A Little Insight on the Gholston Decision?

Just a quick thought while listening to the Rex Ryan – Colin Cowherd interview.

When asked about pressure to play a guy because of big rookie contract, Ryan mentioned that he told Ozzie Newsome that if they drafted a defensive player in the first round, that they’d play him, citing DT Haloti Ngata, who the team drafted a few years ago.

“To be truthful, I used to tell Ozzie Newsome that if we drafted a defensive player in the first round … and we actually did that we drafted Haloti Ngata in the first round … and we picked up a good player in free agency in Justin Bannon … we knew that there was a reason we were drafting Haloti Ngata with that high a pick and so when we went to the first drills, Haloti was in there as a starter.”

An interesting perspective on Gholston and maybe why he made the decision he has. Now it’s up to Gholston to live up to his billing.

Umm, so what does THIS say about Rex Ryan’s views regarding a certain Offensive player taken in the first round…hmmmm?

It’s an interesting statement. VG has all the physical attributes but has yet to prove that he’s a football player. I think Rex will find a way for him to succeed, but even if he is the “starter,” it might be a nominal designation should others prove capable. Unless he finds his inner football star at camp, he will not be an every down player.

Bubby – if you get a chance, listen to the whole interview because Ryan goes on to say that this philosophy applies to every position EXCEPT quarterback. With a QB, it’s such a vital position and there’s so much information to absorb that he doesn’t feel compelled to put Sanchez on the field if he’s not ready.

I really haven’t seen anyone spell out the obvious on this subject so I guess I should do it…

To succeed at something one must make an unconditional committment…otherwise…the mind and the soul don’t take the process really seriously.

Further, Dale Carnegie long ago identified that if you want someone to be something for you then compliment them on it.
Coach Ryan has a very shrewd understanding of motivating the human psyche that Coach Mangini didn’t yet have…and by appointing Mr. Gholston in clear public View to this starting role he has ‘complimented’ him on his abilities.

All of this is designed to bring out the best in Mr. Gholston and to accelerate his development. Mr. Gholston may not excell (Nobody- even he knows about this) but he will develop.

So the issue isn’t ‘just’ getting Mr. Gholston to perform this season but to turn him into a winning 10 year proposition. I’d love just like anyone else to see him flabbergast his opponents and us this year but if he doesn’t the groundwork is being laid for success in the coming years.

It doesn’t take a seer to see the Coach Ryan has the qualities to make himself the greatest coach in Jets history. Great Things always start out with myriad small actions…

Obviously Rex is trying to motivate Gholston.

Naming him the starter means he will start the game….. if he sucks he will be out of the game and the fans will continue to hate. Soooo, this compliment or declaration is way more reward then risk.

I agree with what Rex is doing and I know we will be a much improved team just off attitude. There have been plenty teams that have sucked on paper and gone further then “Play-off teams.” i.e. 08 Giants

    Rasputtin,

How you do refer to Vernon as Mr. Gholston and not refer to Dale Carnegie as Mr. Carnegie. I believe Mr. Carnegie has earned this respect. Are you trying to disrespect Mr Carengie or show respect to Vernon, thinking he may read this blog? If the latter, then are you also trying to motivate this young man by compliment.

    A few thoughts.

First off, we know how Rex feels about highly drafted players who are making a lot of money. He expects — practically ASSUMES — they will start and play well. But as it’s been mentioned before, “starting” doesn’t mean playing the whole game, or even half the game. Let’s say one guy plays the first half of the game, another guy plays the second half. Sure, the first guy was the starter, but really what difference does that make? Especially when you’re dealing with a defense as seemingly flexible as Ryan’s?

He’s not interested in paying tons of money to a guy just so he can sit on the bench. People ask, “What does this say to guys like Murrell, to other guys competing for that job, when Rex just hands it to Gholston?” Well, on the other hand, if Rex just religated Vernon to the bench, people could ask, “What does this say to the starters, who are making the league minimum, while Vernon plays one series a game and makes more than them?” It goes both ways, so I support Rex in his decision. Put the responsibility where it belongs, in the hands of the first round draft pick who’s SUPPOSED to be a starter.

Interesting take by Rex. I don’t think it has anything to do with money or a contract. Rex sees it like, “OK kid, we drafted you this high, now go show us what you got and that you are worthy of that draft pick”.

  9. avatar SackDance99 says:

This is the first time that I disagree with Rex. Of course, he has much more information than I have and this might be the best way to motivate Gholston, but VG just doesn’t seem to have the football skills to match his measurables. I’m old enough to remember Carl Barzilauskas, all 6-6, 270 lbs of him (huge for a DE back then), who was, ironically, the 6th pick of the first round in 1974. They said of Carl that “he looks like Tarzan, but hits like Jane” (I know, sexist, Gina Carano could beat me to a pulp…and I might enjoy it, but that’s off-topic). I just have the feeling that history is repeating itself with VG.

  10. avatar GoalieTJ1 says:

Well unlike all of you, i have a great feeling about gholston this year!!! I think he is going to play well this year despite the lack of confidence given to him by the jets fans.

  11. avatar RobbyP says:

Lets be honest. What was Gholston best at in college? Rushing the passer. Mangina tried to drop him back 75% of the time and thats the results you get in the crap 3-4 defense that mangini ran. Rex is not afraid to rush 4 or 5 and gholston will be producitve when his only instruction is “Get the QB”. He just needs to bullrush. 2008 proved he is not a linebacker that can play in coverage.
