Buzz: Denver Not Interested in Trading Brandon Marshall?

by Bassett on June 16th, 2009 at 12:15 pm

Well even though there’s news that Brandon Marshall might want to be out of town, it seems that he won’t get the Jay Cutler carpet ride from Denver, at least just yet.

For now, the team is not considering the possibility of placing Marshall on the trading block. With offseason workouts concluded, all Broncos employees are about to take some time off before reconvening to make final preparations for the start of training camp in late July.

I’m sure the Jets are interested, but the sheer truth is that as much as we fans would love for this to happen, I just don’t see the Broncos letting the inmates run the asylum twice in one offseason. From an on-the-field standpoint, adding Marshall would be an amazing end to the Jets string of moves and acquisitions.

Still, I always look at character and Marshall seems to have some issues he has yet to resolve in his life off the field, according to the linked timeline on ESPN.com. There’s always a delicate balancing act that GMs and teams have to consider when it comes to players, and for all the knocks that people can make against the Jets, character (in comparison to most teams) is rarely one that comes up for Jets players. I think the Jets might look, but his list of transgressions and recidivism is something that the team would probably weigh strongly.

This dude is a nightmare- Outside the Lines did a really nice piece on him a few weeks back, and the domestic abuse allegations were very troubling. The last thing I would want to do is give someone this immature a huge contract and expose him to New York city, and all that comes with it (nightlife and media). Seems like a terrible combination.

  2. avatar Kyle says:

Brandon Marshall is a game changer period.

I hope Tannenbaum is on the phone now offering a first rounder.

  3. avatar TJBfan says:

Does anyone think McDaniels will really let Marshall go to the Jets? I just highly doubt that if hes traded its within the AFC…especially the Jets.

  4. avatar Brett Justin says:

Yea they said the same thing that CUTLER wasn’t going to be traded either….. I would love nothing more then to get him hes a beast and is the exact piece that were missing…

  5. avatar Bent says:

What would the Broncos want the 32nd pick in the draft for, anyway?

    Ahem.

  6. Holy Jeez, this guy is a trainwreck. The Jets shouldn’t go anywhere near him.

  7. avatar GlockNSoul says:

Wow. Marshall puts Plax on the verge of sainthood. What is it with WR’s? Are they pampered that much more than any other position to produce these psychotic divas? Do WR’s ahve a missing gene that allows them to run and catch a football, but run into trouble off the field?

  8. avatar MEL31602 says:

While Marshall may have some off field issues he is not a guy who goes against his coaches and teammates like Plax and TO. I’d give up a second rounder for him

  9. avatar Lupz27 says:

Marshalls agent said in a meeting with broncos owner that they would try to accomadate Marshalls request to be traded, with all the off the field issues this guy has that is not a surprise to me that the owner would be willing to part with Marshall. The only problem I see is he is probably going to find out that while there is a market for him, no team is going to be willing to pay as much as the Broncos are going to ask for him. And on him going to the Jets they would have to offer way more than any other NFC team because just like the Cutler sitiuation they will look to trade him only to the NFC.

  10. avatar Fred says:

Brandon Marshall, Boldin, Coles, Chad Johnson, T.O., Plax. All this silly talk makes me happy to have young, humble, and talented receivers.

  11. avatar Brett Justin says:

Fred we dont have that though we have Jericho Cotchery thats it….Were missing that other guy

  12. avatar igs says:

The Jets could always take a run at Matt Jones. The Jets WR corp now is humble for a reason. There ain’t a lot of talent there. Outside of Keller and Cotch you got nothing special.

  13. avatar Beavis & Butthead says:

    Heh,heh…Bassett said “recidivism”…heh-heh-heh
    :-)

  14. avatar GlockNSoul says:

Stop with all the Matt Jones talk. He’s an underachieving cokehead. I’m willing to give him a second chance in life, but I don’t think his second chance in football is going to help us in any way at WR. The only difference between Matt Jones and J’Nathan Bullock (both have measurables) is that Jones has already proved he’s not an NFL difference-maker.

  15. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

…truth be told, I had to look that word up.

  16. avatar GlockNSoul says:

In Beavis and Butthead parlance, Brandon Marshall is “gifted.” Yeah – gifted !

