News: Ryan Firing Up His Team Via Intarwebs
Jane McManus of the Journal News, did some sleuthing after demolishing her opponents in rollerderby practice last night (take that, Dave Hutchinson) and found some interesting information on a series of tweets yesterday from David Clowney’s in response to something that Rex Ryan emailed to his team.
“I swear Rex Ryan is the Realest Coach alive,” read the first.
Then right on its heels: “All my Teammates, if you haven’t already check your email NOW.”
Turns out the Jets coach didn’t like something he read about the Jets being picked to finish last in the league, and he emailed his players. Ryan used some pretty colorful language to express himself, and it fired up at least one backup wide receiver.
It’s no small secret that the Jets have a tough road ahead of them. I also find it interesting that Ryan didn’t send around the attaboy of his peer Sean Payton, who yesterday wrote on SI for MMQB that he does believe the Jets are a playoff team. I just can’t imagine Eric Mangini sending a fiery email to his players, circling the wagons, making it an us versus them approach to the season, to camp to football. I’m glad that his players are responding to him, and I hope that they can up their level of play because of it.

Ummmm… awesome!
Somebody please leak that email out…
I LOVE THIS GUY
Again…. I am not sure how great of a head coach Ryan will be…. but you can bet your ass they will play hard for him.
We might even lose a game becasue of being over aggressive…..lol
Sure will bet Bob Sutton’s sit on your heels read and react 3-4 snore fest defense. 3rd and 6? Let’s just sit back in a zone and let them throw underneath for 8 yards.
you think that the jets team this year will see a spike in penalties due to their new-found aggressive style of play?
I like that Rex is planting the seeds early on, even before training camp opens. Putting a big chip on their shoulders …
To paraphrase (and twist) Yogi Berra: This game is 90% mental and the other half is physical!
Or, to quote GI Joe… “Knowing is half the battle” but Rex knows that the other half is VIOLENCE.

Absolutely. The Ravens led the NFL in defensive penalties last year:

Guess what though? They still had an amazing defense.
I’ve always been a BIG believer in the “us vs. them” mentality, especially in football. To win meaningful games deep in the season, you need a team that believes in itself. And I’m not saying that Mangini’s teams didn’t, but they never seemed to fully buy into what their team really was. With Ryan, they know, hell, we all know, and they love it. He comes right out and says “we are the jets, we’re going to be aggressive, violent, and fearless” and as long as the team embraces this line of thinking, I think it’s fantastic. Moves like this one, getting the team fired up to give all the non-believers a big “F*#@ you!”, are great tools to build a team in the real sense of the word, rather than a “team” in name and uniform only.
I guess this is great theatre in July. But what really matters occurs at the beginning of September through January.
I hope these guys can deliver.
im going to die if Ryan isnt a great head coach. I hoped and prayed we would get him when most of you wanted Shananagins or the chin. A week into inking Ryan a got a man crush on the dude and it has grown every day. win or lose this is my guy.
I would give anything to see that email.
I am with you 1000% Zartan
Ryan is no dummy either… he knows that this would eventually get out… hes pumping up the entire fanbase with this email… this guy is going to be a legend one way or the other
Oh yeah, baby !
He’s definately the KING of OTAs !
Bubby, since OTA’s have been over for a while, should we say King of the time between OTA’s and training camp?
I heard a Wilbur Marshall anecdote from his ‘85 Bears days. One day Ditka came to address the defense. Wilbur got up and told Ditka that he doesn’t belong with the defense, go back to the offense because the defense listens to Buddy. Then, of course, after the Super Bowl annihilation of the Pats, Buddy was carried off the filed by his defense. If Buddy was good at creating an “us v. them” attitude inside the team, I’m betting that Rex has taken notes from the master.
Does anyone know who picked us to finish last in the league?
So this person thinks Detroit, SF, Oakland, Cleveland, Buffalo, KC, St.L, etc. will do better than us? Interesting!
SackDance,
Wilbur Marshall has to be one of the hardest hitters to ever play the game. The guy was a complete animal on the field.
LOVE IT!
