The Final Countdown: Marques Douglas

MARQUESDOUGLAS.jpg

Position: Defensive End
Player: Marques Douglas
Summary:
The unknown commodity on the defensive line. Douglas has started in the past, but it’s a fair question to ask as to whether or not he can still start and play two or three downs for the Jets for the course of the entire season. Ryan had Douglas play for him in Baltimore last season, so he knows what he’s capable of, but during the 2008 season, Douglas had his fewest tackles since the 2002 season. Douglas is a trench-player who is best against the run, which is good, but not enough. Douglas is likely a player that the Jets will have to consider putting in a rotation and finding a more permanent solution in the coming offseason.

Moving Forward:
Ryan and Pettine know what Douglas is capable of, but I’d expect the team to run more of a rotation at this defensive end spot than anything else. Douglas is no spring chicken and although he can play well enough against the run, he’s not a world-beater at this spot. With Howard Green, Mike DeVito and others, the team has a number of fill-in players that could play in a pinch. Still, this team needs an answer long-term and Douglas is a hold-the-fort option for now.

Questions:
Can Douglas step up his game for the 2009 season? Will the Jets run a rotation here? Can Douglas hold up for the entire 2008 season?

  1. I keep reading that Buffalo is going to run the no huddle a lot this year. Which may lead to a problem with the Jets rotating their linemen.

  2. I hope that Douglas and Gholston aren’t both playing on same side of Defense. If they are, could be a weak link for 1st 4 games.

  3. kane,

I don’t think that Bassett was talking about a situational rotation…I don’t believe that’s the Ryan/Pettine way. I think what they do is have a base defense and run different looks from that base…the personnel doesn’t change. I think he meant that Douglas might rotate for a series to get a breather. I want to see Buffalo run the no huddle against the Jets. If Edwards is back there in the shotgun, I’d blitz over those rookie interior lineman and take him out. Edwards isn’t Jim Kelly, with his cannon arm and great mobility. I think Buffalo will find out that the no huddle won’t work in the AFC East, too many 3-4 defenses.

  4. Thanks SackDance99, NFL Network replayed the Miami – Baltimore playoff game and I was watching as Ngata the DT was standing up in the linebacker position on some plays. So that maybe the solution to giving guys a breather during a drive and also to confuse the offense.

  5. So which DE should we be watching in NCAA for next April?

  6. Suh, from Nebraska A DT that would be a beast in a 3-4 as DE

  7. If people are going to be running the no huddle, then DeVito would be the best choice to start. simply because Douglas is an older player. (no offense)

  8. I mean when you look @ the Bills their starting LT is Langston Walker. Who was soo great that he was released from the Raiders. Dare I say sack-feast on Edwards !!!!

They have the worst O-line in the East, Did Bufffalo not learn anything from Arizona about having nice offensive pieces but no o-line

  9. Attached is a great demonstration, charts and all, of the 46 defense with all the variations of the Mike, Nickel, Charlie and others:

  10. Marques Douglas is to Rex Ryan’s defense what Kenyon Coleman was to Mangini’s defense, nothing more and nothing less.

  11. In terms of overall impact, you’re probably right, although KC was more of an edge setter (especially last year), whereas Douglas will make plays in the backfield.

  12. Interesting link, Fonzie.

If the Browns attempt to run the 46, they are going to struggle, because it will force Elam to take on coverage responsibilities which he simply cannot handle.

  13. Devito is the man this year. Not only the last year in his contract, he is getting a huge boost by having Ryan there instead of Mangenius.

Going into camp he is set to stepping up to the starting role. Watch him closely this year, he is really going for it all.

    Ears pinned!!!

  14. ok. if you had any idea at all what you were talking about — and you don’t — you’d know that Douglas’ strong point is his PASS RUSHING. it’s always been that way. and why did he have the least tackles last year? It’s because he was a BACK-UP in Baltimore. You have no clue at all.
