The AFC Wars: The East Edition
The AFC East [is still on sale until Aug. 1, all inquiries must be heard by Roger Goodell] is beginning to heat up even more, like an egg on the sidewalk. The Fins linebacker, Akin Ayodele mentioned that there will be more “edge” to the Monday night game come October after the Rex Ryan vs. Channing Crowder’s bit and added how it was “immature” for a HC to fire back with words of his own.
“That’s the wrong person to get in a bickering war with, because he can talk all day — that’s Crowder,” Ayodele said. “If he’s going to be our voice, then we support him, understanding that I’ve been in the league a while, and I’ve just never seen a head coach get into a bickering war with a player. It was kind of immature if you’re a head coach.”
I don’t know if its because Miami won the division last season or because they are trying to keep up with the jabs but either way, Ay
odele doesn’t know Ryan very well. From the beginning Ryan said he wasn’t going to take any crap and now Ayodele is just adding more fuel to the fire. Good to see that everyone is staying sharp but it is going to come down to who outplays who now with the AFC East becoming more competative, words are no longer going to serve as ammunition for the battle.
Now all we need is for T.O. to chime in and we’ll be good to go.

When the NFL starts awarding game points for good quotes and trash talking, this type of stuff might become a good thing.
At this point, all it does is distract the mediaots and some fans from the hard work of building a winning team.
I assume it will not distract the FO, coaching staff or players (and may even insulate these efforts as the distractions act like smoke and mirrors), and if it doesn’t, then who cares.
No points for style or flames.
harlan
Typical fish stuff… win once in like 15 yrs and start talking. Nobody cares about Ayodele or Crowder because they both wear teel pants on sundays !
Rex really didn’t say anything “immature.” He had to answer because he is NOT like some other coaches we have had….. he creates teams that want to hurt people and I am very excited to see it.
Squish the Fish son !
Pdubbs;
To be fair, Rex is the one who started with the verbal Jabs, not the players !!!
The fact is that the Fish has won three (3) division titles in the last 15 years.
Not real sure why people are taking this so seriously. In watching the press conferences it’s clear that Rex Ryan was kidding around and was not actually talking trash. Him saying that he could take down Crowder and all the rest of it was completely and obviously tongue-in-cheek.
Just Jokes:
” I have WALKED OVER guys like Cowder to get to a fight “— Rex Eyan. I call that borderline insulting, not joking.
Hank,
Why don’t you find another team to root for! You obviously don’t like the Jets, you always critisize the FO, and coaches, and you almost always take the other sides position. You cannot seem to get past the fact that the FO made the hard choice and got rid of Pennington because they saw his limitations. I’ve already heard (read) you put down Sanchez, why? because he was choosen by Tannenbaum?
From my POV, it was Crowder who started this by commenting on what Rex said about the Patriots, Crowder was upset that Rex was not giving the Fish respect from winning the division.
Hank,
So what if it was insulting, why should we care if Rex insulted a dolphin’s player? I hope Rex does it again. IMO, this was a calculated move by Rex to get in the collective heads of the division. Did you see the press conferense after the Crowder fiasco? Sparano couldn’t get the media to talk about anything else but that, it was great! I hope he keeps on doing it.
The Fish had a 6-year playoff drought that ended last year and now they’re crowing. I think they should be more concerned that Chad is 1-6 against the 3 principal blitzing NFL defenses (Eagles, Ravens, Steelers) and the win was likely a fluke…6-0 at the Meadowlands in a blizzard. Chad hasn’t beaten a Rex Ryan defense, yet. This season, he gets to face the Jets twice and the Steelers (but, he’s lucky that he’s playing the Steelers the last game of the season, which could be a meaningless game…if the Steelers have something to play for, the Fins should consider having Pat White run the Wildcat the whole game). Plus, he’s never had 2 good or healthy seasons in a row. I think that they should worry about their season more than what Rex has to say.