  17. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

Bassett, I am confused by your article. You write, ” I just don’t see the Broncos letting the inmates run the asylum twice in one offseason”. The same brilliant coach is calling the shots for the Donkeys. Seems like there is no change so, again, I am confused.

    harlan

  18. avatar Bent says:

Glock – I don’t think Jones is necessarily the answer for the Jets, but he had 65 catches for 761 yards in 12 games last year. If he played every game he might have been a 1,000 yard receiver. Wouldn’t that make him an instant upgrade over anyone the Jets currently have to partner Cotchery? He might not be a “difference maker”, but he hasn’t he at least shown he can be a productive number two receiver?

  19. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

Glock – LOL ! Nicely played!

  20. avatar igs says:

Just watched the video. Whooooooooaaaa! this guy is a psycho. I hope all those guys that are talking about Jones and his coke are not asking for Marshall to come to the Jets with his constantly beating on women.

    Glock,
You’re not that naive. You and I both know that a lot of these guys do coke and Jones is just a guy that got caught once and then had a beer at golf game while he was on probation. While it’s not okay, stop acting like the Jets community if Mr. Roger’s neighborhood. Look at Rex. He’s addicted to food. lol.

  21. avatar GlockNSoul says:

Bent, unfortuantely, we have a stable full of # 2 receivers, so Jones does us no good there. He does have a nice size/speed ratio, and unfortunately, I think we’re all so desperate to fill that need, we’re looking at a lot of square pegs for our round hole……feel free to insert your jokes here

  22. avatar igs says:

    Bent,

And I would only add to that, as i keep trying to remind folks, that statistically, with the transformation from college QB to NFL WR. Jones is right on target in his development to All-Pro status. It’s not like he was supposed to come in and start playing like Randy Moss or something from the get-go.

  23. avatar GlockNSoul says:

igs, I’m willing to live with Ellis’ propensity (and i”m sure others) for bongs, but Jones just strikes me as someone who wil be a repeat offender. I agree, we don’t want a team full of boy scouts, but I don’t want to become the Bengals either.

  24. avatar igs says:

Glock, actually we have two #2 WRs and a stable full of 3s and 4s.

Jones still has #1 potential and, along with low leverage that could bring him in at a good price, is a very low risk.

  25. avatar igs says:

Glock, I’d love a team full of boy scouts (good role models). I just think it’s impossible to have and hypocritical to expect. Taking a risk every once and a while on a talented player, especially one that needs a chance to rise, is part of what makes teams successful. Every Super Bowl team needs a good comeback story. Remember Big Ben and his stupid bike?

  26. avatar steviek says:

What you usually hear is that if you have responsible people in the clubhouse and a few good leaders, guys who have troubles will go along and be influenced positively. If you get 3,4 or more problems that becomes kind of a tipping point, like the Bengals.
I think the Jets can afford 1 problem child. Look at Moss in NE. The again, the Giants couldn’t contain Burress.

  27. avatar Bent says:

Glock – the difference between Matt Jones being a number two receiver and the “stable full of # 2 receivers” that the Jets already have is that Jones is established, whereas the likes of Stuckey/Smith/Clowney are not.

Although you or I might believe one or all of them are that good (rightly or wrongly), there are those that don’t (rightly or wrongly) and they are probably the guys who want Jones.

Who is right and who is wrong will not be revealed until the season starts. In fact, if the Jets sign another WR, then we may never find out how good these guys are.

Bottom line, if the Jets think he is not a good fit because of his character or concerns about his off-field habits, then I trust them to make the right call, but Jones is a capable player and will probably contribute somewhere else next year for a pretty reasonable price.

  28. avatar Mr. Jet says:

Does anyone else get the feeling that we are a good WR away from being extremly unstoppable? Bottom line is we need one of them, Plax, Marshall, Matt Jones… anyone… we need someone that demands attention from the defense. RIght now, the way things stand, no defense is going to need to game plan for our passing offense. Just get tight coverage on Cotchery and plug the middle on Keller. ONE MORE GUY. Thats all I ask for Tanny. Make it happen… you are so close to taking us to the promised land.

  29. avatar igs says:

Thank you Mr. Jet. Somebody gets it. Just one player away. Now why would we look past that?

