Aaugh, the Pressure

Sanchez v. Stafford

Is Michigan [Matt Stafford] or New York [Mark Sanchez] under more pressure? To me it seems both quarterbacks are neck and neck having a lot to prove in their respective cities. But there is general agreement on Sanchez from Marcellus Wiley, Mike Golic and Kevin Seifert because of the “win now” attitude that owner Woody Johnson has so long maintained. In an article co-written with Tim Graham, Seifert and Graham came up with a list of each situation the young rookies face.

The NFC North’s Kevin Seifert and AFC East’s Tim Graham considered the issue from a number of perspectives, including:

  • The 2009 expectations for each team. (Detroit: Win some games. New York: Win some playoff games.)
  • The contracts each player signed. (Stafford: Biggest in draft history. Sanchez: Biggest in Jets draft history.)
  • Each team’s alternatives at quarterback. (Detroit: Daunte Culpepper. New York: Kellen Clemens.)
  • The urgency for each player to start right away. (Stafford: Moderate. Sanchez: Mandatory.)

No doubt Sanchez will see the most pressure, I just hope he’ll be able to handle it. He has guys like Chad Pennington trying to get on magazine covers after making appearences of his own so Mark has made some progress, hasn’t he?

You got to wonder if these guys feel like Charlie Brown trying to hit the football only to have it pulled away? I know I would.

  1. Yea Definitely Sanchez because Mark’s expectations is to win Playoff games like you said and Matt Staffords expectations is Two or three wins.

  2. Sanchez because his stock went waaaaaay up during the week leading up to the draft to the point where the jets traded all the way up to 5th from 17 to get him. Now I have faith in Sanchez and i really like the way he presents and carries himself, but us jet fans have high hopes for him. We spent a 5th pick and traded up for him,so he better perform. It doesn’t have to be immediate, but he has to be the franchise quarterback that we haven’t had in 40 years.

  3. Stafford can win 4 games, and they’ll have a parade for him in detroit.
If sanchez doesnt have this team in the playoff race late in the year, he’s going to hear it from the jets fans.

  4. Well you gotta look at 08 to see where the pressure is coming, forget spot taken, forget contract forget the city. It comes down to this: after defeating the titans the Jets were still in contention for top seed in conference, the lions meanwhile were already eliminated from the playoffs and sitting at around 0-9.

The lions were only a QB away from…actually just winning a game nothing more.

  5. i wouldnt say it is MANDATORY that Sanchez starts RIGHT away. May the best QUARTERBACK win.