Hank/Naples,
Once again you prove the old adage, better to be thought and idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
You point to the quote as insulting, but you are READING it, not watching him say it, so all meaning and intention are inferred by you and incorrectly at that. If you WATCHED the footage of the press conference you would know that it was said completely in jest, he could hardly even keep a straight face while he was saying it, and immediately burst into to laughter, along with the entire throng of media in attendance, after he said it.
Another fine job of analysis by you though, keep up the good work.
ramble914:
When it comes from Rex, i’ts a joke. When the opposing player replies in kind, it’s an insult or crowing and out comes the bashing. I see that as a double standard and I have no respect for double standards. Regadless where !!
And for your information, I’m not bahing anyone here just pointing out facts. I’ve been a Jets fan since possibly before you ( about 1966) and we’ve had a bad enough name arround the NFL, without our coach adding fuel to the fire. Let the team earn “bragging” rights first before he puts his foot in his mouth.
sec 108:
I did see the conference and it was instigated by Rex, TWICE.
Question: If it’s all in fun, why all the bashing on those that respond?
It’s all in fun. It’s about time we had a coach with some swagger and an attitude. The Dolphins win one division and lose their first playoff game, and they think they’re hot s**t?!? Maybe they should worry about how Chad has never started all 16 games two years in a row, or how we are gonna completely shut down that wildcat.
FYI- Rex didn’t start with Chowder. Rex made the “kiss the rings” comment and then Chowder had to but in. Rex is just trying to have fun and Chowder got a little defensive. So what if we haven’t won yet. Why can’t our coach be confident?
Hank,
IF responding to snippy remarks by Crowder with an obvious (to everyone else on the planet but you apparently) joke is instigation, then yes, I stand corrected, Rex started it. And I’m pretty sure Woody and Tannenbaum made the decision for the US to invade Iraq AND loosened the lending regulations to the point where the sub prime mortgage crisis caused the collapse of the credit markets and our current economic malaise.
Has ANYONE ever associated with the Jets done ANYTHING you have liked or supported since the drafting of Chad Pennington?
Hank,
Crowder is the one that started the verbal ping pong when he said he didn’t know how drafting a quarterback makes the Jets tougher and they are the supebowl champs of minicamp. It was those comments and others that Rex responded to and joked about.
Hank, give it a rest, please. While I have not been around since the dawn of the Jets, that doesn’t mean you care any more or less than I do, or that you know any more/less than I do. It just means you have a different perspective on being a Jets fan.
I may be relatively young to you, but I have been around long enough to know that Rex is something that the Jets have needed for some time. Not because he’s a joy in press conferences and interviews. Herm Edwards was as entertaining as any coach I’ve seen in those scenarios. And granted, while coming off a tenure of Mangini, Rex is a breathe of fresh air to most of us, entertainment is not his talking’s sole purpose.
This team has been seeking identity for some time. Not notoriety, we have that in spades (albeit mostly negative), but an identity. Sure, we were a 3-4 defense with a pro-set offense, but we lacked an identity. Rex is instilling that in his players, whether they choose to accept the challenge or not. They will be aggressive. They will fight with their rivals. They will not back down or take any sh$t from ANYONE. And Hank, that is a team I have craved for years. So what if our head coach is juvenile in his bickering with rival players? What’s the worst that can happen? As a jets fan, do you really care if the media and the lot call our team any more names than they already have?
One of the most underrated aspects in sports is the “THEY NEVER BELIEVED IN US!!” (copyright- Bill Simmons) aspect. Rex is creating an “us against the world” locker room, which is the most dangerous kind of locker room in sports. He wants guys to realize that outside of this team, there is not a single person who gives them legitimate respect, and not a single team that is going to give them an inch.
The league(and the media that covers the league) needs to turn up their sense of humor.
It’s kind of funny how seriously the Dolphins are taking it.
Hank … ur a stand up guy playing it down the middle…. but I am a Jets fan and therefore, will always hate the dolphins.
Hate on Rex….
Two things:
1) Miami will find it harder to mouth off when they are playing a season based on an 11-5 difficulty versus 1-15.
2) Is it just me, or is Coach Ryan writing checks he’s not sure he can cash? I mean, if the Jets start off 3-0 and have a stellar D in the process, then great, but those first 5 weeks are no gimmees, especially with a rookie QB at the helm
Maybe it’s possible to “take no crap” and not voice it outside of the locker room? Just a thought.