  30. avatar Tish says:

Why does this discussion only include receivers with legal issues? It sounds more like the receivers for the “Mean Machine”. What happened to the trade talk for Braylon?

  31. avatar Mr. Jet says:

I think its clear. WE SHOULD NOT LOOK PAST THIS. Anyone that says we are good to go with our WRs didnt watch the super bowl this year. One WR makes a huge difference, especially one of Plax’s calibur. If you look at the Ravens last year, yeah they had the best running game in the league, but when push comes to shove, Flacco had an ancient Derrick Mason as his number one reciever and they couldnt advance. Another element is Sanchez’s development. Why mortgage his future at this point with small WRs? Why not give him a huge ass target (even a Matt Jones) that can help reduce the room for error? We have the coach, the defense, the QB, 3 rbs and the swagger. Seal the deal with a pure number one reciever and we are good to go. Its so clear. To many fans are going with their hearts on this one and not their brains. The RUDY story cant come true for 3 unproven recievers at the same time.

  32. avatar starz31 says:

Mr. Jet, we need another WR yes…but we also need a QB. We have two, but one has 8 career starts and the other has 0. I’m just saying, we’re not one WR away from winning it all this year (i still believe lol)…

  33. avatar starz31 says:

Tish…we’re talking about Marshall b/c there is a very good chance he is one of the best WRs in the game and at his age. Fact.
He’s better than Braylon. That said, I don’t see how he gets traded first of all, and how we could really afford it. He’d cost close to what Cutler did.
I’m a fan of Braylon actually and I would be very interested considering the cost might be less.

  34. avatar starz31 says:

I honestly dont think character will be the deciding factor in regards to Marshall…and IMO, it shouldnt be.
It’s gonna come down to 1) are the broncos serious and 2) how much will it cost in a trade…and that answer is A LOT.

  35. avatar GlockNSoul says:

I’m all for a Braylon for TJ swap. Maybe TJ and a 4th and 7th for Braylon? Could we make that work cap-wise?

  36. avatar igs says:

Marshall was a 4th round pick. Value your picks. They mean something.

Just to add to what Mr. Jet was saying, Big Ben was rookie when he won the SB. But the Steelers FO had the foresight to make sure that he walked into a right (complete) situation, which allowed them to go all the waY.

  37. avatar igs says:

But in general I’m glad folks are acknowledging the need.

  38. avatar Mr. Jet says:

igs… agreed… even this year too, Big Ben finally got some WR help from Santonio who played terrible all season but stood out in the super bowl. We dont even have to mention the impact Larry Fitz had…

The thing is, im not even asking for a Brandon Marshall or a Braylon. I think Plax is the obvious BEST choice because we dont need to trade for him. But I like Matt Jones’ size. The point is we need to do something and stop pretending like we can go on like this. I hope this gets resolved before camp so everyone has time to learn the offense and get on the same page.

  39. avatar starz31 says:

Marshall being a 4th rounder isnt going to lower his value all that much…its the top-tier WR thing thats gonna be a factor in trade value

  40. avatar igs says:

See that’s what I’m talking about. To be a Jets fan doesn’t mean you sit around like an idiot and act like everything is okay when it’s obviously not. Props Mr. Jet.

  41. avatar igs says:

Star, I pointed out Marshall to demonstrate why it’s important to value the picks you have in the draft, 1-7 and more.

  42. avatar MSM says:

igs and Mr. Jet…. I totally agree guys… we really are only one player away. Could you imagine an offense of Jericho, Plax, Stuckey in the slot, Keller (BEAST), Leon, Thomas, and Shonn Mower (not to mention our above average o-line)? I mean the balance there is so perfect. Sooo many more options. How would you even cover that as a defense?? We MUST make a move. We are good enough to win now, lets become good enough to win later.

  43. avatar MLB Matt says:

No question, no hesitating, get this thing done. We need him.

As stated above, he is a gamechanger who is still very young. It’ s a no brainer if he is available.

  44. avatar starz31 says:

I got you Igs…i was thinking that anyways.

This Plax thing is gonna be interesting. Just in terms of what Goodell is going to do.

