Link: No Such Thing as Time Off

nastyshake.jpgThere’s no offseason in the NFL and Jane McManus of the Journal News writes about what some the currently rostered Jets are doing while on their six week break before camp. Mike DeVito is spending time with family on Cape Cod while working out in the mornings, Bart Scott has his regimen down but enjoying time with his kids and Dustin Keller is working out in Tampa for the next few weeks. Witness his nasty shake to the right — although I hope that’s not his tin of Copenhagen.

“If you come in extra out of shape, you have to work extra hard,” Keller said.

That’s particularly true for players such as Bart Scott. It’s not easy to have a long career in the NFL, and the 28-year-old Scott says if you want to try, doing right by your body during these weeks is crucial.

“I never vacation on my six weeks,” Scott said. “That’s when I put my body through what I think it needs for a long season.”

Scott works with his trainer of seven years, Chris Endlich, and varies the routine with hill running and boxing. The linebacker got his start as an undrafted free agent with Baltimore, so he always has felt he must work out especially hard before training camp starts.

“You can get away with stuff when you’re younger,” Scott said. “But if you set that routine when you’re young, it’s easy. As opposed to living wild and partying, saying, ‘I’m young. I don’t need to go to the chiropractor. I don’t need to get a massage. I don’t need to get in the cold tub.’ “

It’s good to see that guys like Keller are doing their best to stay in shape. For rookies, there’s often a drag at the end of the season for many, as they’re just not used to playing in so many games compared to their collegiate schedule. Keller knows that the team is going to need both a legitimate blocker and a pass catcher, and it seems he’s doing his best to be in the best shape of his life for the season.

  1. It looks like cooked, frothy, mountain dew

  2. A lot of these TJB stories (Keller, Scott, Leonhard) are being billed as players saying all the right things. I guess that’s good – to a point.

    Just win, OK?

  3. Devito has been working out 3 times a day every day since being on break. He is going back to camp on Wed July 26th. He looks real big right now and his head is in the right place. Watch out for him this year!!!!
