Link: Woody Gets “Pwnd” by Peter King

Brett Favre’s biggest fan and SI columnist Peter King has acquired a reputation for posting factoids that “may only interest” him and being a shameless shill for NFL players, officials and staff members alike. However, his MMQB column this week contains the following quote from Jets owner Woody Johnson about Mark Sanchez…

When we were looking at taking Mark, I studied all the great generals to see what those men were like early in their careers, see how they reacted. It’s all about how they reacted in battle, what happened when the action was really live. You see that in Mark, his calm.

…to which King’s reaction was this…

I realize you get excited about your players, particularly about the man you believe is the next long-term quarterback in franchise history, but that is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard an owner say.

He then goes on to list many Quarterbacks with the same quality, none of whom played well enough in the NFL to merit a $50m contract and says that the expectations being placed on him are too high. You have to admit he’s got a point (with regard to the quote, not necessarily Sanchez’ outlook), but why such an extreme reaction? Perhaps someone has not been responding to PK’s tweets. What do you all “think you think”?

I had to post this, if just to dispel the notion we won’t allow any anti-Woody comments to be heard…

  1. that was excessively harsh by pk and begs the question of whether this is about something else.

people say much dumber stuff every day — and that was not a particularly silly statement at all.

stuff like this (and florio’s vendetta against all things nyj) makes me appreciate schefter’s skills all the more.

  2. p.s. amusing irony, though: calm amidst adversity wasn’t perceived a virtue when it came to mangini.

  3. I can’t stand PK. That harsh reaction is uncalled for.

You could just as easily play the same game with what he said.

PK: “In fact, if a quarterback WASN’T a strong leader with a good presence about him, he shouldn’t have been picked high in the first round.”

Vince Young? JaMarcus Russell? Alex Smith? To name just a few within the last 3 or 4 years.

  4. By the way, I had a little Twitter spat with PK last week that I thought you might enjoy:

PK: MMQB was 6,774 words today, 324 about Favre. So 4.8 percent of column was Favre-related. That’s too much?

Me replying to PK: Yes. Yes it is.

PK: Then skip it. That’s not hard. Used to say the same to people who hated reading about Montclair softball. You have a cursor.

Me: I do. My pt is everything else you write is interesting to 90% of your readers, while Favre speculation is pointless to >50%.

  5. well done, lb. 4 lb.
i’m certain most media has little grasp of the concept of “favre fatigue” that has been mounting for well over a year.

we are way past the point of overkill and to think you can rehash every day and week and month is basically insulting to informed fans who seek out “news” and hope/expect it contains something “new.”

  6. More mindless NYJ “hating” by the court jester of mainstream media. Nothing less.

  7. I don’t think Woody’s quote is that bad, if you read him to be talking about the importance of staying calm during stressful situations. I don’t think Woody was saying Sanchez was on par with Patton and should be a company commander in Afghanistan.

I remember Malcolm Gladwell, the Blink guy, saying that he bet Joe Montana’s heartrate probably never got over 100 during one of his 4th quarter comebacks. Some people are unflappable and that’s not an unreasonable thing to be looking for in an NFL quarterback.

  8. This is coming from the man who spends half his time talking about what coffee you should drink if you are ever near Lucas Oil Stadium in Indy. I loathe Peter King. He is a moron. He is even worse than Michael Silver.

  9. One of the things I think I think is that PK is a joke — think about this: For the man who is supposed to be such a big friend and supporter of Favre, Jay Glazer is the one who broke the Favre to the Jets story.

And remember, PK’s job is supposed to include stirring up things — to be a troll, as it were, to make people mad. Saying Woody is dumb is his way of riling up Jets fans and drive more traffic to his column during a down time of the year.

  10. Doctor K, et. al.

If we want folks to stop hating on us, all we have to do is win consecutive SBs.

[Only one will be considered a fluke].

  11. is not a bad quote for Sanchez, but rather it assumes that leadership as a young QB is a recipe for success, as PK tries to point out is not.

Chase…was vince young and russell and smith all reportedly great leaders in college…(seriously, I dont know)

    lb 4 lb…awesome exchange.

  12. Must be the middle of June in the NFL…. Would any of you have a reaction to what King wrote if it was quoting an owner of another team about his QB? Any reaction at all seems just a little silly to me.

  13. he’s the larry king (norm macdonald version) of football journalists.

  14. you have take anything King says about the Jets with a grain of salt…the guy foams about his Pats and Red Sox in every column.