Ohhhh mmy … I feel like we have some dolphin fans in this blog … Just shut up Hank and support your team .. I live in Miami and have to listen to these dolfans talk trash all day long ! They are the worst fans in the world cuz when they do bad they talk bad about there own team and u sound like them .. SUPPORT ur damn team .. If Rex wants to beat chanting crowler up then u should back him up if ur a True fan .. U should be ashamed to go against ur head coach who is standing strong for his team! Stop hating him and hate the dolphins or join them dude! Rex Ryan is the man! And I got his back all day .. Just watch how we torture those phins . Thanks to REX
I thought it was childish. I’m into people proving things instead of running their mouths. Hearing him I can tell why Baltimore didn’t promote him to HC. Doesn’t mean he has any less support from me due to it of that Channing Crowder is any less of a tool.
My take on Rex is that he has looked at his defense, seen the tape and is convinced that he has a dominating defense. He will need his defense to carry the offense with a rookie or inexperienced QB. So, all of his talk is directed at the defense…to play with confidence and swagger. IMO, the Jets have 7 defensive players that are well-above average (Rhodes, Revis, Pace, Harris, Scott, Jenks, Ellis). The rest of the starters (Leonhard, BT, Sheppard and Douglas) are, at least, average with upside potential. Plus, the Jets have another 7 guys who could break out (Murrell, Trusnick, Gholston, Cummings, Westerman, Lowery. E. Smith). Rex has to insulate his group from the naysayers and he’s doing a great job. I expect a top 5 defense that will hold the opposition to under 300 points for the season…the talent is there. Also, I think that the Jets have enough defensive depth to weather any single injury because Rex’s defense is flexible enough to be tailored to the personnel (although the Jets need Jenks, Revis and Scott on the field to maximize the D’s potential).
I think it’s premature to criticize Rex until we see the team on the field. I think the talking has a purpose…he’s not a “same old Jets coach” and his team won’t be the “same old Jets.”
hank/naples, your the worst jet fan on this blog.
If a group of guys are joking around and some guy come over and gets upset cause he doesnt like what their joking about, it highly likely hell catch hell from the group.
Zartan:
The only ones upset are those that bash one side (dolphins) while praising the other for the same thing. That is called hypocrisy. And this is what upsets me.
I learned at a very early age (paid my dues so to speak) no to make checks unless I have funds in the bank.
This is going to be possibly one of the best football seasons ( for me it has to go a long way to match the Sack Exchange/ Walt Michaels era) to be a Jets fan.
Michaels was a burbon drinking coal miners son that chewed nails and his team chewed glass for fun !! They did NOT talk about it , THEY DID THEIR TALKING ON THE FIELD.
I love the Jets as much as any one (front runners wagoneers excluded) but I will also follow the Phins (Pennington) and Browns (Mangini) and I feel for those that can’t take opposite oppinions !!!
I have not bashed any one, just stated hard cold facts!!
Wow, let’s all pile on Hank!
You guys are making me feel sorry for him, in spite of the fact that I think he’s totally wrong. Ryan was CLEARLY joking with his “walked over tougher guys” comment.
Most of us seem to love Rex’s attitude.
As for those who fear that if the Jets fail Rex’s mouth will come back to bite us, I still say “who cares?”.
I hated losing under ANY coach, no matter what he says. I took crap from fans of opposing teams no matter what our coach said or didn’t say. That won’t change no matter how much bluster our HC exhibits. Winning will change that, nothing else.
As for you Hank, I’ve RUN over tougher guys than you in a desperate effort to avoid getting my ass kicked!
Hank, you continue to mention that you are only stating FACTS, yet this was your first post on this topic:

Umm, nope, not a fact at all, unless by fact you mean incorrect statement. Crowder started this when he was told Rex’s comments about the Pats still being the class of the division but that he wouldn’t be kissing their rings. He was indignant that the rest of his division wasnt taking the dolphins seriouosly as contenders even though they won the division at 11-5 last season. So he sounded off. Nobody respects us, boo hoo, cry me a river.
dude that game is gonna be so nasty, this is going to be like the recent steelers – Ravens games, all out passionate hitting.