What is Matt Jones status anyways…havent heard anything about him. are teams interested? has he been suspended? I’m kinda intrigued why he is still available…there has to be more to his story than just his criminal record

  45. avatar starz31 says:

Shifting topics, but stemming from glocks and plax and jones….what do people think about Stallworth gettin 30 days in jail compared to lets say Vick getting 2 years.

  46. avatar igs says:

Sad, people don’t realize the weight of drinking and getting behind the wheel. He should’ve got 1st degree manslaughter and 10 to 15 at least.

Matt Jones is not facing a suspension from the NFL. He’s still on probation I believe. But as far as playing he’s scott free. (Don’t quote me on that.)

  47. avatar Joe Kusen says:

  48. avatar SackDance99 says:

The Jets have a WR deficit, but they have a potentially great pass-catching TE. When evaluating the WR corps, you have to include Keller (over 500 yards in only 6 starts) because the Jets under Schotty have put the TE in WR formations almost more than any other team in the NFL (and that was with Baker). I’ve been beating the drum on Plax, but the WR corps, including Keller, isn’t as bad as everyone is saying. Plax just makes it one of the best WR corps in the AFC. He would be a HUGE acquisition.

IMO, Goodell can’t discipline Plax, that would taint the jury pool. The NFLPA will jump up and down. Plax is facing a felony conviction and hard time, being essentially found “guilty” by the NFL would seriously impact the chance he could have a fair trial. No way Goodell messes with this…I can smell the lawsuit if he does.

  49. avatar SackDance99 says:

Of course, I meant that Goodell has to wait until after the trial or plea to discipline Plax, which he will do. But, if the trial is postponed to 2010, I don’t think Goodell can discipline him as I stated above.

  50. avatar EastSide says:

igs, you really are Matt Jones’ agent, aren’t ya? but in all seriousness, i commend your tenacity to getting a player that will bolster our WR corps even if i don’t agree.

Watched an interview with Marshall on espn over his domestic abuse allegations. While he is innocent until proven guilty, it seemed overwhelmingly that the man was a) a terrible liar and b) unapologetic.

I think the Jets best course of action would be to look towards the 2010 draft. At 6’7″ Memphis’ Carlos Singleton is a huge target who would be an interesting player to look at. OSU’s 6’2″ Junior Dez Bryant is drawing early comparisons to Crabtree with over 1000 yards last season and 19 TDs. As a junior, LSU’s 6’3″ Brandon Lafell made 60 receptions on a team with a terribly unresolved QB situation.

  51. avatar starz31 says:

sack…thats a fair and realistic approach. Goodell is quoted saying that he wont decide on a penalty until after the trial. but that was way before plax tried to wiggle the 2009 season in first. peter king addresses this in his article today at si.com

I agree, I dont think Goodell should do anything until the trial, but I also think its fair to assume he tries to. And anything he does, like you said, the NLFPA will be all over it. That said…these are all factors that teams have to consider when approaching Plax for 2009.

  52. avatar igs says:

Sack, Great TE can’t make up for WR. See Tony Gonzalez and the Chiefs.

East, I hear ya, but generally I just don’t even want to contemplate 2010, particularly one where we’re picking high enough to get Dez Bryant.

  53. avatar StvDoe says:

Marshall would cost WAY too much, both in terms of draft picks and monetary compensation. (And personally, I abhor domestic violence.)

I too am surprised that there’s been no talk about ANYONE being interested in Matt Jones. Is every NFL team so down on him? If so, is there more to the story than we know? Given the plethora of 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th chances in the NFL, why would NO ONE be sniffing his butt? Strange.

  54. avatar SackDance99 says:

    igs,

A great TE can make up for weakness in the WR corps: how about Green Bay in 1996 (Keith Jackson by far their best receiver), Broncos in ’97-’98 (Sharpe was a god), Ravens in 2000 (Sharpe, again, was the best receiver). But, probably the best examples were the Giants Super Bowl teams in ’86 and ’90 (Bavaro was the only guy defenses worried about) and the LA Raiders team in ’83, when Christensen was, by far, the leading receiver.

