jones fusilade after the Jets drafting of Shonn Greene, and it essentially rained on the Mark Sanchez parade as well.

Plex is a tantalizing option to any team looking to get over the hump and into the playoffs, but his off the field antics are the stuff of legend.

In parallel, I think the Jets are seeing some of their receivers starting to show their worth, but the truth is that they are going to keep looking to see who they can add before the season starts.

  1. I didn’t jump up and down and root for the Jets to trade for Boldin. I certainly didn’t see Plaxico as seriously coming to the team, at any point. I will now say though, I would trade a first rounder for Brandon Marshall in Denver. That guy is a freak, who is not only younger than both of these guys, but seemingly more available according to reports that he asked to be traded (and we know how Denver handles those requests from star players)

  2. I AGREE WITH CHAOS LET TRADE FOR BRANDON MARSHALL HE IS A BEAST!!!! WOULD BE A HUGH UPGRADE AT WR!!!!

  3. I was just going to post that we should trade for Marshall- he’s younger and while he’s had some off field stuff he isn’t a locker room headache like Plax. I wouldn’t give up a first rounder for him but if they can get him at a good price I’d go for it…

  4. Heard on the radio Plax was 20 minutes late for his felony hearing. Claims he was stuck in traffic. Don’t want this mutt on my team.

  5. why do you think marshall is on the block. no one will trade him, stop living in a dream world
i dont care about off field b.s. all i care about is having a wr that can dominate and we all know plax’s can do that

  6. It’s odd that another star player on Denver requests to be traded.

  7. Listen… How about the Jets let the receivers stay as is. Let the young talent emerge. There is no point in throwing away draft picks when the franchise will have a bright future. Plus every receiver named in this blog has problems with their franchises. Change of scenery doesn’t always work out. The only reason I would agree with grabbing Plax, Boldin or Marshall is because each one would make Mark Sanchez a much better QB. Given that, this team is a run first offense. Games this season should be low scoring close affairs. Cotchery should do a good job and with the targets the Jets have now, it will only give Keller more oppurtunities to succeed. Stuckey could emerge and the other receivers could become reliable targets. Lets accept that this season should be a year to build on. I badly want a Jets Super Bowl, but winning a SB this season is not very realistic at this time. Lets build on the talent the Jets already have and use the draft picks to build for the FUTURE like the best franchises in the NFL do every year i.e. Pats, Steelers, Colts…

  8. Im In For Brandon Marshall all he wants is a raise of his 2 million a year also how about 1st rounder and TJ for Marshall and sign a vet to take some carries.

  9. That is what the Dallas Cowboys or Raiders or Jets would do, and that would be the worst thing for a franchise!!! The franchises that win do not make crazy aquisitions!!! The biggest aquisition by any Super Bowl Winning team since 2000 was Adam Vinatieri to the Colts! Is that enough of a reason to stay put and let the future take its course…

  10. Eric… you’re wrong. . . -& on so many levels that I can barely even begin to get into it.

For starters, your Adam Vinatieri being the biggest acquisition of any SB winner since 2000 statement — is not only generally ridiculous, but in this context, is akin to pissing directly into the wind, regarding. . . So glaringly, and off the top, since, well, since, ya know being he’s only the topic at hand and all, but nevermind that for a sec — 1 simple question regarding ur “crazy acquisitions!!!” assertion —

—Did the Jints acquire Plaxico ?

  11. story that jets have cooled on plax = jets are hot for plax

  12. Eric… you’re wrong. . . on so many levels there I’m not even gonna get into it… but I agree with what you posted earlier regarding our own playmakers. . . Difference is I see Plax as a big-time difference maker who would take the offense to another level – opening up the field that much more.

Would strongly welcome his addition. -would love it.

But as for statements like Adam Vinatieri being the biggest acquisition of any SB winner since 2000, etc. etc. — is not only generally ridiculous, but in this context, is akin to pissing directly into the wind, regarding. . . So glaringly, and off the top, since, well, since, ya know being he’s only the topic at hand and all, but nevermind that for a sec — 1 simple question regarding ur “crazy acquisitions!!!” assertion —

—Did the Jints acquire Plaxico ?

  13. Whoa… Mike… I am talking about in the season a team won their super bowl. you misread me. Plax was acquired years before the G Men Won in 2007… And if you get your facts straight you will acknowledge that I am correct with the statements i have made. The simple fact is that this year is a building year for the Jets… Sanchez needs to get some serious playing time and Rex Ryan needs to prove his worth… And as far as pissing in the wind, quite frankly us Jets fans and this NY Jets Franchise has been pissing in some hurricane force winds for the last 40 Seasons… We hopefully will only be pissing in the wind for a few more years… But the fact is, this is a building year & PLAX is not close to the solution for the N.Y. JETS!!!

