Calvin Pace Trying to Explain
Calvin Pace has put up a post on his Yardbarker blog, and in which he essentially says the same thing as his statement to the NFL, but in which he does a little more explaining.
I’m sure you’ll hear this news eventually, and I’d rather you hear it from me first. I have been suspended for four games by the NFL due to my mistakenly ingesting a banned substance. I apologize to my family, the jets organization, my teammates, fans and friends. This situation occurred purely by accident and was in absolutely no way a result of my trying to cheat the system put in place by the NFL. However, as a man and a public figure I am aware that I must take full responsibility for everything I do. I also know that it’s just as important to learn from my mistakes and help others avoid them in any way that I can. In the future, I will be more proactive in knowing what substances are banned and EXACTLY what is in everything I put into my body. I truly hope that my mistake does not bring unwanted distractions to my teammates and our ultimate goal of being a championship team. I also hope that you, my fans, will forgive this accidental indiscretion.
It’s clear he’s taking this as head-on as his agent, lawyer, whatever will allow. I do want to think that it was more about just not knowing what he got from GNC, but he’s not saying what it is, so it’s hard to really know. Still, more than anything I’m disappointed because I wanted to see him knock Brady around Week 2.

It’s very important for me to understand what Calvin took . I want to know if Calvin is a Knucklehead, a cheater, an abuser or a victim. Revealing the supplement would give us all an insight into the NFL policy.
It’s good to see that hes taking an honest approach, i couldnt care less what it was that he took as long as its LEGAL. But the fact remains that the team (and the player) need to CHECK what the supplements that are out on the market and make a list of stuff they can and cant take. NOT SIMPLE ENOUGH?
over the counter……..in Mexico
The NFL publishes a list of banned OTC substances. One has to seriously question the intelligence of Calvin Pace for taking one of the substances.
What a dummy!!
He wants to “help others to avoid the same mistakes he made”.Wouldnt it help to name the product he ingested then?
Enough of this accidentally taking banned substances already.Every organization should have their own supplements regulated and distributed to their players when requested.Problem solved. In fact I would be surprized if this isnt already the case.
It seems like the dude was cheating (steroids) and is using the fact that the substance itself hasn’t been revealed to his benefit.
Until they tell us that it was efedra or something, i classify him as a cheater who i’d prefer not to be on the team.
They all take steroids, why are we only suspending a handful of them?
These athletes choose to do what they do. They are punishing themselves enough, what is the point of giving them 4-game suspensions? The only ones that suffer are the fans.
The NFL is going the wrong way ever since Goodell took over.
90% of the supplements sold at GNC are on the banned list. If he took an over the counter supplement and got suspended….then he is an idiot…
If he took a banned steriod he is a bigger idiot. These guys have access to HGH and things that are not detectable by the NFL. I am not saying he should be taking those but if he got caught using steriods ala S Merriman he is retarted!!
I assumed he when to GNC for a pre or post workout supplement and failed a test do to that…..
Either way Pace is a jackass and Gholsten just lost his baby steps and has to become a big boy day 1 in 2009!!
“In the future, I will be more proactive in knowing what substances are banned and EXACTLY what is in everything I put into my body.”
Ummm, that concept kicked in the moment he signed the mega-stupid contract…which of his agents or FO people forgot to tell Calvin that?
And, yes, this IS VG’s big opportunity. Let’s see if he flops, or stakes a claim to Calvin’s job…
Bent:
I feel like I am sending up the Bat Signal… there is only one man , Actually two (Jason) that can answer this question. We know that Calvins primary compensation at this time is the Roster Bonus that he has already received. Pace will lose 4 game checks. Do the Jets have any recourse to claim a Pro Rata share of the Bonus that they have already paid Mr. Pace ? And if they reclaim is there any positive implications to the cap ?
And just as important , would they ? Do we know who Calvins agent is ?
JetOrange – His agent is Pat Dye, who I don’t know a lot about. (Like referees, that’s a good thing.)
The contractual terms behind a roster bonus are pretty much set in stone – if you’re on the roster at the relevant date, you’re entitled to that money. I don’t think there’s any way for guaranteed money to be recovered, which is why Mike Vick had a big cap hit in 2008. Both the Falcons and Giants (re: Plax) tried to recover roster bonuses last year, but a federal judge ruled that this contravened the CBA.
The only way I can see there being a saving is if any of the sums reported as “guaranteed” were actually contigent on something like this not happening, but I doubt it. It is possible that there are incentives that he will miss out on though, so it may mean a saving overall when compared to the maximum value of his contract.
I understand Jason has full details of the contract, so he may be able to give you a more specific response, but I don’t think this will affect the cap, other to reduce it by than the proportion of his base salary that won’t now be paid.
I’m gald I sent up the “Bent Signal”
An outstanding response as usual, Thanks
I got VG falling on his face and Someone else emerging to fill the void, any takers?
Damn you Pace!
James – I said yesterday that I never expected Gholston to be ready to start at the beginning of what should have been his rookie season (because he came out early, but last year was a bit of a waste for him anyway). I hoped to see him flash now and again over the first half of the season and perhaps contribute over the second half.
So, in essence, I am with you, although I wouldn’t view it as “falling on his face” if he failed to win the starting job on opening day. I’m sure the media and many fans will see it that way though, so it will be interesting to see how he responds if we’re right.
As to who fills the void, the reps Pace will have to be shared as follows, but who will be the “starter” is anyone’s guess. Someone unexpected will need to step up but at least they have options:
1. Direct replacement: Gholston, Murrell, Westerman
2. 4-man front with Ellis and BT at DE and Douglas at DT: Trusnik, Cummings, Renkart, Izzo as the 3rd LB (the same personnel could probably run the 46 package)
3. Ellis slides over to rush LB as was tried in 2007 and they add a guy to the line: DeVito, Green, Pouha (again, the same personnel could probably run the 46 package)
4. Running out of a package with 5 DBs and bringing an extra safety into the box: Smith, Fitzhugh, Cook, Lowery, Strickland.
Heck, if we run all these, we won’t even notice Pace is gone.
Or…maybe they sign a veteran stand-in.
It just potentially hurts us so damn much. Would be great if someone can step up but he’s such a key, difficult player to replace on the D. Sucks to lose any starter.
With all the movement, all the fronts and all the packages and agressiveness expected by our attacking D, I don’t see how Ryan can’t make up (disguise) the difference calvin makes in 4 games.
If our D is soo dependent on ONE (1) guy, then we better question our overall expectations!!!
i FINALLY agree w fonzie