And, do you really think it was lack of WR talent that held KC back? How about their poor defense and inconsistent QB play? Or, Gonzo came of age in the Brady/Manning era? And, over the last couple of years, KC had Dwayne Bowe, who is a legit no. 1 WR, but they still stunk. Also, I think that Jericho and Stuckey, et al. can be better than the generally dismal WRs that Gonzo played with. My point is, if Keller is used as a WR, as he often is, then he has to be factored in and he’s a legit weapon, making the overall receiving corps better. No doubt Plax makes it much better, but Matt Jones is a waste of time.

  55. avatar igs says:

Sack, all those teams had WR that were good, not great, but good and complete. It’s not that the WRs were bad it’s just that they had spectacular TEs. I.e, the Ravens had Mason and Travis Taylor along with Holmes and Anderson with a 1st round QB (can’t remember name). They were a complete offense to go along with a great D.

  56. avatar Bent says:

“I’m all for a Braylon for TJ swap. Maybe TJ and a 4th and 7th for Braylon? Could we make that work cap-wise?”

For 2009, yes, but they might be a bit strapped for cash in 2010. It boils down to how sure you are that such a move would make the Jets a complete team, because the chances are that they wouldn’t have many decent resources to re-tool the team next year.

If they stick with what they have then they will have a little extra money and a better collection of picks to fill any needs next year and you never know, if one or more of these guys develops, maybe WR might not prove to be such a big need after all. Then they could maybe have a deep team and overcome any injuries instead of only contending in the unlikely event no key players get hurt.

  57. avatar SackDance99 says:

    igs,

Well, I think the Jets D will be very good and their running game should be top 5 in the NFL. Jerricho is a good NFL WR and Stuckey showed decent promise las year, which is when he saw his first NFL regular-season game action. So, maybe they can compare favorably to the team that I’ve mentioned.

I agree that Jerricho is better-suited for the no. 2 WR role because the no. 1 WR should be able to evidence separation skills. The only WR on the roster who, potentially, can do that is Clowney. Matt Jones has significant baggage and he’s still learning the WR position. He’s tall and fast, but he has trouble getting off the LOS and hasn’t shown great hands. I’m not sure that he’d start on the Jets. So, I’d prefer a legit no. 1 WR. But, unlike you, I think it’s preferable, not necessary, to add a legit no. 1 WR. The Jets can still have a potent passing game with what they have, but Plax makes everything easier.

  58. avatar JesusRevis says:

Brandon Marshall is arguably the most talnted receiver in the NFL. For this reason, the Broncos will not trade him

  59. avatar dade county jets fan says:
  60. avatar igs says:

Sack, the team we resemble didn’t make the SB for the same reason we won’t. When the Steelers stepped it up with Holmes, there was no answer from the Ravens. Getting off the line is just the next step in Jones’ development and strength training of which he is right on target. lease don’t talk to me about baggage when you’re recommending Plaxico “Two Guns” Burress. Who screwed his team with his actions and then apologized by turning his back on them.

  61. avatar Le'Sean Roberts says:

It should work out on both sides if Marshall was traded. Denver is rebuilding and McDaniels being in that situation should have at least a two season tenure. It will be a better situation here in the NYC than Denver; NYC is more lockdown than a open Colorado. From the previous incident with Plaxico the scene will be much tighter. More UC 5-o in those places. Also it doesn’t get any better than him.

  62. avatar igs says:

Forget about Marshall. The guy’s a wife beater. How can so many people say no to Matt Jones for sniffing some coke and drinking a beer on probation, and then push for Brandon Marshall who has a long history of assaulting women and engaging in otherwise violent and threatening behavior? I don’t some of you guys. Is wife beating ok?

  63. avatar Green Lantern #80 says:

No its not but you can’t convince your teammates to beat your wife or get drunk on probation… Or sleep with the Head Coaches daughter.

  64. avatar Dylan says:

    igs,
Probably because Marshall is one of the leagues elite receivers. I agree with you though that if fans are just choosing their players based on morality, Marshall is not your guy. I would be happy if we end up with Plax, Jones, or Marshall.

Marshall is only 25, and has over 1,200 receiving yards in his last 2 season. He is by far the best option available, but the asking price might be too high. imo the Jets should offer at least a 1st rounder, but i would be hesitant to give up more than a 1st and one of their young receivers (Smith, Wright, or Clowney). Marshall would be a long term solution at WR and would instantly gives the Jets a great receiving core.

