Buzz: Sign McGinest?

There’s been a lot of talk about Vernon Golston and Co. stepping in for the suspended Calvin Pace, but is there an option outside the organization the Jets should consider? Adam Schefter thinks so… but Mike Florio shoots it down.

Schefter posted on Thursday, after news broke that Jets linebacker Calvin Pace will miss the first four games of the 2009 season for unintentionally cheating, that the Jets might be interested in adding linebacker Willie McGinest to the roster during Pace’s suspension.

The only problem with this strategy is that, because McGinest is a vested veteran, he’d be entitled to receive his full salary as termination pay, if he’s on the opening-day roster and if he’s cut after Pace returns.

The financial implications seem to rule it out, but it’s still an interesting option. Could Willie make an impact, at least in the short term in conjunction with some of those younger guys? And who says he has to be cut? I know the Jets are “deep” at LB, but there’s very little proven depth. Food for thought. And what’s the problem with bringing him to camp? Oh, well, he might go north instead.

  1. I’m all for it i haven’t heard good things about VG so far and it’s critical to any team to get off to a good start. I am sick of losing to the damn patsies at home every year

  2. Sweetin’ the rivalry even without Man-idiot. A veteran/experienced presence like Willie is always welcomed on a team I root for. I hate how everyone touts about this, but, maybe Gholston can learn from an experienced player like Willie.

  3. get him now

  4. if he ‘dresses’ and the uniform isnt sagging off him, sign him.

  5. yea sign him for the year we could use the depth and the experience!!! but not for alot of $$$ maybe 1 or 2 million if that remember he is old!!!

  6. If we could sign the McGinest of even three or four years ago, or preferably more, that would be great. The current aging edition…. Not.

If we are looking for the long haul, we need to decide what to do about the players we got.

Pace’s idiocy opens up PT for Murrell, Westerman and maybe even Vernon (does having a name like Vernon require one to be a disappointment, or only if taken with the sixth pick?). Are these keepers or just teases with nice stories.

Next year may be an uncapped year which would allow any NFL team to cut a high draft pick and not suffer from cap impacts. I want VG to have every opportunity to play or get beat out by an undrafted FA.

So, I say, play the games with the hand we picked and see who should stick and who should leave. We are unlikely to win it all this year anyway with the Pats and Brady back.

No more aging has been vets.

Incorrect. If a player is cut during an uncapped year, the accelerated cap hit is charged against the cap in the next capped year.