I LOVE IT.
StvDeo:
Thanks for your sympathy but not necessary.
I have absolutely no problem with talking a good fight. I LOVED Cassius Clay ( my father hated him) from the start to see if he could back-up his mouth. To me, he is the greatest athlete and boxer/fighter that ever lived !! So to me the build-up, the electricity, the expectations are, more often than not, greater than the event. However, this guy is the coach, not the fighter. It would be the same as Dundee mouthing of to Frazier. It just doesn’t work, it distracts, takes away from the athlete. And if the athlete fails, then EVERYTHING goes up in smoke and you, the athlete is reduced to NOTHING. Why put your team in that position? It is just plain stupid and we would become even more of a laughing stock. Like I said, The Sack Exchange did not need to mouth off. Number 99 did his sackdance AFTER every sack, and he was able to dance a lot !!
My problem is with those that say its all in fun while bashing the opposing player for the same same thing.
I hope for all of us collectively that we beat the Texans AND have a winning record within our division. If we don’t, I am shure that most frontrunners in this blog will disappear and we faithfull are left to answer the calls to arms.
Maybe if we had a coach like this last year we wouldn’t have to hear anything from Crowder and his teel pants.
Blame Favre but our D went soft along with the rest of our team….. something tells me we wont see that this year or any year under a guy like Rex. He is the type of guy that values chemistry and motivation rather then stats and whatever else mangini found important.
Pdubbs;
Marquees is not the answer, maybe DeVito. Just pray to God that Big Jenk does not get hurt !!
Then who will stop the run Thomas?
I don’t know … i want to believe that players and teams can be better then they are with motivation…… i.e. cards or titans even the Jets (1st year with Mangini). Maybe with this new blitz first worry later scheme we will stop the run with anybody.
It was said many times that the Ravens D felt like they had to do well for Rex…. I think we are seeing that now. These guys feel closer and more confident with this trash talking coach. Cmon the Ravens have good players but, they wanted to kill people which is what kept them in alot of games and made them intimidating to other teams….It all comes from the coach.
all trash talking is immature an useless it goes on every week all the time….. I’m just glad we have someone with the balls to do it now.
Brendan:
Just read your post and I totally agree with you perspective. Your outlook and objectivity is really 100% on cue and I agree completely. But I can NOT give it a break to those that have double standars and are shortsighted to everything outside of their self gratification. The beautifull thing about sports is that there will always be the opponent, that must be valued and respected.
hank/naples,
Everyone seems to forget that when a healthy David Harris replaced Vilma in the second half of the 2007 season, the run defense drastically improved, even with D-Rob as NT. Now, Harris is healthy, again, and he has Bart Scott, not Eric Barton, next to him. Also, Rex’s defense is flexible to fit the personnel (he can go 4-3, if necessary). Last season, Baltimore’s NT, Kelly Gregg, got injured, but the Ravens’ D didn’t skip a beat. With Jenks, Scott and Revis healthy for 16 games, the Jets defense will be top 5. And, they might be able to survive and still be elite if any one of them is injured, but let’s hope that doesn’t happen. Plus, Green gives the Jets depth beyond just Pouha behind Jenks. Why do you diss Douglas? He knows the system and should play at least as well as Coleman. Plus, DeVito is behind him, so there’s good depth.
hank/naples,
Crowder was disrepectful to the Jets and Ryan responded in a definite tongue and cheek manner. Is it disresepct to tell a bully that you won’t be a pushover?
Pdubbs:
I caleed for DRex signing (not sighting) form day one because I felt and SAID SO on this blog BEFORE he was sig the Rex would be the only STEP UP for the Jets from Mangini.
And you are right !! Rex will make the Jets D Better !!!
But that is NOT the point. The point is two fold. One, he can not replace the players in mouthing off about the face of the franchise and two, he must accumulate some credibility chips for this team, for crying outloud !!!
