If I promise that this will be the last Brett Favre article I write* (see bottom of article) will you guys promise to douse the fire and put down the pitch forks? When I read this story on Bleacher Report, I couldn’t help but nearly fall out of my chair. The belief here is that the addition of Favre ”legitimizes the Vikings.”
… one may be inclined to ask how a 39 year old quarterback could legitimize an NFL team, especially considering that same 39 year old quarterback failed legitimize another team the prior year … Favre’s transition may be a bit easier.
The Jets attempted to ride Favre down the stretch in 2008, but should Favre begin to stumble in Minnesota, [Adrian] Peterson is more than capable of carrying that team down the stretch.
The Vikings already have one of the league’s best defenses, best offensive lines, and best running backs. It isn’t so much a matter of Favre being a stellar player that pushes Minnesota over the top, it’s the simple fact that the Vikings have everything in place except a quarterback.
It is a good question as to whether or not Favre does give the VikQueens some leg to stand on but I’m not liking how Mike Florio-ish it is. I know, I know, I’m a jerk for bringing around the Favre story again but you got to wonder if the Vikings would actually do better with Favre than the Jets did last season which for the record would really be a huge kick in the face to the Jets and fans who shelled out $80 or more for Favre jerseys.
*references can be made to the cow wrangler though.

I actually agree with the author on this. I thought Minny was the perfect spot for Favre LAST season for the same reasons: they have Super Bowl talent on the two lines, and absolutely no QB to speak of. The Jets were/are much farther away, and Favre made no sense for us (I said so at the time). If healthy, I definitely see Favre helping the Vikings a lot this year. They’ll still be prone to his horrible decision-making, but their defense will be able to withstand it much better than ours.

One of the league’s best offensive lines, check. One of the league’s best defenses, check. One of the league’s best running games, check. Are we sure they’re not talking about Favre and the ’08 Jets?

Just wait and see what this guy says after a season (or however long they give him) of Favre tossing the ball up into triple coverage. He will be singing a different tune. As a Jet fan…been there, done that.

When the Jets got Favre, my biggest fear was that he’d fade down the stretch like he did the previous year. Sure enough, he did, but injury-free there’s no reason he can’t “legitimize the Vikings”. However, he will probably wither in the winter again and is on a team where Adrian Peterson has already proven that his durability can be a problem, so he might not be firing on all cylinders in the postseason either. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see them reach the playoffs, but I’d definitely bet against them in the postseason.
I believed all along Favre was capable of having a decent season in 2009, but for the Jets, with a new regime, limited cap space and a fanbase needing to see hope for the future, it was an absolute no-brainer to get rid of him.
He’s a non-factor now for the Jets, doesn’t even warrant discussion.
