With all the movement, all the fronts and all the packages and agressiveness expected by our attacking D, I don't see how Ryan can't make up (disguise) the difference calvin makes in 4 games.

If our D is soo dependent on ONE (1) guy, then we better question our overall expectations!!!

It just potentially hurts us so damn much. Would be great if someone can step up but he's such a key, difficult player to replace on the D. Sucks to lose any starter.

James - I said yesterday that I never expected Gholston to be ready to start at the beginning of what should have been his rookie season (because he came out early, but last year was a bit of a waste for him anyway). I hoped to see him flash now and again over the first half of the season and perhaps contribute over the second half.

So, in essence, I am with you, although I wouldn't view it as "falling on his face" if he failed to win the starting job on opening day. I'm sure the media and many fans will see it that way though, so it will be interesting to see how he responds if we're right.

As to who fills the void, the reps Pace will have to be shared as follows, but who will be the "starter" is anyone's guess. Someone unexpected will need to step up but at least they have options:

1. Direct replacement: Gholston, Murrell, Westerman

2. 4-man front with Ellis and BT at DE and Douglas at DT: Trusnik, Cummings, Renkart, Izzo as the 3rd LB (the same personnel could probably run the 46 package)

3. Ellis slides over to rush LB as was tried in 2007 and they add a guy to the line: DeVito, Green, Pouha (again, the same personnel could probably run the 46 package)

4. Running out of a package with 5 DBs and bringing an extra safety into the box: Smith, Fitzhugh, Cook, Lowery, Strickland.

Heck, if we run all these, we won't even notice Pace is gone.

Or...maybe they sign a veteran stand-in.

JetOrange - His agent is Pat Dye, who I don't know a lot about. (Like referees, that's a good thing.)

The contractual terms behind a roster bonus are pretty much set in stone - if you're on the roster at the relevant date, you're entitled to that money. I don't think there's any way for guaranteed money to be recovered, which is why Mike Vick had a big cap hit in 2008. Both the Falcons and Giants (re: Plax) tried to recover roster bonuses last year, but a federal judge ruled that this contravened the CBA.

The only way I can see there being a saving is if any of the sums reported as "guaranteed" were actually contigent on something like this not happening, but I doubt it. It is possible that there are incentives that he will miss out on though, so it may mean a saving overall when compared to the maximum value of his contract.

I understand Jason has full details of the contract, so he may be able to give you a more specific response, but I don't think this will affect the cap, other to reduce it by than the proportion of his base salary that won't now be paid.

Bent:

I feel like I am sending up the Bat Signal... there is only one man , Actually two (Jason) that can answer this question. We know that Calvins primary compensation at this time is the Roster Bonus that he has already received. Pace will lose 4 game checks. Do the Jets have any recourse to claim a Pro Rata share of the Bonus that they have already paid Mr. Pace ? And if they reclaim is there any positive implications to the cap ?
And just as important , would they ? Do we know who Calvins agent is ?

"In the future, I will be more proactive in knowing what substances are banned and EXACTLY what is in everything I put into my body."

Ummm, that concept kicked in the moment he signed the mega-stupid contract...which of his agents or FO people forgot to tell Calvin that?

And, yes, this IS VG's big opportunity. Let's see if he flops, or stakes a claim to Calvin's job...
