Link: Dustin Keller Breakout Player
The AFC East Blog had a list of breakout players, and second year Tight End Dustin Keller made the list.
Whoever plays quarterback for the Jets this year will be looking for Keller not only because he’s talented, but also because the options appear limited.
Jerricho Cotchery is the top receiver coming back with 71 receptions and 858 yards. But Laveranues Coles is gone, and the rest of the receiving corps is unproven at best.
It’s a fair point, but one that’s boiled down. For more on the subject see our tweetmailbag. I think that the Jets corps of receivers can fill the gap, and with less balls thrown their way, it’s going to be less important to have two players catch 80 balls each. Keller and Washington are best positioned to see their catch totals rise dramatically.

Gosh, I hope so. I hope he becomes that in the seam weapon we sorely need to keep linebackers and safeties honest.
If Keller and Leon become part of a more balanced passing attack, instead of the WR-centric attack that the Jets have had for most of this decade, that would be a good thing and easier on a young QB.
I don’t mean to suggest a direct comparison, but Antonio Gates has led the Chargers in receiving the last several years, with Tomlinson often 2nd in receptions. Guys like Vincent Jackson, Eric Parker, Keenan McCardell and Chris Chambers filled the WR slots. From ‘06 to ‘08 the Chargers ranked 1, 5, and 2 in points scored. Only Jackson caught more than 50 balls for more than 700 yards in a season during those years (once, last year, with 59 and 1058) So, it doesn’t seem really hard to believe the Jets can have a good offense without having two great receivers as long as they get good production from Keller and Washington. All of this is assuing we get decent QB play.
I personally believe that the rest of the NFL is in for a rude awakening because Dustin Keller is going to be a super star.
DaveTN, thats a good point and a reasonable comparison. The only difference is the Chargers have an elite QB in Rivers, something we can hope to eventually have in Sanchez but as of right now we dont have that. Keller hasnt proved yet he can be as good as Gates although I think he definitely can. Our backfield is comparable to San Diegos, I would say its better. The WR’s are comparable as well, although I think Chris Chambers is a better player than Cotchery.

Great post!
i have to agree with you jesusrevis, the NFL is in for a rude a
wakening. Keller is gona be the
man . He probably should of been used more last year . With keller, the jets should have a decent offense. Just like the jetsm what happened to Keller the last 6 games last year ? I guess im still bitter about the end of last season! I just hope brian dont do what he did to Leon and thats forget who our playmakers are! Why dont the jets get a big reciever ? I love catchery and think with the right qb he can show his true talent like he did in college with Rivers . Who knows , maybe Clowneys a stud ? Maybe Chansis our Santana Moss ? Who knows ! I do know our defense will be SICK!
