News: Jets Claim Big Deep Threat WR
I told you they were fans of the waiver wire…

Scout.com is reporting that the Jets have claimed another player off waivers, this time WR Mario Urrutia from the Bengals.
Urrutia was a legitimate deep threat in college and has tremendous size (6′6″, 232), but was unable to make it onto the field last season with the Bengals after they drafted him in the seventh round. Originally touted as a possible day one pick, after a freshman year which saw him average 21.7 yards per catch, Urrutia eventually entered the draft early after a disappointing Junior year which saw him miss four games with injuries. He then saw his stock fall, after running just 4.58 at the combine, but was able to get himself drafted with a slightly better Pro Day (4.53 forty, 35 inch vertical and a flawless performance pass catching in position drills.)
Urrutia was a two time second team all-Big East WR with obvious physical gifts, but also had a very questionable attitude in college (examples after the jump) and saw his toughness questioned by fans after his disappointing 2007 season.
My scouting notes from that 2007 season are after the jump.
- v Middle Tennessee: Costly personal foul with ball on the goalline forced them to settle for a field goal … 71 yard TD as he slipped a tackle on a quick slant and then just about outran two DB’s to the goalline … 23 yard TD as he used his body to shield DB on quick slant at 15 and then slipped tackle to run to the endzone…Finished up 7-142-2TD in a 58-42 win
- v Syracuse: Dropped a couple of passes … Made short catch at sideline and then foolishly threw ball at DB to draw penalty…Overall: 8-81 in a 38-35 loss
- v WV: Struggling with injury … Catch on crossing route and got outside for 14 … Catch and run on post route for 28 … Nice adjustment in air to leap up for catch on sideline and get foot inbounds for 12 yard TD…Finished 3-54-TD in a 38-31 loss

Forget the deep threat stuff, think lumbering. The concern here is that Marcus Henry and Huey Whittaker have not stepped up. The Jets need a big wideout, good luck Mario, maybe we should have drafted Ramse Barden in the third….
Our savior!!! Who needs Plax, Edwards, Jones or Boldin, etc?? Not us….We got Urrutia!!!! *rolls eyes*
Worth giving the guy a shot. It’s still early in the “process”. More to come. If he leaps tall buildings, a keeper. If he hasn’t matured, our defense will needle him: Next! I like the “due diligence” of looking under every rock. Flavors the summer doldrums with lots of “what ifs”.
Huey Wjittaker has reportedly been excellent so far. I see this as a shot at getting a good player – cheap. Who knows what will happen when kids get a shot finally? The more competition we have the better off we are!
I refuse to get even a tidbit excited about this. He was the 34th WR taken last year (out of 35) and there wasn’t even one taken in the 1st Round! He was drafted AFTER Marcus Henry – who has not impressed.
I have decided to take the “We got what we got” approach and root for Clowney (no matter how ghetto his tweets are) Smith and Stuckey to make an impact.
Mario left early from Louisville, after a bad season, with multiple injuries… Looks like a bad choice… The Kid believed in his own press clippings or a bad agent.
If he stays for his senior season, he gets picked in the fourth round, and some team will give him a couple of years to develop… Now he is on his second team, facing long odds to make a roster
Special Teams just got a little bigger. Now we need a WR
“Forget the deep threat stuff, think lumbering.”
Well, I was careful to say he “WAS a legitimate deep threat IN COLLEGE”!
I know there’s a 99% chance this guy amounts to nothing, but if you believe the “it takes three years for a project WR to make an impact” philosophy, then he’s worth a look – and we did get Clowney off waivers and he’s about to enter year three, where he may or may not deliver on that promise, so Urrutia could show similar promise and therefore the timing makes sense. If not, you’ve lost nothing.
Please don’t interpret the fact that I made a detailed post about the guy as me saying he’s the saviour – it’s just a quiet time of year, so we may as well shine the spotlight on our latest project before anyone else does.
“The Kid believed in his own press clippings or a bad agent.”
At the time, he said the main reason was because of the injuries in his Junior year. He didn’t want to risk more injuries and therefore never get to be drafted. He was regarded as somewhat arrogant though in some circles, which can’t have helped the decision making process.

Nice!
More camp fodder?

when you said
“I told you they were fans of the waiver wire…”
i heard
“we’ve found our pro bowler WR”
To Late you said it, now you have to stand by it.
Hey he is another big WR! U will figure they will keep one Big WR- practice squad unless one really impresses. More Competition for Henry, Whitaker.
Those above rooting for clowney, stuckey, and smith; forgot to mention Mark Sanchez’s favorite WR- Wallace Wright. If he continues to be Sanchez’s favorite WR, expect to see him on the field a lot more.
I just hope one of them steps up and becomes legitimate!
I like the move. At least they are doing something…
Clearly Tanny isnt settled on the WRs we have. He basically trying to fit the mold of Plax’s size, without getting Plax.
Give Sanchez a big target, thats all I ask.
We picked up a bladder infection on waivers?
THe Waver Wire? What is it that Triumph sadi about Sugar Ray and Bon Jovi and butt mucus?
BUt I like this move. It ain’t the first rate move that I’m looking for. But I like him at Louiseville.
96d – Rats! (Or as a Pats fan would say “Manginis!”)
Maybe they’re using him as a Plax-type guy to see whether the QBs respond well to having a weapon like that and then that can factor into their decision making process on whether to go for him later.
Not a bad guy to take a flyer on. At over 6-5, he’s a match up nightmare and it sounds like he has the ability, but needs to work harder. With the Jets no.2 WR spot wide open, this could be Urrutia’s shot to make it in the NFL. In some ways this guy sounds just like Burress, who had his draft stock plummet with a disappointing 40-time (4.6) and questions about his attitude.
Hmmmm, good call Sack.
Remember how disappointing Larry Fitz 40-time was? Well as long as he can get seperation on the field, that is all that matters.
Looks to me more like a move to pressure the other two big guys at receiver to possibly step it up.
Also isn’t it every training camp that a wide receiver is “impressing” and then ends up doing nothing for us the upcoming season? Remember how good Reggie Newhouse was? I still remember Lucas raving about the potential in this kid, oh really? Where is he now???
“Looks to me more like a move to pressure the other two big guys at receiver to possibly step it up.” My initial thought was that maybe it is Clowney who’s under the gun as the deep threat, although I’d talked myself out of that before I committed myself to it in the original post.
“Remember how good Reggie Newhouse was?” Yup, and several others. It seems like our 6th WR (sorry, but I still see Wallace as ST1 not WR6) is the toughest cut every year and never amounts to anything (not in the NFL, anyway). At least it makes the annual roster contest (which I would have won last year, had I not been ineligible) more of a challenge!
Isn’t Urutia from higher draft stock than Henry the same year. At least projection-wise. He was projected in like the 4th or 5th I think. I think he’s a step up from the big WRs in the group in terms of potential.
A 4.53 forty isnt bad at all for a man who is 6′6 230. I like this move he sounds like an athletic kid and with some coaching may turn into someone who can contribute.
Would love to see Henry and this kid make the roster… big targets are critical in the 2nd half of the season in windy north-east games.