  14. Any Fan that wants Plaxico Burress is definitely a desperate fan. This league is a build in-house league where successful franchises are made via the DRAFT!!! There is no argument! Simply if the Jets are going to be successful in the future, we know Plax will not be a part of it… He will get to possible play this year and that is probably it..

  15. Brandon Marshall please…. even though he is kind of a yogurt head… better than plax though!

  16. I still want Braylon Edwards. Isn’t Mangini ready to trade him for T. Jones yet?

  17. GET BRANDON MARSHALL!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Never happen… Edwards is too valuable to Cleveland. Plus, the N.Y. Jets will not trade T.J. this season… & Marshall, he is a disease to any franchise he plays for… He has been arrested multiple times & he has not learned his lesson yet!
Marshall is probably better than Plax right now, plus he has many more years ahead of him if he can stay clean…

  19. For Madden, Marshall would be great. In reality, this is not a good move for the JETS!!! 1st, this is not a win now franchise! 2nd, the draft picks will be too valuable for a criminal! 3rd, you will invest too much money into a player who has a good chance of being banned for games every year!
Is this the player you want to ride your season on? Hope not!

  20. Right now…
If the Jets were to sign Plaxico or trade for Marshall, i hope they would take Plax, because they wouldnt lose draft picks and it would only be a 1 year contract!

  21. Oh and Eric was Randy Moss acquired the year the Pats went 16-0 and lost to the Giants, I know they didnt win but they were one of the greatest teams ever as much as I hate to say it

  22. Agree! But stats are stats & it doesnt matter what you accomplish unless you win the SUPER BOWL! Comeon, the argument i was getting at is that No matter who the Jets bring in at WR, it probably will not benefit them in the long run… (with the given receivers at hand)

  23. Eric, you said any fan that wants plax is a desperate fan. I say whoever isnt desperate is not really a fan. We havent won the superbowl in 40 years. Wanting the best players for your team isnt desperate its just being a fan. Signing plaxico would turn our weakest position into one of our strongest.

  24. I agree. Signing Plax is a desperate move tho. I believe the Jets have their best chances at success with Burress on the roster, but i’m sorry, I am a season ticket holder to the N.Y. Jets & quite frankly, this team is not ready to take down Pittsburgh or New England unless they have literally the greatest Defense ever. Let’s say this year is for building on the future. If so, the team will be better off without Burress. If we want to win now as usual, then sign Plax, but at seasons end if there is not a Super Bowl Ring on Tannenbaum’s hand, he will have sold out & hired a delinquent to his team, and will be blamed for bringing in unneeded stress to the locker room because the top offensive weapon has a felony charge… This is a media frenzy & will be bad for the Jets franchise…

  25. & when it comes to desperate & fans. Fans are called fans because a fan is a FANATIC… I am not a fanatic. I am an enthusiast… I am as diehard a Jets Fan as they come if not more diehard. I can back up my love for the Jets all day, but that is not the issue. The issue is the Jets need the best players available to win. The steelers won last year with a terrible o line… Who says the Jets can’t win with the receivers they have now. It would be great if Plaxico was an angel from heaven who never did a thing wrong and came to new york and brought a SB… But thats not going to happen… He is a great athlete… GREAT…. but he is an idiot, and he cost the Giants their SB chances last year… Do we want that… Come on, this team is talented as is. If Burress is free to play this year, then sign him, but if the Jets dont win, it will be a severe waste unless he transforms Sanchez to Matt Ryan status! Fact

  26. I mean almost only counts in horseshoes but it does judge talent and we almost beat that 16-0 Pats team with horrible coaching, Justin Mcstonehands, chad pennington no running game, no o-line and only one good CB.
We are the most underrated team in the NFL

  27. of course we’re desperate.

this is a blog for JETS fans.

  28. ANYONE who thinks that we should pass on BURRESS because of his “issues” and then WANNA get BRANDON MARSHALL!!?? He is one of if not the BIGGEST problem childs of the N.F.L.!

  29. ps. why would BRETT FAVRE go on tv JUST to tell us everything we KNEW already!??….what an EGOMANIAC!

  30. Although the league decided Marshall won’t face a suspension over his arrest in AtlantaTHIS spring for fighting with his new fiancee, Marshall faces a trial later this summer on TWO misdemeanor battery charges stemming from an altercation with his former girlfriend.

The outcome of that case could subject Marshall to punishment from the NFL even though it was part of what triggered his summons to commissioner Roger Goodell’s office last summer, when Marshall was suspended for the season opener and fined two paychecks after a SERIES of police-related incidents involving his former girlfriend.

  31. Bassett.

Are you kidding me? I know it’s slow news day, but c”mon?! Jets, not only want Plax… we need him. And best of all, he needs us.

