MSM,

I actually think Urrutia has a lot more to prove than Matt Jones, who was a first round pick and got first round money. Urrutia as a freshman and sophomore at Louisville looked like a certain first-rounder. Then, he got injured, left early and was a 7th round pick in the 2008 draft. The Jets really present him with, maybe, his last and best shot to make it in the NFL. If not, he's a 6-6 guy with no college degree and no job. That's motivation.

I guess if the Jets can sign Jones for the NFL minimum, I wouldn't be against it. But, any significant amount of cap space wasted on this guy would be a colossal mistake.

Matt Jones is a no brainer...

You cant sign Urrutia and not sign Matt Jones now that he's available. Hes obviously got more to prove than a guy like Urrutia after at one point being considered the #1 Jags receiver.

Sackdance...

No one is saying he will be inserted as our 1 receiver... but there is no question we need to see what he can do. You cant argue against giving him a shot because we are already doing that with every other guy on your list.

Bent...

Im sure theyd love to avoid the hassles of camp, but in a weird weird way, football might be the exact "distraction" a guy like Matt Jones wants during the summer. He is being closely watched after coming out of the substance abuse program. Free time might not be what hes looking for... that just leads to trouble. I remember Ricky Williams once saying that he was tempted to smoke during a Dolphins bye week, which is why he was excited to have a game so he didn't have the down time to think about it.

Oh yeah;

Its a cost-benefit relationship. Jones will be cheap and a short commitment to fill a spot. We can draft a better guy next year :)

Im not calling him the next coming of T.O. but hes better than what we got and a perfect compliment to Cotch with clowney or Stucky in the slot.

Usian Bolt i can almost guarantee either blood-doper or HGH.

vinny,

Bubba may be a has been, but Matt Jones is a never was. Bubba did make the Pro Bowl and has been one of the NFL's most effective redzone threats. Matt Jones is tall and fast...so let's offer Usain Bolt a contract...he's as tall, faster and doesn't have a drug issue. Maybe he can get off the LOS quicker and run better routes, too.

Ugh

Who?
Who?
Who?
Who?
and
Who?

These guys suck. Matt Jones may not be plax, but hes not suspended anymore and hes 6'6" and has played PRO football as a STARTER.

He doesnt have a DRUG PROBLEM, he has a problem GETTING CAUGHT WITH DRUGS ON HIM. Which is dumb in any event i agree. But worth a shot, 1 year contract.

Brad Smith-6-2
Britt Davis-6-3
Mario Urrutia-6-6
Marcus Henry-6-4
Bubba Franks-6-6

Plenty of big redzone/short yardage targets. Is Matt Jones such a bona fide NFL WR that he would instantly start? From what I saw, Jones, who was a QB in college, was still a work in progress with questionable hands, poor route running skills and can't get off the LOS in press coverage. And, his work ethic is questionable. Not what you would expect from a 5-year pro. Of course, I haven't even mentioned his drug problems. The training camp cut lists might have more attractive options and Plax, who is a bona fide NFL no. 1 WR, still might be an attractive option if his legal/NFL issues work out. Let's puff, puff, pass on Matt Jones.

I wonder if the likes of Jones and Plax (moreso Plax, if available) would prefer to sign closer to the end of preseason, so they don't have to endure training camp?

Can we go ahead and give Matt Jones a shot now?

Lets get this out of the way before camp starts. The guy is HUGE. He will be drug tested all year so unless he is retarded (which he might be), there shouldn't be any problems. Give him a shot... it wont cost much. We need to expand Sanchez's room for error, don't force a rookie to throw a perfect ball every time, give him a big target.
