by R_in_CT on July 31st, 2009 at 9:29 pm

Hey all –

The rain stopped and it was clear skies for the afternoon session here in Cortland, drawing a bigger and more enthusiastic crowd. The team practiced for about two hours in shells — helmets and shoulder pads with shorts.

Leon to Reporter: “I Have No Confidence in a Deal Getting Done”

by Bent on July 31st, 2009 at 7:18 pm

The headline says it all really. Steve Overmeyer reports via twitter that Leon is not sounding at all confident about his contract situation. Meanwhile, Keels just tweeted that he’s taking a break from work to go equipment shopping for his son’s Pop Warner team.

EDIT: I’m sure you’ll get every beat writer’s version of this story in due course. Lisa Zimmerman tweeted this:

Leon Washington just updated the media on his contract situation. He’s not happy does not think a deal will get done but he’s here. For now.

EDIT 2: Jane McManus goes into more detail on her blog, as Leon reserves his right to hold out at a later date and talks about leverage and not expecting to get anything done this year.

Ugh. Watch this space further developments.

Breakdown of Training Camp Practice

by Bassett on July 31st, 2009 at 4:47 pm

Here’s some quick thoughts from around the web on what happened in practice this morning …

Leon Showed Up — Although he didn’t have a full practice in the morning because of his conditioning test, it’s a good sign that he’s there, and you hope it has to mean that Leon is about to get a new deal.

QB Minor Skirmish — Sounds like it was a fizzler this morning, with both top QBs not playing all that well, but of the two Sanchez looking better. Or course note that Sanchez was working with the twos not the ones … so that has to play into it when you consider he wasn’t dealing with Rhodes and Revis. Still it was a wet morning, so let’s not overreact to one practice.

Sanchez’s didn’t have a great morning and his unit had three false-start penalties. There was an almost pick by Linebacker Marques Murrell which could have been a blown route, it seems and there was another almost pick during practice. Ryan was sparse with the praise for Clemens said he had “good command of the huddle” but not much more … yikes.

Ball Control — Much is being made of Ryan’s “ball control” offense, but sans Brett Favre, that was Mangini’s M.O. too, it just manifest itself more in a West Coast passing attack. Still Ryan hates offensive turnovers, so the beat reporters will be sure to keep tallies of who’s been intercepted how many times … stay tuned.

Cornering the Corners — Revis had two picks in practice, one an underthrown deep ball by Clemens. Ryan had good things to say about Dwight Lowery, who he noted might be nipping at Lito Sheppard’s heels. Expect Sheppard to start, but that he likes Lowery’s game is a good sign. I was a little concerned the signing of Strickland might have meant he was pushing out Lowery.

Big Jinx At It Again — Save it for December! Kris Jenkins impressed the audience by stoning the running backs on the first two plays from scrimmage. It’s great to hear he’s in form, but we want to make sure he doesn’t wear down again this season, the Jets will need him late in the year. Howard Green looked good in drills and Ryan made a point of talking about him, so let’s hope he can provide the needed breather for Jenkins at times.

Gholston Quiet — No real news for Gholston other than that he played behind Pace with the second unit.

Transcripts: Kellen Clemens 7/31/2009

by Bassett on July 31st, 2009 at 4:33 pm

Here’s a transcript of QB Kellen Clemens from the media availability.

On the weather conditions…

At least it wasn’t hot. It was a nice, cool day and easier to stay hydrated. We had a good start this morning and we will come back this afternoon and do the same thing.

On the first practice going the way he wanted it to go…

It kind of went the way that you expect the first practice to go. The rain was a little bit of an issue. We had some balls sail to be honest. But it’s a good opportunity for us because we’re certainly not going to play 16 regular season games without playing one in the rain. It’s a good opportunity early to work on some mechanics. We have a long way to go.