So, stop messin’ with my emotion of devotion already and cook me up some good stuff – Damn it!

Not Kool. D-E-F-I-N-I-T-E-L-Y Not Kool, Dude!

    Dean

  32. ok we get it kc but come on we need a talented receiver that will keep defenses honest.

  33. It’s a feedin” frenzy… Bob Glauber, Newsday writes:

“Don’t think so. Besides, there were indications yesterday that the Jets have cooled somewhat on any interest in Burress, especially after a promising showing by their receivers in the recent minicamp.”

I say, WTF!!! Nobody has impressed. Can’t tell one from another.

Maybe, when they’re wearing pads. Clowney won’t have a broken clavicle and actually get to test his speed againts real starters in the real season.

Maybe, Stuckey won’t get hurt in the slot and he can pretend to be Wayne Chrebet coming over the middle?

Maybe Brad Smith and the Wildcat will go away for good, because they are not an NFL caliber QB, WR or credible playcall. Brad can’t get open. Nuff Said!

Henry’s the biggest target noone can find. They all suck, until they proove me wrong. Until they do, I prefer a talented wide receiver who shoots himself in the leg to a DUMB A$$ journalist who shoots the Jets in the foot.

Read the article. This guy is a JACK A$$! We need Plax. We have too many vets to concide rebuilding! Win now!!!

  34. hey greenlantern,I TOTALLY agree about needing a TALL,FAST WR w/HANDS(ive been saying that a long time now) MY whole point was people saying BURRESS is trouble and then wanting Brandon Marshall!!??….made me laugh.

  35. Leaving aside the fact that he has a reputation and assuming Marshall is perhaps only one notch below the top tier of established receivers, the question has to be asked is (you guessed it) “can they afford him?”

I note that Green Lantern 80 said this above – “all he wants is a raise of his 2 million a year”. If that’s true, then he would be excellent value. He’s only earning $2.5m this year, so any team would have to consider getting him for less than $5m a year.

However, I suspect this is not the case. Most of the Braylon/Ocho/Boldin group will be seeking $8m-10m and I can’t see Marshall accepting anything less than $6m-$7m and even that might be unlikely. Other than Andre Johnson ($7.5m per) all of the WRs he sees himself as on a par with earn considerably more than that and even Coles got $7m a year, although I doubt he’ll see all of it.

Marshall is in the same boat as Leon…if there is no cap next year, the Broncos will retain his rights as a restricted free agent, so he not only wants more money in 2009, but will also want a long term deal so that he is not left earning less than he desires in 2010 as well.

As the cost approaches the $10m mark, the Jets hopes of being able to comfortably afford him are waning…not in terms of 2009, but it terms of 2010, where Sanchez is likely to have an enormous cap number (unless he misses all his incentives), Scott and Sheppard are due $10m bonuses each and Pace and Rhodes have higher than originally planned cap numbers because their deals were already restructured.

The Jets do have a lot of flexibility in 2010, as I can count five guys they might look to replace and save $15m-$20m (and there may not even be a cap of course). However, if there is a cap, a big money investment in a WR might mean sacrifices have to be made elsewhere, especially with guys like Leon and Mangold due to be extended.

  36. i like the plax deal, because we need a receiver this year .. from what im hearing is no one is stepping up at WR….one year deal and then address it next year Via draft of free agency…but for a one year fix to get Sanchez some confidence and or momentum going into next season…..i like it

  37. what leads everybody to believe plaxico is a locker room headache.. if guys on the jets have put their hands up and said lets get him, and his teammates on the giants supported him until the end, he obviously isn’t a locker room headache or chemistry issue.. but they shouldn’t go for him b/c if he does develop something with sanchez its only going to be for a year cause this time next year he”ll be in jail. brandon marshall is a great player and he does have a history off the field, much more than burress, but guys like him and on the field he’s fine.. he’s emerging as the next superstar in this league.. try trading for marshall, but not a first.. trade bryan thomas, brad smith, 3rd..

  38. Hate to burst some of your bubbles, but Brandon Marshall won’t be traded for less than a # 1 pick.

Plaxico Burress makes a lot more sense for the Jets w/o having to trade the farm.

  39. eric, its your thought process that is wrong on so many levels

  40. I think the team has to give the first chance to the players it drafts. Chansi Stuckie had 32 catches, 300 yards and 3 td’s in his first season. Brad Smith is going to make strides in what will be his 3rd full season of actual playing time at WR. David Clowney will be explosive, but he needs the opportunity. The spot vacated by Lavernues Coles should just go to Marcus Henry, and the other receivers should be pushed up the depth chart. Why trade draft picks before you even give 3 guys the chance to see what they can do come August even?

