Link: Sean Payton Digging the Jets

by Bassett on July 20th, 2009 at 9:47 am

Saints Head Coach Sean Payton starts off his guest appearance on Peter King’s MMQB Column with a bang by mentioning the Jets, and what he expects to see out of the team this year.

One of the great things about our league is the optimism each team and its fan base share at the start of a new year. History has told us there will be four to six new playoff teams this season. Who are this year’s Atlanta Falcons, Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens or Arizona Cardinals? If I had to choose one non-playoff team from last season that has a chance to make it into the 2009 postseason it would be the New York Jets. I think Rex Ryan will do a great job of creating a culture that lends itself to winning. I also love Mark Sanchez as a young quarterback prospect. We will find out soon enough

Hearing that an offensive mind like Sean Payton ‘love[s]‘ Mark Sanchez is a good sign. I do think that it’s going to take some time for Mark Sanchez to adjust to the pros though, based on the limited collegiate time he saw.

I appreciate Payton’s optimism, and his commendation of Ryan’s as well. Like Sean Payton, I am liking what I’ve seen so far too, but like every training camp for the Jets for a few years now, there’s a lot of questions to be answered before the season starts, with the most notable one at QB. Add in what appears to be a tough schedule this season, good, but seemingly thin Offensive and Defensive lines and I’m hopful, but what feels like less so than I was at this time last year. Though, if the Jets do get to the playoffs this year, I full admit that it would be a great foundation for this team over the next few years.

Our thanks to Patrick and Mike in DC for sending this on …

I think Payton has to say positive things about us in order to be PC. However, this team does look like it might have enough spark with Ryan and a big enough chip on it’s shoulder to prove people wrong. We see these turn arounds all the time and while we might not technically be a “turn around” team we all know alot has changed.

As a fan you stay positive but I really think this team has a great feel to it and could surprise everyone. It seems like we have the right guys in the right spots……..just sign LEON !!!

Not that I don’t think its important to stay level headed and remain cautiously optimistic… but Basset seems to always want to slap question marks on positive reviews. I appreciate the reality check… but can someone explain to me how we are worse than last year? Because Id say we were pretty good last year and most of those question marks were there already so we should be much better this year with a total upgrade on defense and a solid addition to the running game. LC wasnt exactly lighting it up last year (to say the least) so we had WR problems … Favre was a question mark because he barely new the system (or cared), so we had QB problems…. our depth wasnt exactly better on the lines… so if we were a a playoff team last year (which we were sans Mangini)… why wouldn’t or shouldn’t we be now? Yeah our schedule is a bit tougher but who can predict the way the teams turn out anyway? The Dolphins schedule is 10 times harder so they def wont be stealing wins from us this year. We SHOULD be splitting with NE on a year year to basis… and TO isn’t exactly scaring to many people in Buffalo. Why even harp on the fact that we could be in trouble if there are injuries on the lines… most NFL teams don’t have great depth there.

    MSM.. well said.

Save the negative stuff for the season….. some ways this is the best time of year for us Jets fans.

Yeah, we’re unbeaten since January. Stop moaning everyone!

I’m as optimistic as they come, but Bassett is a big fan of Football Outsiders’ statistical approach to football and they predict 6 wins. Also, he was skeptical about the Sanchez pick/trade (not sure about his position on Greene). FO’s analysis was not positive on either player. Sanchez had too few starts and Greene had too slow a 40-time. Add in that Lito hasn’t been good for 3 years, Leonhard was good for only 1 year and, while Scott is good, how good will he be without Lewis, Reed, Ngata and Suggs? Plus, the Jets WRs have failed to get enough separation since Santana Moss was traded. Oh, and did I add that, allegedly, the Jets don’t have a blocking TE or good OL or DL depth? And, who knows how Rex will be as an HC? So, if you want to see the glass as half empty, it’s not like you don’t have reasons to. I just think that there’s more reasons to be optimistic.

Sackdance is right on everything… but when you consider the structure of our team and where we stand, the best comparison is last year. Last year we had an awkward QB situation where the entire offense was modified to quickly adjust to him… we still had no separation from WRs (exit Santana… enter???… TBD…. still). Harris, our number one tackler didn’t play. We had a rookie corner being attacked because our sophmore one was THAT good. And we barely had a blocking TE last year, along with a rookie who was still learning how to block but was slowly (when allowed to exit Manginis doghouse)… murdering defenses. We didn’t lose much my friends… and we gained a whole lot. We might of added question marks but those questions marks come stacked with potential. The New Look Jets are ready rock… bring it Brady…

    MSM,

Barring injuries, I have no reason to believe the Jets won’t be significantly better on defense and more balanced on offense. I’m really psyched to see what all the new guys can do because each one is a player or, in Lito’s case, was a player. The season will boil down to whether Sanchez hurts the offense or not. But if he can be like Big Ben or Flacco (Ryan is unlikely considering his rookie season only really compares to Marino’s) and be a “game manager”, which I think is entirely possible, the Jets could get 10+ wins.

I just found it funny he said that the one team who didnt make the playoffs last year but have a chance to this year is the Jets and not the Saints lol…. And we play them this year lol

Shouldn’t Rudy be here to trash Payton?
