Shonn Greene’s contract was leaked to Pro Football Talk. The deal is a four-year deal with a $905,000 signing bonus and an escalator in the fourth year that can increase his base salary to either $1.3 million or the current low RFA tender for that year.

Sounds like a holdout in 3 years.

In the next 2 years Shonn Greene will have his contract tore up and he will be given a new one, especially after he shows what he can do after hitting the hole.

    neauone;

The Jets don’t tear contracts with 2 years or more remainig.

Can some one explain to me how its possible that we have so much money left in the salary cap. Was just on the Jets salary cap page and even after sanchez and Greene signing the Jets have about 11million to spend. Cant believe that with all the big moves we made over the last couple of years.
The other side is- time to spend that money to make our players happy. Give leon a 4-5 mil/year deal, TJ- give/ transfer his 3mil roster bonus for next year to this year, and most importantly- lock up mangold for the next 5-7 years with a nice contract extension worth 4 mil per year.

Brad rookies and vets are seperate caps iirc. The Jets spent alot on Sanchez but only had 2 other picks to sign. So our cap is still in good shape

Brad – Yes, they’ve added a lot of talent, but they’ve also got rid of a lot of high priced talent/deadwood over the last five years – Pennington, Martin, Robertson, Favre, Mawae, Abraham, Chrebet, Vilma, McCareins, Barrett to name a few. And of course the cap has been rising. Ultimately, they put themselves in a position to have a spending spree like this by not spending in Mangini’s first two seasons and using incentives to defer additional cap space into 2008 and 2009, where the free agent class was stronger and more suited to the Jets needs.

They’ve also managed to defer a lot of the money on the Scott, Sanchez and Lito deals into next year, leaving themselves some room to potentially be in the mix if there are any cap casualties they might like, but – as you suggest – the thinking is that they might use the cap room to reward existing players, whether it be with extensions or simply to bring forward money from 2010 to reduce the burden in that year.

Also, bear in mind that about half of their remaining cap space will need to be set aside to cover any escalator or incentives that might be achieved during the year.

TJBfan – the cap is not separate, exactly, but the NFL allocates an amount out of your overall cap that has to be used on your draftees. This did mean that there was always going to be $11m once the rookies were signed. You can’t use any unused rookie cap money on veterans.

Well, that’s clear .. Lets hope in 4 years we want to give hime big money because he’d be the featured back ..

thanks for the info Bent- u are the best at this numbers stuff! I forgot about the need to set money aside to cover escalators. So bent, how do u see the Jets using the extra 5-6 mil they have now? What do u think will be the compromise with Leon. Do they do anything with TJ and what about giving Mangold an extension?

  11. avatar Bent says:

I don’t usually like to make predictions, but Jason thinks they will do what I suggested above (use the cap room to reward existing players, whether it be with extensions or simply to bring forward money from 2010 to reduce the burden in that year).

Remember that they can give Leon and Mangold an extension whereby the money doesn’t kick in until 2010 (and therefore not use any 2009 cap space). Leon seems to want his money now though, so they might do his sooner.

I’m not sure they will do anything with Jones. If they aren’t sure they’ll keep him next year, they won’t advance him much money when they could advance money to a player they know they’ll keep and know that they will save that much money in a later year.

I wouldn’t have predicted the Favre move last year though, so if the Jets see a move (trade/FA) that could make them better, they might use the money for that and worry about the 2010 implications later, whether that’s by shedding players next year or just praying there won’t be a cap.

    Thanks for the prediction Bent!

I find it very difficult for the jets to have a successful running game this year without thomas jones being the starter.