It hard enough going to Miami to watch the Jets play the Phins as is is BEFORE Rex, can you imagine NOW?
It’s OK for you guys @ HOME, how about the other Jet fans that live OUTSIDE of NY.
Comming from the coach takes on a different perspective and Rex should be smart enough, mature enough to know that !!!
Hell yea ! you have to tell the bully whats up ! i want us telling everyone we’re gonna rough em up.
Pdubbs:
You are right, however everyone outside of NY already sees New Yorkers as beign the bullies, even way before Rex.
Sack:
I’m not a stats man, my son Fonzie is, but I can tell you that out of Revis, Jenkins and Scott the only one one that is CRITICAL there to stop the run is, you know, Big Jenk. Also DH is not proven that he can be healthy all year at his (new) weight. So, we can not bet the ranch on him.
Also, please don’t tell me Marquees will be better in persuit agaisnt the run than Coleman and Pouha will be adequate backup for Jenkins, please dont !!!
So, again, pray that Jenkins does not get injured early.
Football is not a game for the timid. In the words of Wesley Snipes ” You either smoke or u get smoked”. This is what you signed up for when you got Rex. This guy has this game and league in his blood. He has been around football teams his whole life. These media clips are nothing more than motivational tools to get Bart and the boys to try and kill people. We’ve needed a guy like this for years. I m not even a player and Id shoot flames out my ass for em.
Hank I know you can hear me,
If I have to hear about the Browns or Phins or another lecture on how unenlighted we all are, Im gonna start a petition to get you kicked off this site or just throw up, I havent decided yet
I seem to remember that while with the Jets, Parcells had his share of verbal scraps with opposing players.
Can anyone else remeber any specific incidents?
Can someone tell me how Hank is more qualified than Rex Ryan to decide that Kenyon Coleman cannot be replaced on the defensive line. Hank you’ve never seen Douglas play because if you had you’d know that he is great against the run. Kenyon Coleman sucks and made too much money to be a two down player. Of all those tackles he piled up I bet less than 5% of them were made behind the line of scrimage. Pursuit against the outside run in a 3-4 is the OLB responsibility, if Coleman was making those tackles it was because he was pushed backwards and not in the B and C gap where he was supposed to be. I thought you would have known that from your vast football expertise, oh wait you never played the game. YOu dont know enough about the scheme or defensive strategy to make statements like that. Also, If you think Bart Scott is not a key guy in the run d you’re even more delusional than I thought
Hank,
Are you really suggesting that Rex tone it down so that it’s easier for out of town Jets fans to attend games?!?!
I mean, that’s just absurd. It’s the LAST thing a coach would even consider, nevertheless act upon!
“Let’s not offend any other teams so their fans will be nicer to our fans.”
You’ve GOT to be kidding me.
StvDoe:
Take it for what it’s worth and anyway you wish, but contrary to what you think the coaches trash talking is NOT well received in all corners of the universe, specially in the home stadiums of teams in our division. New Yorkers are perceived as having a certain “aura”, a NY type swagger, a credence, even an accent that separates us from others. It’s similar to the view europeans have of Americans.
It’s easy for someone to trash talk in the confines of your own home, but try walking into enemy stadiums with a Jets Jersey and a bulls eye on you back painted there by your coach.
Specially when you haven’t won anything yet.
lol.. and I thought the NFL was a MAN’S sport.. I guess Ayodele doesnt consider himself as a mature adult..
If an act is immature for a coach.. it should be immature for a grown man of 25-35 yrs of age..
ps – if Rexy didnt care for Crowder.. who the X is Ayodele? lol
All of you BUDDY BOY word eaters and fans from Miami!!!
It seems that you don’t understand.
BUDDY BOY WILL PUT AN END TO THE DIVISION!!!
HE WILL BACK UP HIS WORDS BUT ULTIMATELY HE WILL FAIL!!!!!!!!
HE IS DESTINED TO FAIL!!!!