Burress is one of the best receivers in football when he is healthy. At 31 years old he would greatly improve the Jets receiving core, but would be a short term investment. He could also still be suspended by the league and their is a chance he could be facing jail time. If he is able to play, Burress could help Sanchez develop into a good QB, while the Jets continue to search for or groom his replacement. Burress would be a great short term solution.

Matt Jones has flashed some potential, but been inconsistent throughout his career. There are some worries about his drug addiction, and the Jets would definitely need to evaluate him and make sure he is ready to give them his all. Jones would be an instant upgrade over all of the Jets receivers (except for Cotchery) and would most likely step right into the #2 receiver spot. They could most likely sign him for fairly cheap, and the benefits could be huge. He is definitely worth taking a chance on if Plax and Marshall dont work out, but at this point he isn’t a true #1 receiver like the other two.

  65. avatar igs says:

    Dylan,
Mat Jones hasn’t been inconsistent throughout his career. He just needs more time to grow into the position as he was not a WR in college. Therefore he’s right on pace.

As far as Marshall, I don’t care how great he is. He abuses women. Forget the guy. If there was a great athlete that went around randomly assaulting people you wouldn’t want him on this team. Not only would he a danger to himself and others but he’d be a risk to be taken out of society. But because it’s a woman and it’s in his home we classify it differently. That’s hipocrosy. I gladly take a guy who’s actively smoking crack on my team before I take a star player that beats up women. No thanks.

  66. avatar igs says:

And I don’t knw where the idea that Jones has dropsies. But the guy’s got really soft hands. And he is a better WR than Cotch already.

  67. avatar Green Lantern #80 says:

    igs,
How come you keep bringing up Marshall’s misdemeanors but you refuse to mention Matt Jone’s and cocaine.
And better receiver than Cotch? Really? That explains why you defend Matt.

  68. avatar igs says:

    Green, how’s this?

“I gladly take a guy who’s actively smoking crack on my team before I take a star player that beats up women.”

  69. avatar TJBfan says:

A big WR may help us on our road to the lombardi trophy but its certainly not the 1 player away. We have a QB which has not started a game, a defense full of talent but learning a new system and a tough division. 1 player isnt going to change any of those things.

A WR may rank us higher on paper, but as we saw(and highly enjoyed) even if a nearly perfect team does not execute come Sunday….they arent taking home the championship.

So yes, with in home or a bigger name its going to take execution to get to the championship. Last year bringing in the “1 player away” guy made us play sloppy and dumb(3rd and 1 shotgun). So with some of these WR, as talented as they are….it’s not worth the drama.

  70. avatar NYJ09 says:

    igs,
marshall doesn’t have any issues with teammates and he’s a potential superstar.. there’s a good chance some of these events were about extorting money although he has admitted he made mistakes in the past and that explains these consistent run-ins w/ the law, but i’d rather have that than a coke head like jones.. signing matt jones is a waste and a step in the wrong direction b/c matt jones isn’t the star solution they’re looking for, if they don’t want to get a player of marshall’s or braylon edwards’ or boldins’ caliber, don’t get any WR and play the guys on the roster

  71. avatar Joe A says:

Matt Jones is not nearly as good as cotch. He may have better physical attributes but the guy is not polished and will never become polished. It would be great to add a receiver but matt jones is not the answer.

  72. avatar Green Lantern #80 says:

Like is anybody offended as much as I am about this guy saying Matt Jones is better than Cotch?

  73. avatar igs says:

NYJ, of course you feel that way. I’m guessing you’re not a woman.

BEATING UP PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY WOMEN, IS WORSE THAN DOING DRUGS!!! The guy’s a 6’4 200something pound athlete and he’s standing outside having a fistfight with his fiance? lol. This is the kind of attitude you want to bring to this team? Come on guys, stand up for something.

Btw, for the Jets it doesn’t have to be a star player, it just has to be a player that’s ready to bloom. ;-)

  74. avatar Dylan says:

I agree Jones has potential but right now he isn’t nearly as good as Plax or Marshall. Jones could very well be the best move for the Jets, but it is fair to say that he is a much bigger risk (on the field) than the other receivers. All three of them have very different issues off the field which I don’t really know enough about to argue.