On the defense…

Film Room: WTF Madden

by Bassett on July 31st, 2009 at 4:13 pm

So the other day I joked that Kerry Rhodes needed to step up his web video … err game to catch up with the increasingly out there Chris Cooley. So, I was rather suprised when I saw Kerry’s Twitter account had sent this reply:

@thejetsblog what up now? http://bit.ly/2QdE1 – @thecooleyzone is nice but I can do video 2

And do video 2 he can …

We are not worthy, Kerry Rhodes. We are not worthy …

Transcripts: Bart Scott 7/31/2009

by Bassett on July 31st, 2009 at 3:35 pm

Bart Scott spoke to the media today … here’s some of what he had to say …

On the first practice…

I think you saw guys knocking the rust off, being the first day with pads on. We’re trying to figure out how the practice is going to go, the tempo. I think for the first day it was pretty good fighting through the elements. They don’t cancel football because of rain. It’s just one more thing that will help you get mentally prepared. You are always going to get curveballs when you are playing football.

On making the defense successful… (more…)

Camp Files: A Wet Morning in Cortland

by Bassett on July 31st, 2009 at 3:30 pm

We got our very first reader of the blog (a TJB Informant, if you will) of the 2009 Training Camp to file a report of their take of the practice. Bruce R. a native of Cortland.

The first day of Jets camp was WET! It rained the whole time. However, we die-hard Jets fans braved the elements to watch our team take the field. This is my first Jets camp. I am a life-long native of Cortland and have been a jets fan for 24 years. I was impressed with Mark Sanchez, Bart Scott, Darrelle Revis, and David Harris. Then again being the first day of camp, so what can you expect?

I was extremely pleased to see Leon at camp. However, it seemed like his heart was not into it  [Editor's Note: I imagine that it's because Ryan admitted they held him out because of his conditioning test earlier in the day] I’m sure it is contract related and he should be back to form in no time. I am looking forward to taking photos (in the sunshine) this afternoon and am hoping with the sun the team will be more aggressive with their workouts.

Thanks Bruce! Keep it up! Be sure to send us your thoughts (who looked good? who didn’t?), pictures, videos or whatever to us at thejetsblog@gmail.com or with a #jetscamp tag on Twitter. We’ll make sure to put you in the running for Best Buy Gift Cards if you do.

TJB Interview: Nick Mangold – Part II

by Angel Navedo on July 31st, 2009 at 2:15 pm

The first half of Angel Navedo’s conversation with Nick Mangold revolved around his fascination with all forms of technology. From Blackberry and Apple devices to player ratings in EA Sports’ Madden franchise, the man known in Ohio State as Mangod let you know what’s on his mind when it’s not football.

But with training camp in full swing and the season a little over a month away, Mangold goes into detail about his relationship with his teammates, his appreciation of the minds around him, and his expectations for the offensive line in 2009.

Thomas Jones Breaks Media Silence

by Rich Forestano on July 31st, 2009 at 1:38 pm

RB Thomas Jones broke his media boycott today with Gang Green’s first official training camp practice to commence.  His battering mate, Leon Washington was also in attendance.  Jones is due to make $900,000 this season and (as you know) is unhappy with his contract situation.

“I’m up here for football,” Jones said. “I’m not going to answer any contract questions at all. If it’s football, I’m good with that. Any contract questions, I’m not going to even talk about those.”

Not surprising, considering Jones’ situation is a little different than Washington’s. Jones iterated that he wants to be with his team and doesn’t want his situation to get in the way. Whether or not he stays at camp is another question in itself. (more…)

Training Camp 2009: Morning Images

by R_in_CT on July 31st, 2009 at 1:27 pm

tc_1

Hey all –

Greetings again from what was a very soggy Cortland this morning. I took a bunch of pictures, although I admit right up front that I’m far from an expert, and only after I was done, did I realize that I didn’t really have my camera set right for an overcast and rainy day. Sorry!

Still, there should be enough here to give you an idea of what it was like here this morning, you know, aside from freaking wet. (The forecast is for better weather this afternoon.)

And let me just say the oddest thing about this compared to other camps was the QUIET! No music blaring, so we were able to hear the coaches and players pretty clearly, including when Brian Schottenheimer dropped an F-bomb after a fasle start penalty. Also heard players chirping “Run a lap!” after mistakes, although with Eric Mangini gone, there was no lap running.

Anyway, let’s get on to the images!