Fonzie, please elaborate on the imminent failure of Rex Ryan
hank/naples,
I think I said that Green AND Pouha now back up Jenks. Plus, like I keep saying, Rex was great at using the personnel handed to him and maintaining his defensive philosophy. So, if God forbid, Jenks goes down, maybe he employs a 4-3 look? Stopping the run was a Ravens hallmark. The whole goal is to force the offense into obvious passing downs and blitz the heck out of them…like the 46. Plus, I have no idea what weight Harris will play at or whether he will play the TED or MIKE. Because Rex likely wants the ILBs to be interchangeable, there’s a chance that Harris will have to be leaner. Do you have any info on Harris’ weight?
Pete57,
He hasn’t created a model of consistency or specific path on how his team will be structured. Has he continued building the bond of the team by shortening camps and taking the team out to support the community like Mangini did or has he even brought in guest speakers to help the jets after putting them through a grueling offseason so far. To my knowledge he has had a few players and coaches hurt. He talks way too much Pete. Come on now who does he think he is. Not even belichick who can be nasty at some times picks fights with other players.
Correction:
through a grueling offseason so far?
SackDance,
I will speak for my father here.
You obviously don’t pay any attention to the health of the players. Greene and Pouha right now can only benefit from the play of kris jenkins so even if they were on the field at the same time they would have to struggle to dominate the trenches like kris jenkins does. When it is all said and done SackDance and its time to execute your basic gameplan which is the base 3-4 for this defense will you dominate the trenches to win the game? This defense, this team is only as good as its weakest link. The weakest link of this defense is the front line. BUDDY BOY can substitute linebackers to defensive ends and whatever he thinks will work but will they dominate the game when it is needed? I truly believe that they don’t have enough on the line to get the job done. Harris might come into came 10 pounds lighter or heavier, who knows. The fact is last year he had a difficult job playing against the guard and being stretched to cover the field against quicker runningbacks and tight ends. I don’t believe Scott can do what Harris tried to do because I haven’t seen Scott play in 3-4 base consistently. BUDDY BOY never tried it baltimore. Scott can believe on the jets that he their ray lewis but I am not worried about a ray lewis I am worried about who is going to plug that hole next to jenkins and keep the offense back. Its fine that Harris and Scott can change roles just as long as best one or the one that needs to do the job on 4th and short or third and 5 and deliver the game to the jets.
Fonzie, guest speakers? Charity events? This is what you consider to be essential to building a winning team? That was all a joke, right? I know you are smarter than that.
Model of consistency? Can we waite until he’s been HC for more than 10 mins to make a judgement on that?
Specific path? He wants a dominating defense and a run first offense. And he brought in players (Scott, leonard, etc on D, Shonne Greene, etc on O), to build towards that. What specific path are you looking for?
I believe Ryan is going to be successful, but none of us will know until he has had 3 years or so, like Mangini.
But, have you listened to what the players have been saying since he was hired? Every player to a man, not only likes the hiring, but they are extremely fired up to play for this guy. So, in my opinion, putting that together with his track record of success as a defensive coach, and I lean toward thinking he will be good.
Fonzie,
do you just make things up as you go along? You haven’t seen Bart Scott play in the 3-4 consistently? He never tried it in Baltimore? The reason he got on the field in the first place is because the Ravens switched to a 3-4 BASE defense. You twist facts to make your points. You arent gonna be happy unless Mangini is coaching the team, going 8-8 every year, boring us all to death. I’ve never seen a person as oppionated with as little knowledge of the game. Im almost positive that you never played any team sports with attitude you have, and if you did you spent alot of time stuffed in lockers. You are a horrible fan and the last guy Id want in a foxhole next to me Private Upham
Pete57:
Buddy Boy has not shown any consistency. If anything, the only consistency has been his inconsistency. Saying he wants a dominating D and a run first team is stablishing a specific path? How is that specific? Every coach in the NFL wants a dominating D and a run first team. His brother Rob sounds like Rex’s echo. They all do!. By overpaying for Scott AND Green (three picks) shows the lack of depth in his planning and how shortsighted the Jets FO has been in team building for the future. And I don’t even want to go in the handling of contracts. Like I said, Rex falls right in step with the path TannWoddy sets.