Jones had 5 drops in 12 games last year. That is among the leagues most, but it really isnt that big a deal at all. Brandon Marshall had 12 drops in 15 games which is much worse, and Coles had 8 in 16. I agree that the drops arent a big deal.

That said, Matt Jones is not as good as Cotchery at this point in his career. Jones has never had 800 receiving yards and Cotchery has done it 3 times. I know MJ was on pace for about 1000 last year, but there is no guarantee he would have. Matt Jones DOES have much more potential than Cotchery though with his 6’6″ height and 4’3″ speed.

Like I said, I would be happy with Matt Jones as a Jet, but right now he is not nearly as proven on the field as Brandon Marshall or Plaxico Burress. He is definitely low risk, high reward and could become a true #1 receiver for the Jets. I would be thrilled with Marshall, Plax, or MJ in green and white.

I’ll give Cotch more polish. Jones is a better pure athlete and has better measurables. He’s taken longer to develop because of the transition. Cotch numbers are a little better last season.

Will Plax play? Will he be suspended for the 1st 2 games? 4? 3? Will he go to trial before the season is over? Will he plea in september? Will he screw up again before the end of the season? Does he have any remorse about what he cost the giants? Peirce put his career on the line for Plax? How did Plax respond? Where’s the crew love?

Will Marshall beat up another women? Will he pull a Ray Carruth? How many times will he go to jail this season? What stupid thing will his anger cause him to do next? Will he assault one of his teammates that piss him off? SInce he likes to beat up his wife, throw rocks, intimidate women, what other lines will he cross?

Will Matt Jones relapse if he’s given another opportunity and has gotten through rehab? Had he already gotten through rehab as his next arrest was for drinking beer on probation, not copke related? Is he even an addict at all? Don’t most athletes do coke? What is this Sesame street? Who are we kidding?

And is it me or does everyone juts refuse to acknowledge the transition form college QB to NFL receiver?

Wideouts in the NFL are off their freakin rockers. Here is just a list of number 1′s who have issues
1 Randy Moss blazed alot in college, the walking off the field in Green Bay, quit on the Raiders
    2 T.O- i dont even have time
3 Steve Smith- broke his teamates face in practice
4 B Marshall- his pimp hand in strong
5 Plax- shot himself in the leg
6 Ocho Cinco- Been kicked out of more meetings than my alcoholic uncle Sal
    * Matt Jones loves the Columbian party powder, Chris Henry’s got more arrests than colleges I’ve attented and Donte Stallworth just killed some poor guy

Point is, its really hard to find elite recievers who dont have some kind of past. I think the only thing the Jets can do is evaluate it on a case by case basis and be really strict with the contract. If you do this, you dont get this and so on. I dont know what kind of package it would take to get a guy like Marshall, but even if its alot it would be a smart move to get a guy you just drafted to be your franchise QB and wideout who can go for 100 recs., 1500 and 10 TD’s

Acquiring Brandon Marshall for the Jets, there are going to be pros and cons. I believe that if he leaves Denver then maybe he won’t be getting into all that trouble and what not that he has been getting into if he comes to NY to play for the Jets. He is an absolute animal on the field, but his past is what might push people away but I highly doubt it is enough to make a team not go out and make an attempt to go get him. As long as he is putting up numbers on the field, catching passes, running clean routes, blocking etc; doing what they ask of him. You know not causing problems in the locker room I don’t see why you wouldn’t get him. The Jets are searching for a WR, since we just let Coles go, but i for one really like Clowney and Stuckey, i’m hopin that they will have a little more of an impact this season also. We have 3 solid running backs, and amazing O-line and i believe two smart quarterbacks depending on who plays, all we gotta do is manage the game on offense and play good D and we have a great defense. So it would be nice if the Jets traded for Marshall but if we don’t i know we’ll be fine.

He and Burress both have off the field issues, but Marshall is likely to have more longevity. I don’t like the distraction and Marshall’s criminal issues, but he could make a substantial impact on the field. First, the Jets need to make Leon happy, then they should go after Marshall.
