Audible: What’s Your Camp Battle?
Posted on July 17th, 2009 by Bassett
Since camp is just a few weeks away, we’d like to know what your thoughts are on which training camp battles you are going to be watching most closely … of course the one at QB and WR … but what else?
What starting positions are you most interested in seeing contested? What depth positions are intriguing to you?

Second TE; DE opposite Ellis (I don’t think Douglas is a lock); Starting CB opposite Revis (Lowery might challenge Lito); Punter; and OLB to replace Pace for the first four games.
That just about summed up al of the battles. I tin the CB battle should be very interesting considering the dept there. Who starts at nickel and who becomes the dime guy
Outside of the comments listed above + who will be the QB, I would say who weighs less by the season opener…. Coach Ryan vs Kris Jenkins
1) Rex Ryan vs Channing Chowder.
2) Postivie (Winning) Scenario: Rex Ryan vs his Ego.
3) Negative (Losing) Scenario: Rex Ryan vs his desire to punch out Schotty during a game.
4) Schotty vs having RB’s in the backfield on 3rd and short.
5) Shaun Ellis vs Puff the Magic Dragon.
6) Bart Scott vs Bart Scott loving him some Bart Scott.
7) Leon Washington vs Pre-game Rituals.
Final RB spot: Will it be Caulcrick, Woodhead, both or neither?
What backup offensive lineman step up is fairly important to me. I specifically want to know what the team has in Slauson, along with where his best position along the line is.
The battle for Pace’s spot during those first four game will be interesting, with Gholston, Murrell, and possibly Westerman in the mix. Keeping with the linebackers, reports so far have been positive about Trusnik, so I’m hoping he has a strong camp, because Harris has been hurt a little too often thus far in his career.
What the team has with Lowery seems to be up in the air, and while I think Lito is going to get the start over him, I would love for Lowery to put up a good fight. Which cornerback ends up playing nickel, over the slot, is certainly important looking at who the Jets play.
Finally, I have not been impressed with Pouha thus far, so how Howard Green looks is something to watch.
Douglas is going to start at DE, there’s no battle to be had there. Who will unseat him? Mike Devito? Ropati Pitoitua? (spelt it correctly without copy & paste, holla) Douglas will start because he’s a solid veteran, experienced in Rex’s defense, and is very good when it comes to stopping the run. He can be subbed out in pass rushing packages by plenty of guys on the roster, so for a two down starting DE I like what he brings to the table. He plays hard as hell, and that’s what Ryan looks for. He is also 3rd in the league over the past 6 seasons in TFL, so he can make some impact plays and blow up offensive lines fairly regularly. He isn’t a very good player, but he is more than decent at his job. I see no way he isn’t the starter, barring injury, come Week 1.
If Woodhead has a great pre-season, they will find a spot for him. I think Caulcrick has a tougher shot now that they have Greene, another power back.
How ’bout Leonhard vs. Erik Smith? Also, will Greene spell Washington more often based on size and durability. I really want to see what comes out of WR and TE situations. On paper, that is probably of most concern. We all believe this should be a top 10 defense. So, for right now, I’m most concerned with OL depth, WR play, and which TE will emerge as a blocker and hopefully be able to contribute to pass catching.
I think the two most interesting are WR and RB. I fully expect Sanchez to be starting day 1. I have much respect for kellen but thats just the reality in my perspective.
WR…it will be interesting to see who gets #2. I guess this interest me more since I follow both Stuckey and Clowney on twitter. I also think they both have major potential and want to see them get a chance to prove themselves unlike the #4 fiasco of QB battle last year.
RB…the spot has been a big question mark all year. I had argued that we should draft a RB early(wanted knowshon), because we needed to groom the right person before we lose TJ.
Now, theres no doubt about who stands where in RB depth, but we have TJ and Leon unhappy with contracts with possible replacements underneath in Greene and Woodhead…so it could turn out to be a huge shakeup in things if Front Office doesnt wan’t to overpay our starters.
PUNTER!!!!
We need a consistent punter. It lost us 2 games last season and field position will be huge with Sanchez early on.
Danny Woodhead vs. The World
I’d love to see Gholston come through during camp this year. I know the early signs are not great, but if he can shine under Ryan, that LB core could be one of the best in the league.
MSM – Amazing! Check out the second comment down on this post:

Maybe “The World” should just be Jehuu’s nickname.
i’m looking @ the QB battle of course. Mark Sanchez OR Kellen Clemens. i think of gholston doesn’t show up in traning camp he wont replace Calvin Pace. it could be jason vertik (not spelled right IK) Whos gonna b our #2 WR another thing i am looking 4word 2. Saftey is another thing.
Bent – haha sorry about that… didn’t mean to steal your thunder there. But I think you’re right… Jehuu might be more appropriate… or maybe Danny Woodhead vs. His Size. He might be the only NFL player thats legitimately prescribed HGH.
“6) Bart Scott vs Bart Scott loving him some Bart Scott.”
The very top of every fan’s list, I think…
How about:
Gholston’s mind v. Gholston’s body.
We know Gholston is an amazing physical specimen, but last year he was confused and overwhelmed by the transition from DE to OLB. I’m skeptical about whether Gholston has the talent to be a bona fide NFL player, but he certainly has the physical ability. Can his mind harness that physical ability? IMO, that’s the biggest question of this training camp.
Mark Sanchez vs. Mugatu
Contrary to popular opinion, I’m not all that worried about the frontline starters across the board, or the guys fighting for those spots. We have enough strengths to allow someone to come up to speed as a starter in the short term.
What keeps me up nights is the BU OL & DL. That’s where I will be focusing all camp. We’re so thin on both lines. We have top-of-the-line starters for both sides, but no one has emerged behind any of these guys.
If we lose a starter on either line, as it stands now, we’re back to ‘07 — either not be able to move the ball, or not being able to stop it. So my eyes will be glued to who, if anyone, decides he’s more than a Special Teams stud, and can actually play downs in the NFL. And if no one qualifies, what Tanny does to fix this glaring hole.
1. I don’t want to see erik smith on the field at any point during the season. He’s not good.
2. I think kellen clemens should start on week one because i think he will perform well under the added pressure of fighting for the starting job.
3. Douglas is a critical player on the team because we don’t have any legit depth at that position and the team really struggled when kenyon coleman didn’t perform well last year so i don’t want to see something similar happen again this year
James Ihedigbo vs. Rhodes, Leonhard, Smith, (Fitzhugh and Cook?)
I think #44 will rise above his fellow safeties in camp.
I would not really call it a camp battle but I am really looking foward to seeing how David Harris plays lined up next to another big time MLB in Bart Scott. He had some injuries last year and did not play bad but it was not the David Harris we saw 2 yrs ago. Should be fun to watch!!
–And I’m with Drew, it would be nice if we could actually have an NFL caliber punter sometime in the 2000s
