CBS Sports talked to Brian Schottenheimer and they asked him about the Jets second starting receiver.

Schottenheimer: Obviously Jerricho is our No. 1 receiver. We feel very good about that. We feel it’s time for him to get that opportunity to showcase his skills.

As we look forward to the season, we have a lot of younger guys we feel very good about. There have been a number of guys that have impressed us not only in the minicamps but also a little bit last year as we got going. Chansi Stuckey is a guy we feel very good about. He played quite a bit of snaps for us last year and had over 30 catches and is having a very good offseason. Brad Smith is a guy that for a couple of years played multiple spots, played him some at quarterback, played him some at receiver, and a lot on special teams. He’s developing into his own niche and we feel really good about how he’s developed and he’s had a terrific spring. David Clowney is another guy we feel very good about, a guy who has done nothing but impress us for two years with how hard he works. He came back off an injury last year and was able to get some playing time late in the season and made a great catch against Buffalo.

I think with Jerricho leading the troops and those three guys competing along with guys like Wallace Wright, Marcus Henry and some of the other guys, we feel really good about where that position is moving into. Obviously the big thing for those guys is consistency and taking advantage of the opportunities they’re going to be given, which we think that they’ll do.

Let me take you all back to the year 2006, it was summertime and Justin McCareins wasn’t on Mangini’s good side. The team had one viable starter and some no-name at the second WR spot. As I recall, two players ended the year with over 2,000 total yards and 173 catches between them. Their names were Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery.

My point? It makes great ink, but the Jets WR concerns will work themselves out. Would I welcome an elite talent? Of course, but I’m not going going to lose sleep over not having one either. Chansi proved last year he’s a reliable target, Brad Smith and David Clowney are showing off their upside, Wallace Wright is showing he might be more than a special teamer and then there’s the forgotten WR, Dustin Keller. Last year, the Ravens top two receivers combined for 121 catches and just over 1,700 yards. Believe me, this unit is in fine hands.

Further down the page, Schottenheimer does go on later to talk about how he’s blessed to be in New York and how it’s where he wanted to be. Maybe he’s had a change of heart (wallet) … and I won’t begrudge him that, but he can’t gloss over the fact that he was or was allowing his agent, Jimmy Sexton to float his name all around the league, even after the offer to him to stay on was made. I’m glad he wants to be here now, but he can’t act as if he’s really thrilled to be here, he wants a head coaching job, and he’ll do whatever he can to go get one.

  1. I hope Schotty can get back to his offense this year. With the playbook dumbed down for Favre, last year was a wash for him.

  2. Heres and article about the pressure thats on schotty

  3. I think he will do a good job this season ..

  4. I have a lot of confidence in Schotty. I just hope he doesn’t try to get too cute with trick plays too often. With our O-Line and 3 quality backs, we should run run run the ball all day. Something Rex preaches is that we don’t need to outsmart our opponents we just need to out-execute them.

  5. Schottenheimer scares me. He has been horrible tor the past two years. I am shocked that they kept him, because he was as much a part of the problem as Mangini. No excuses, this year. Get it done or be gone.

  6. Translation…

    Cotchery is our #1 =
we don’t have a #1 WR and we know it. We are in the market for one now, but don’t want the fans to hold us to it.

Brad Smith has played multiple spots =
We still think he is a gimmick player… he is not good enough to play WR on a regular basis.

Chansi Stuckey is a guy we feel very good about =
We feel good about him as our slot #3 WR… we still need a #1 WR to draw the double team away from Cotchery.