I usually enjoy his columns when they dont involve favre or brady…as he does have some good connections within the league (as he will always make note of) that does create some good insight.

  15. Peter King is probably a middle-class guy who has become a highly-paid and respected NFL sportswriter. Woody Johnson is the billionaire scion of one of America’s great family fortunes. Who here doesn’t think that PK gets a little jolt sticking it to a guy who could buy Time Inc. and fire his ass? Sure, Woody doesn’t have the breadth of NFL experience to draw the conclusion that collegiate leadership skills, on their own, are not a great predictor of NFL success. Score one for the working class hero, he made the billionaire look dumb. I’ll go to Stabucks have some my own “Coffee Nerdness” (or whatever the frack he calls it) and in an hour or so, I’ll build him a monument.

  16. I agree with Harlan. The only way to shut up idiots like this is to win the SB.

As for Woody, I think he has been steadily improving as an owner over the last three seasons, and we should rally around him.

Woody has done everything possible (good or bad – financially) to bring in championship and pro-bowl caliber players to help this team win, and win now!

Not to mention fire Eric who sucked as a coach and also let Favre and Jenkins continue playing while being injured, to bring in Rex Ryan to jump start and motivate this franchise and fan base.

So I say ….. SCREW YOU ERIC MANGINI and SCREW YOU TO PETER KING! You bunch of A**HOLES!!!!!

  17. I dont see why that’s such a dumb comment. I mean, a lot of people said that Sanchez will be better than Stafford not because of arm talent but because of poise (another football term for calm).

  18. Jets-Fan-4-Life – Mike Holmgren let Favre play hurt too. As did every coach he ever had. You can’t bench a legend.

  19. Jets just announced the signing of Shonn Greene.

Can Leon’s deal be far behind or will it get held up by the Burress situation?

  20. Thanks for the news SEC

  21. I emailed PK and told him that while he points out that great leaders do not necessarily make great QBs, great QBs must be great leaders- maybe he’ll publish this in MMQB Tuesday

  22. JAGG…lol…Maybe if coaches broke that 269 game start streak, Favre wouldnt be 12-10 in the postseason with over 28 INTs

  23. So, hang on. Woody Johnson owns the Jets, Peter King owns Woody Johnson and Pound4pound owns Peter King.

Wow…Pound4Pound, you effectively own the Jets! Or at least pwn them.

  24. Starz31- Believe me I’m not a big Favre fan and think that all that is left of him is hype, but I know being responsible for ending that streak will be mentioned in sports until I die.

  25. while googling for Favre stats, I found this gem of an article from last year…its from Sal Pal… and is very telling of Favre and the media and is still very much relevant.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=paolantonio_sal&id=3281535

  26. There was a good article about how he collapses the second half of every season on espn as well. 12 of his 22TDs last year were by week 5. Damn you Brett!!!!

  27. >> Wow…Pound4Pound, you effectively own the Jets! Or at least pwn them.

In that case, you’ll have to excuse me, I have to go “judge” the Flight Crew tryouts!

  28. yea, and 6 of those 12 TDs came in week 4…

  29. Don’t remind me. That was an anomaly of fantasy football, time and space.

  30. I think if your investing 50 million in an asset, you need to have a point of view and decide what values are important. I think Woody relies on his football guys, but I think if your an owner you need to give a certain level of input. Football is a business, its a people business, IMO Woody’s input is valid.

  31. I read the quote from Woody a couple of days ago and thought “that makes sense”. Poise under pressure is one of the qualities all great QBs have. Peter seems to assume that it’s the ONLY reason Woody liked him, and that’s just silly.

I enjoy reading PK, and sometimes think he shows great insight. Other times he just looks the fool.

    I’ll consider this the latter.

  32. Peter King for all the access he has to players, coaches and the commish he can be a TOOL.I know leadership thanks to the Marine Corps and one would think that Woody does at least some from his fortune 500 days.PK needs to ask Brett (his boy)why did want to re-retire from the Jets then try a seems to be attempt at a comeback for the Vikings? And ask the commish about compensation in draft picks for the Jets with his back and forth after they released him as a favor to him.Run tell that.

  33. [...] thejetsblog.com. Please read the complete article and let us know what you think [...]

  34. I used to read his column, but had given up doing it. I found him far too wordy to make his point. His column went on and on and on. I prefer people to state their point, and then tell us why without rambling all over the place, just to hear himself talk. Quantity over quality is his mantra.

  35. Peter King Kiss my ……… talking about dumb look in the mirror.