  41. Hey bent, can I get a list of those 5 guys you consider they can dump for the money next year?

  42. Ugh, look at the choices:

Plax- Deadbeat teammate, late for his own court appearance where HE WAS GETTING AN ADJOURNMENT!!! shoots himself in the ass, moaps around training camps.

Marshall- Beats girlfriends on a consistent basis, cuts his hands (his $ makers!) fooling around, and instigated fights at clubs (PERFECT for NYC. He’d get his ass shot on the L.E.S. maybe by Plax?)

Braylon Edwards/Anq Boldin- would take a HUGE trade where we give up good player/picks for guys who have drops(Edwards) or hip issues (Boldin)

So why not Matt Jones? hes cheap, and got caught doing something stupid but WAY less stupid than Plax or Marshall because he was snorting the coke into HIS OWN NOSE and not beating someone else or risking others’ lives by carrying a loaded weapon into a public place.

  43. Vinnie wtb and others,

In addition to the players noted above, there are the players that none of us know who will be available later this summer.

Each year, a team gets an injury at one position and trades from strength to fix it. We could trade a Leon or TJ and get a WR in a similar contract situation, a deal benefitting both teams.

Each year a team finds cheaper younger players who perform as well or better as expensive aging vets who they let go.

Settling now will preclude our having the roster spot and cash to benefit from the marketplace.

Since we are unlikely to win it all this year anyway, I say, rather than tying up millions, a roster spot and the players we trade in any of these guys, we hold onto our hand and see what cards hit the table.

    harlan

  44. Don’t forget the other option – do nothing.

JAGG – Here’s the list (and I am not saying they should replace all five, just that they have some flexibility to do so – or restructure – in 12 months time).

    Thomas Jones (cap savings $5.9m)
    Damien Woody (cap savings $4.1m)
    Bryan Thomas (cap savings $2.8m)
    Shaun Ellis (cap savings $3.6m)
    Sione Pouha (cap savings $1.1m)
    Total potential savings – $17.5m

Strickland is another guy that they could save over a million on if he doesn’t work out and they could abort the Lito deal before his roster bonus becomes due next year to save a huge chunk.

  45. Thanks I just wanted to play GM. I had some of the same people on my list. I didn’t know Woody’s contract details. At least 4 of the 7 people you mentioned wont be on the team next year in my opinion.

  46. I generally agree with the idea that it’s best to build for the future through the draft, but WR and QB are positions where, if you can get a legitimate NFL starter, you do it. Good prospects at QB and WR are usually 1st rounders and usually fail. That’s a double waste of a high pick and money. Free agent money to acquire a WR usually isn’t that much more (and is often much less) than what it would take to sign a vet. Plus, there are plenty of teams that improved themselves through acquiring veteran WRs or pass-catching TEs within 2 years or sooner, like the Pats, Eagles (never would’ve made the SB w/out TO), Bucs (vets McCardell and Johnson were the starters on the SB winner), Ravens (Q. Ismail and Shannon Sharpe, who was a TE in name only and who was acquired their SB winning year). For other examples, Chris Chambers has helped the Chargers raise their passing game to a whole new level. The reason the Pats WR corps is all vets/FA signings is because getting a vet takes a lot of guesswork out of the equation.

As for FA signings and Super Bowls, I’m guessing that the comments were limited to WR because the Steelers signed Justin Hartwig last season to be the center and anchor of thier OL, which still wasn’t all that good, but would’ve been much worse without Hartwig and, for that matter, Mewelde Moore ended up being very important and he, too, was signed before last season.

  47. I agree that we can wait until some cuts are made in various camps, but why take a chance that NO ONE GOOD will be cut? plus, if we can get a WR into camp, we can start building chemistry between the WR and new QB be it either Clemens or Sanchez

  48. Let’s face it, as good as Plax is – at best, you’re renting him for one year. And he’s a tough guy to root for – hell, he was late for his court appearance this week. He ain’t changin’.

  49. I have gone back and forth on this. On one hand, I hate players that don’t practice with the rest of the team and I hate players that end up on the front pages of newspapers, rather than the back pages. On the other hand, I have watched Plax for years and he is a major force on the football field. Eli Manning is a completely different QB, without Plax. The Giants are a different team, without him. If we could get him for a reasonable price, I would jump all over it. He immediately gives our QB’s a serious target. He instantly takes our WR group from questionable to formidable.

As for the idea that, if he comes to the Jets, he will be getting even with the Giants — that is garbage. He was playing in NY. Now, he could continue playing in NY without changing his life around. Obviously, it makes some sense for him. I don’t feel that he is a thug or a criminal. Does he make some bad decisions — you bet but, everybody deserves a second chance. Tanny, sign this guy, before he goes to Miami. He would look great in kelly green. Just like the jolly green ex–Giant.
