Link: Preparation Time

The groundscrew at SUNY Cortland has been logging a lot of overtime hours over the past few months in plans to get ready for the Jets arrival later this month.

14 hour work days all to get this field ready for the New York Jets.

The teams lands on campus later this month.

“It was stressful obviously for the first couple weeks because you’re taking something and basically destroying it in order to bring it back that much stronger,” said Blake Hoerr, Jets Director of Fields and Grounds.

The grass had to be stripped and resodded to handle some of the best athletes in the world starting July 31st.

“Get it germinated at the quickest time that we possibly could … as well as getting it to harden off to leave issue so that it doesn’t fall apart as soon as they get on the field,” Hoerr said.

I hope this is me being nervous over nothing, but it brings an interesting question. Since these are new facilities by the team, it’s worth keeping an eye on the numbers of injuries that the team faces this summer in camp on the largely untested turf. Again, I hope it’s nothing, but worth keeping an eye out.

  1. Thanks for “planting the seed” of players getting injured on crappy turf this summer…(no pun intended…well, maybe a little.. actually, i apologize for that)

I’m trying, but failing to remember how injured the Jets were during those years when Giants Stadium went to all grass.. remember that horrible experiment?

  2. If you’re worried about “bad grass” I think you’re over-thinking things. During camp injuries can, (and probably will), happen. But it’s far fetched to think a grass surface will be the reason.

  3. I’m less worried about the grass than I am about Rex Ryan setting up the drills so that our players run into one another.
