Greetings From Cortland!
Hey everyone –
I got here to Cortland in one piece, and now I’m getting ready for camp tomorrow! A few things I thought I’d share with those planning on making the trek out here …
- Cortland is welcoming the Jets and their fans with their arms wide open! The whole town is Jets-centric at the moment — green-and-white banners are festooned from the light posts in downtown, there are Jets logos painted in traffic circles, and pretty much every business has some sort of “Welcome Jets Fans” sign or banner in front of it. In more than one business, employees are decked out in Jets jerseys and caps, and the Chamber of Commerce has printed nice Jets-themed fold-out flyers with all sorts of local attractions and restaurants. It’s a virtual Jets village here, and quite frankly, sort of puts Hempstead to shame. (In the words of ’80s hair band Cinderella — “Don’t know what you got, till it’s gone …”)
- From any direction you are coming, once you get off the highway, the way to SUNY Cortland is marked very clearly with large green-and-white “NY Jets Training Camp” signs pointing the way. I think I should mention that the main road in — Route 281 — is in the midst of being torn up, with lanes closed and lots of orange cones, so there’s a potential for traffic troubles. Give yourself a few extra minutes to get here.
- Speaking of traffic — apparently SUNY Cortland will be charging each car $5 to park, “to help defray costs.” By NFL rules, a team can’t charge fans to attend training camp, but I guess that doesn’t cover the host or parking. The fields and surrounding areas are already blocked off by security teams, so don’t think you’re going to be able to sneak in early!
- There seems to be lots of Jets fans here already — the real test will be what the crowds look like tomorrow morning, and if they are sustained throughout the duration of camp. I don’t doubt it may be heavy this weekend, then tapering off as the weeks pass.
Anyway, I hope that helps any of you on your way up here! If I think of or notice anything else, I’ll pass it along.

a little off topic.. but i think we should bring in Anthony Mix for a tryout. He had a good pre-season with the Giants a few years ago and is 6-5 235. He was just arrested for having sex with a minor, but i think he is a good talent and could push our other recievers.

“He was just arrested for having sex with a minor”
I don’t think we need a guy who is dumb enough to sleep with a 15 year old girl

YEAH……Red…..NOT a GOOD idea.

“Editor”,
I get it already! you hate woody, but please tell us where it said in the post that the Jets were the one charging for the parking?

majasko,
Forget the Editor, he’s lost all perspective with Woody. If it tops 90 degrees at camp the Ed will write about the secret heat lamps that Woody installed to force the fans to buy bottled water.
Anything that happens with the Jets the Ed finds a Woody conspiracy behind it.

Welcome to our little city :) I’m actually a Giants fan, but it is great to have a pro team here and I’ll be checking out camp as much as I can. Fortunately I can walk up to the fields so I don’t have to fork over the $5 every day! Also, it looks like that part of Rt 281 is just about finished so hopefully the construction will only be a problem for a few days. They really went to town on it once it was confirmed that the team would be here.

Leave it to Woody to find a way to charge JETS fans for attending training camp. $5 is another Woody ripoff.
