Calvin Pace Suspended Four Games for Dietary Supplement

by Bassett on July 2nd, 2009 at 3:13 pm

Here’s the statements on the news of Calvin Pace’s suspension.

STATEMENT BY AN NFL SPOKESPERSON:

Calvin Pace of the New York Jets has been suspended without pay for the team’s first four regular-season games of 2009 for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances.

Pace’s suspension begins on Saturday, September 5. He is eligible to return to the Jets’ active roster on Monday, October 5 following the team’s October 4 game against the New Orleans Saints.

Pace is eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games.

STATEMENT FROM CALVIN PACE

This is a situation that resulted from an over-the-counter dietary supplement that contained a substance that I did not know violated the League’s policy. I am responsible for what I put into my body and I should have paid closer attention to the League’s guidelines. I regret that this has happened and apologize to my teammates, the entire Jets organization as well as the fans. Hopefully, this does not distract from our ultimate goal of winning the Super Bowl.

STATEMENT FROM THE NEW YORK JETS

We respect the League’s decision and look forward to Calvin’s return for our Monday Night game at Miami.

    Vernon Gholston = starting OLB

    Who’s a bust now?

  2. avatar Clint says:

Who will start in his place? Jaamal Westerman the rookie from rutgers that Ryan praised or Vernon Gholston?

  3. avatar MEL31602 says:

My dad said he got a text from the Jets about this and that he thought it would say they signed Burress but we get this instead. Hopefully Rex is right about Gholston…

  4. avatar vbsiena24 says:

    Mother ****er!

  5. avatar JAY G says:

man that sucks hopefully he can be reinstated. he said he was only taking a diet pill. go GHOLSTON!!!

  6. avatar my pet goat says:

If Westerman starts over VG I think the bust tag will be official.

  7. avatar Clint says:

In a way I want Westerman to play at one of the linebacker postions but I want Gholston to prove people wrong.

  8. avatar MSM says:

We couldnt just have one offseason without the “same old jets” feeling creeping in…. Damn it. Why does something always go wrong with our team? Pace was supposed to be the man ALL season…

Westerman… here we go (Go Rutgers!)

  9. avatar Dylan says:

Wouldn’t be a shocker if Westerman starts, simply because it would cause the least amount of change, Gholston would keep the same role. If Gholston becomes a starter, more roles probably change.

  10. avatar nyckage says:

Oh What the F*#k, I mean can you be any stupider, well at least we can get Gholston on the field without sitting Thomas down for the first 4 games, and if he plays better than Thomas in those 4 games, I guess we can start him over Thmas when Pace comes back.

  11. avatar Joe P says:

Training camp has not started and we are already pathching together a defense. It amazes me that every guy that gets caught has the same old excuse “an over the counter excuse”.

  12. avatar MattNYC says:

He can still participate in camp, correct?

  13. avatar lafflin says:

I don’t think this is a “Same Ol Jets” type of incident at all. These things happen.
Personally, really I like the statement that he gave. He took responsability, he’s not crying foul, and he’s pointed out that it’s not steroids. But what I like most is the swagger. Under Mangini the statement wouldn’t include the superbowl as their ultimate goal. It would likely read something to the effect of “blah blah blah, consistency and trying to get better every day, and not getting too high when we win or too low when we loose”.
I’m so glad I don’t have to listen to that looser attitude anymore, because generally speaking, if you don’t believe you can win then you’re right.

  14. avatar JesusRevis says:

Pace is one of our key defensive players This is a big loss. I know Brandon Marshall was suspended for the first four games last season, but the sentence got reduced to 1. Any possibility of a similar outcome?

  15. avatar subwayfare says:

If Pace knowingly took a banned substance and hoped he’d get away with it, he’s an idiot.

If he took any kind of over the counter supplements without considering the possibility they may contain a non-approved substance, then he’s an idiot.

  16. avatar Matt says:

Hey, at least we know one of our D players won’t get too tired by the end of the season right?

  17. avatar Joe P says:

Who else was he going to hold responsible. Talk is cheap. If you don’t know what you are putting in your body ask someone who knows if it is OK–I am sure the trainers are aware of what is legal and what is not. His actions hurt the whole team—these guys need to grow up.

  18. avatar mole57 says:

Usually, the “over-the-counter supplement” excuse is for a banned substance that is a masking agent.

  19. avatar KrhodesFan says:

hopefully gholston and bryan thomas step up during those 4 games cuz calvin pace was the pne bringing most of the pressure to the qb last year

  20. avatar pkpiazza says:

hopefully he will appeal and get only a one game like marshall last year

  21. avatar Jimbo says:

Paging Vernon Gholston….hope you’re ready to step it up, kid.

  22. avatar 96debacle says:

He deserve a slap in the back of his head for every down he’s going to miss not being smarter than this.

Matter of fact, while your out of it, start slapping Gholston in the back of the head too. Maybe it will start to make him meaner after 40-50 slaps. We’re going to need him even more now!

