WR/TE Rankings: Jets don’t rate

FoxSports.com has been going position by position, breaking down and rating individual units in the NFL. Well, this time they decided to tackle WR/TE groupings and needless to say, they were not impressed with the Jets’ grouping.

25. New York Jets: This is a big transition year for the Jets at wideout, with long-time leader Laveranues Coles taking flight to Cincinnati via free agency. That means Jerricho Cotchery, one of Brett Favre’s favorite targets last season, is now the lead dog. Can he handle it? Can Chansi Stuckey or Brad Smith emerge opposite Cotchery? That’s certainly no given. The Jets do have an excellent young tight end in Dustin Keller, who may end up leading this team in catches if Stuckey and Smith can’t keep double coverage away from Cotchery.

Now, the Jets’ wideout problem has been covered ad nauseum, both here and elsewhere (too much to link to, in fact). We get it. Outside of Jerricho Cotchery and one year of Dustin Keller, no one knows what they have or what to expect. The points they make are totally fair and the praise thrown to Keller is fair. But, as Bassett pointed out, Coles has not been the unit leader for at least one year, maybe two.

To rank one-weapon teams like the Browns and Chiefs and grab-bag teams like the 49ers and Ravens ahead of the Jets, I take issue with. I’d take Keller over all of those team’s TEs and none of their #2 WRs have proven anything more than the Jets’ supporting cast. Add in to that the fact that the Ravens and Niners are based around aging vets on their final legs (Derrick Mason and Isaac Bruce), and I’m a little bit insulted. But then again, these are the same people who don’t think Darrelle Revis is one of the 99 best players in the league; take it for what it’s worth.

  1. One of the things that has not brought up, is that we have Leon. The Jets need to be an outstanding Screen team, IMO Washington has to develop a role like Westbrook with the Eagles. I can see Cotchery , Keller, and Washington being your leading receivers. IMO Stuckey is 80% of Coles without the concussion risk, and he is my fourth option.

  2. the titans had much worse wrs last year, too, and they had a nice season.

  3. Good point Jonathan. And guys like that are the ones that put Donovan McNabb ahead of Peyton Manning, made Tom Brady a non-factor in the draft and said said Leon Washington wasn’t worth drafting. Take them with a big grain of salt.

  4. Guys its FOX!! What else do you expect.

  5. Actually, I’m glad that we don’t have Coles. He’s on the downside of his career. Of course, Tannenbaum is going to say that he feels confident with the receiving corps they have, but no one should believe it. I’ve got to think he’s playin’ the brakes until Plaxico’s future is more certain and should be working towards signing Matt Jones. What’s going on with him?

  6. Coles was way overated . We have wr’s. On the roster that would start on any team without question. let’s see what what they’ve got.

  7. “losing” Laveranues Coles was the best thing that happened to us. As far as saying that REVIS isnt one of the 99 best is absolutely RIDICULOUS!
