Fresh off the Waiver Wire
Andrew Davie who was signed by the Jets as a UDFA in April was recently cut by New York and has been taken by the Carolina Panthers. Obviously the Jets didn’t see much in Davie that was worth adding him to the depth chart. The [Charlotte] Observer continues to point out that Carolina has three TE’s already and it looks like Davie will only be the ”help” in training camp.
Dustin Keller is definitely going to be the go to guy but there is still pressure for him to get up to speed on his blocking skills. Bubba Franks is helpful with blocking and catching a few passes here and there but only when healthy and currently Franks is still recovering from last season’s injury. No question the Jets need more depth at tight end although I know this is not a top priority, it could be a problem in the long run. Hopefully some of the other rookies such as J’Nathan Bullock will prove their worth and silence the issue.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jets had two TE’s on their Practice squad. Bullock the basketball player out of of Cleveland State is the only true backup to Keller, I would hope he shows enough for PS. Jack Simmons Is the most complete TE, played extensively at Minnesota has looked great in OTA’s, the question on both these guys is inline blocking. Bubba would be perfect, gives you a veteran presence, bur he looked done last year, even taking 15-20 snaps a game, can’t see him making it through 16 games. I’m overly optimistic on Kareem Brown, his role as a TE is extremely limited, 4 catches for 24 yards would be outstanding, but he knocks the snot out of Linebackers, especially those 3-4 sack artists., plays all special teams, and rotates in the DL for 6-8 plays a game. All this being said , watch the waiver wire
Whats wrong with the Jets ? Why do I have to find out from the Charlotte Observer that a Jet has been cut a couple of days ago ?
Is the jet staff on furlough this week ?
Please with Bubba Franks. Less than useless at this point in his career.
Again , I like to have a veteran presence when you have a young QB. Bubba was a nice Redzone target a few years a go, but Green Bay said he was washed up, and he did nothing to disprove that with his short tenure with the Jets. If Franks looks good in training camp, I think we give him the Hank Poteat treatment.
That is you cut Bubba on the final Cut down day , let him clear waivers and then pick him up before the first game. The purpose of this manuaver is keep the jets off the hook for his entire years salary, you wind paying him week to week…
If you take a utility Tight end that has the ability to block and catch and perhaps use him in the H-Back position you have nore than satsified a complement to Keller. I think watching the Big 10 last year that Simmons is an equally good blocker as he is reciever. He certanily can catch; although uner the Gopher system the QB could not check off recievers and was focused on 1 primary reciever. Leaving Simmons obtaiining those reception STATS strictly on his own; although the good news is that made him a very good bloker . Rarely missing blocking assignments.. I think perhaps the Jets scouts might look like geniuses on this one. Watch film on him.. The blocking is there…