  23. avatar KrhodesFan says:

btw i find it absolutely hillarious that he brought up the super bowl in this situation

  24. avatar Doug in Long Valley says:

    Brilliant, simply brilliant

I heard this on the radio just as I passed the new stadium coming out of Manhattan, I almost drove off the road

  25. avatar jetfanATL says:

Inexcusable….. These guys all know the penalty for violating the policy. How hard is it to call up the trainer and say “hey, I was thinking of taking this or that supplement and wanted to make sure it’s legit before I risk a 4 game suspension”? Then again, we also wonder why multi-millionaires w/money to burn can’t afford rides home when they are high or drunk. Just wish they would act like they are accountable for their actions. I didn’t realize it was banned is the lamest excuse there is…

  26. avatar SackDance99 says:

Well, I knew we were going to get a sour note sooner or later on what has been a positive and optimistic off-season. I guess everyone has forgotten that Marques Murrell was Pace’s back up last year. It’s the M&M boys on the right side: the Marqueses, Douglas and Murrell.

  27. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

Just Wonderful!! Lets hope he wasn’t using what Manny was using, ’cause you need a big pair to play in the NFL.

  28. avatar The Green Lantern #80 says:

    Permission To Curse Bent? DAMN!

  29. avatar hank/naples says:

I agree with the steroid policy in principle but not in general.

I believe it is completely absurd that the NFL weilds sooo much power over the individual that it can deprive of a players right of income to support himself or his family simply by taking a completely legal, apparently harmless over the counter health supplement that contains one of possible dozens of obscure ingredients that the NFL FEELS can be an aide to the athletes performance.

There should be an independent medical body to investigate the substance, effect, intent, nutrirional value, harm and overall effect on performance and the athletes history.

Only the football Czar (Goodell) has so much absolute power of all the sports to discipline, fine, suspend, or ban its platers.

  30. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

Sorry Green Lantern – looks like we’ll hafta wait a little while longer…

I remember Pace slipping in coverage in the 1st Pats game I think. Its cool though he is a good Linebacker that I can’t wait to see in Rex’s system.

    Another Dummy!!!!

  32. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

I can’t wait to hear how fonzie will blame the FO for THIS ONE !

    :-)

  33. avatar me says:

    HERE WE GO..THIS BLOWS

  34. avatar Bent says:

“He can still participate in camp, correct?”

    Correct.

  35. avatar Bent says:

…and he doesn’t use up a roster spot while on the suspended list before anyone asks.

  36. avatar Joe B. says:

Great, we have what looks like our best defense in years and our best pass rusher gets himself suspended until Week 5. Only us.

Ghostman had better make some kind of impact during that time.

  37. avatar Bent says:

Unrealistic expectations on Gholston? Had he not come out early, this would be his rookie year. I’m hoping for a few flashes in the first half of the season and for him to come on stronger in the second half.

I expect they’ll move to more of a 4-3 base with Ellis and BT at the primary ends and Douglas, Devito, Pouha and/or Green splitting reps with Jenkins on the interior. BT at 4-3 end isn’t ideal but it’s preferable to someone with no experience and they will still of course mix it up with the 3-4 and 46 packages.

  38. avatar JetOrange says:

Forget Gholston , the man is Marques Murrell

  39. avatar Lou says:

The NFL should just create Their own supplement shop that way no players have to worry about banned substances. The multitude of supplements is astronomical. I also think the amount of banned substances is pretty high also.

  40. avatar The Green Lantern #80 says:

    BubbyBrister/shovelpass- ughhhh
    Do Pre-season games Count? lol

  41. avatar JEFFDOLINI says:

What an idiot, our best outside linebacker won’t be there for the first 4 games. I hate this crap!

  42. avatar James in TN says:

Talk about irony, when the dude who uses steroids doesn’t get busted (VG), and the dude who doesn’t use them does(CP) gets 4 games off. Bad Omens I tell you.

  43. avatar Harvlis says:

This is not what we wanted to hear but, if the team has no depth, they are going nowhere anyway. This will force Pace’s back-up to perform at a higher level and, when Pace comes back, we will be that much deeper. Who know’s, maybe we find out that Murrell or Gholston can play. Thank god, it wasn’t an O-Lineman. Then, we really would have been in trouble.

  44. avatar Bent says:

“if the team has no depth, they are going nowhere anyway.”

Exactly. Pace won’t be the only starter that’s unavailable for a period of time and this team will hopefully be equipped to cope anyway.

  45. avatar Avenir labs says:

its really a shameful for Calvin Pace and it muet effect their goals .

  46. avatar Lonnie G says:

    Vernon, this is your time!!

  47. avatar Reprocity says:

Isn’t Ellis also suspended for a game or two?

I’d love to see Murrell and Trunsik on the field at the same time… That’s a lot mottor!