Pete didn’t BUDDY BOY ask Ray Lewis during his tenure in baltimore if he would like to try the 3-4 base defense? If I remember correctly Ray Lewis protested against the 3-4 base from the 4-3 because it would take away from his game, the liberty of playing his position and what he enjoyed to do. Something BUDDY BOY tells the jets media that “we fit the system into the players not the other way around”. Where is his intuition and backbone there? He should of let his knowledge and ultimately gut feeling take over but he was never really respected by the voice of the baltimore defense. He was there long before Ryan was the defensive coordinator and had any say on the defense. Now the baltimore defense never went through a period of consistently playing the 3-4 defense. Instead they played a version of the 3-4 that enabled them to attack relentlessly.
It does sound weird, right? That charity events, guest speakers, civic functions, and other “TEAM “community contributions does bond a team and creates an identity, respect and appreciation as a whole for it. It etsablishes a personality and value to the team as whole. This does a lot more to build a teams character than a bunch of RAH-RAH, IN YOUR FACE, “WE”LL GET TWO OF YOURS FOR EVERY ONE OF OURS” attitude that last only as long as the first solid punch to the mouth !!
Rex gets the team and the fans fired up!!!!Gotta love that.
Fonzie and Hank why don’t you go pull for the Browns if you miss the Mangina so much.
Our defense and running offense is going to propel us to an 11-5 record or better.
James in TN,
Its going to be a lot of fun watching the dolphins, browns, and jets this year.
Fonzie, you ramble on about what went on between Rex and Ray Lewis, most of which I can’t follow, but please answer this question:
Was Rex a successful D-Coordinator?
The answer to that is more important that whatever point you were trying to make.
Pete57;
My anmswer to that refers to Consistency, right? That is ; TEAM consistency. We all know Ryan has been a very succesdul ” D Coordinator ” The question was to Ryan’s consitency as HC. I think my answer highlights that even as coordinator has not, to this date, or at least reported by anyone, demonstrated the wherewithall, to lead the “TEAM” in a specific path or plan.
He Is totally a one third coach. Nothing, I mean NOTHING, about special teams or the offense other than to say we want sto be an “all weather team” Don’t ALL coaches want “all weather teams?
Pete57:
To be a little more to the point, if all Jet fans think we are going to win the division with only a dominating defense, then we are more dilusional and gullible than I thought.
You need offense, defense and special teams to contribute.
We have not adressed the trenches in any serious way. Tannenboum screwed up the only trully critcal unit to be able to run the ball by releasing Moore. Thank God his family made him come back.
We have not adressed the TE’ depth situation in any serious way.
We have not adressed the WR’s and the special teams in any serious way. Without a wedge we need more speed. What happens if LW doesn’t sign or gets hurt. Who will return for us?
Yeh, I know, we have a young nucleus and always looking to the future while the FO overlooks or screws up the present !
Pete57:
One last thought:
The only thing of some value we have heard the last six months or so this Rah-Rah BS and how we are going to get physical. Althoiugh it creates excitement it paints a bigger bulls eye on the players. It seem as if the Jets fans are sooooo tired of losing that they are eager to see a fight.
This is footall, not boxing, you win by scoring TD’s and FG’s NOT throwing Jabs.
Fonzie, I think the team is doing alot to address all three areas. We can’t get every piece of the puzzle immediately.
For offense we drafted TJ’s replacement in Shonn Green. Very substantial. And we also drafted a franchise QB, even bigger. Also, we drafted an offensive lineman. Three draft picks, all for offense. We haven’t seriously addressed the blocking TE, but I will bet that they will before the season begins. Just as an example, NE has extra blocking TE’s and they won’t carry them all. I wouldn’t be surprised if Chris Baker ends up back on the Jets.
Special teams was in pretty good shape already and they added Larry Izzo, a special teams ace. Coming off injury, Danny Woodhead should also be a nice addition.
The additions to defense you already admit are significant. So, what am I missing?
Also Fonzie, if you don’t like the offensive and special teams moves, please tell us what you would’ve liked to see them do in those areas.
It’s very easy to criticize, but in order for it to have any bite, you need to provide some alternatives to what they have done.
Thirdly, I have a question: What will your reaction be if Ryan turns out to be a great coach, and eventually wins a SB with the Jets? You give the impression that you would not be happy, and try to explain how they won it in spite of Ryan, instead of being ecstatic and celebrating the great achievement like a Jet fan should.
And in anticipation of your question: If Ryan turns out to be bad, I will call for him to be fired, just like I did with Mangini.
Reading this post…Fonzie, you seem to really be missing a lot of what was done this off season. You say they haven’t done certain things but most of what you say is actually arguable. If you didn’t know Leonhard also does kick and punt returns. If it’s about speed they have some other players on the team with some speed. They also signed Larry Izzo pretty much exlusively for what he could bring to special teams. You say that he is not demonstrating any consistancy is ridiculous as the demonstration comes after they have actually played games not just OTAs. Hell, Schottenheimer is still the brains behind what will be the offense of this team and most of these players with a few exceptions have been under his guideance for a while now and should be very much up to speed as they have consistantly been in his systems. What is there about maybe 5 offensive players on this team that are getting their first experience in Schott’s system and maybe 1 of those might be a starter? I’m no rocket scientist but if one of those young WRs steps up and produces it should not surprise anyone since they have been in the system for more than a season now. The Jets don’t do community involvement? To be perfectly honest if you have a computer you can look on the team page and see all of the community involvement they have as a team. http://www.newyorkjets.com/community/article/show/3001-rex-players-bring-jerseys-to-this-part-of-jersey
As far as the TE and the WR situation it’s still a wait and see. Everything can’t be fixed over night but by bringing Bubba Franks back I say they are working on the TE situation and as far as the WR situation goes some of us assume we don’t have the replacement for Coles but as far as I am concerned we may already have that player. We may have some talent that couldn’t get on the field because of tenure. It really is difficult to respond to guys like you Fonzie (and Hank) because you sound more like fans of another team. You shouldn’t be here the way you talk. What this coach has done in my opinion is express confidence in his team and to me that is the greatest thing he could have done for this highly talented team. Blaming Rex Ryan for the hostility you receive going into a division rivals stadium is one of sthe stupidest things I’ve ever heard. Lets break it down. Well before Rex Ryan took over as head coach of the Jets the Jets own some crazy record of wins over the Dolphins…I don’t remember the specific number but I think it might be the Phins have only beat the Jets about 2 times in about the last decade (again my number may be off) but I believe one of the times was when Ricky Williams first signed with them and the other was last season with Pennington playing his second time against the Jets. What that works out to is thePhins fans hate you weather Rex Ryan kisses their butts or not. Beleive in this team cause I think most of us here do and with time they will hopefully give us what we Jets fans want…a championship.
Pete57,
I am just showing my true jet colors like all the jets fans. FIRE BUDDY BOY!!!!!
Hey Pete57,
What do you honestly think our record with BUDDY BOY will be this year?
Forget the Super Bowl. What do you honestly think our record is going to be? I want to bring you down to earth.
Pete57,
I truly think that the front office made a huge mistake by addressing just the offense in this year’s draft without addressing the important players in house on the team first. I am a firm believer that you take care of your own first. This picks at the time were not even signed. I would have liked to see the jets address the OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE TRENCHES BEFORE ADDRESSING QUARTERBACK AND RUNNINGBACK!!! Those positions were already stacked before the draft. You like the rest of the jets front runners wanted more; something exciting and new. So you were in favor of the GOLDEN BOY and college running back pickup. Well, right now there are tough times (pun intended) and there really isn’t any room for failure on this team. The JETS are primed to win NOW!!!! You know this and everyone else knows this.
Fonzie, I think the Jets could win as many as 12 games, and as few as 7. If I had to pick a record I would say 9-7.
Pete57:
If you are right and the Jets finish 9-7, does it not prove my point?
We are going to have the same record as last year. A team with a HC that was fired due to incompetentce.
This years team and this years Manager is supposedly lightyears ahead of last year. What gives?
