News: TJ Reports, Leon Doesn’t

by Bent on July 30th, 2009 at 10:54 am

All veteran players were required to show up at Florham Park at 7am this morning. Hutch is reporting that Thomas Jones turned up, but Leon Washington was a no-show.

While everyone still seems to be confident that a contract extension for Leon will be finalized by the end of the weekend, Leon apparently did not show up, despite the fact he was at the complex yesterday.

That is Alvin Keels at his best. I have to say I’m a bit disappointed, but Keels feels this is the best way to approach new contracts.

  2. avatar ronnie says:

I have more respect for thomas jones and even drew rosenhaus after this.

    Good job TJ!

i just saw a banned ad on espn.com advertising 2009 jets season tickets. this cannot be a good sign for the state of ticket sales. forget about 2010 and PSLs, i just hope they can sell out 2009

    Well…

    That’s not good.

Pay TJ 3 mil this year and fine Leon. nuff said

I hope TJ gets a bonus for good behavior this off-season! This guy should get his contract re-worked (or get an extra year added at a reduced amount)

  8. avatar Matt says:

Sorry, but no… no he should not. Jones signed a contract, and he is obeying his contract. That does not deserve anything other than respect for being a teamn player.

Leon is willing to give up some cash to put some pressure on the FO. He’s come out to events in the past, and I doubt he wants to hurt the team. If he holds out, it just won’t be for that long… unless he’s not the character guy we all believe he is.

  9. avatar MrJetGreen says:

Well I don’t know what has been offered to Leon so its hard to say why this can’t get done. If Leon has been offered Cotchery money and turned it down then shame on him.

  10. avatar Josh in Orlando says:

Am I correct when I say that each day Leon holds out he gets fined $15,000?

  11. avatar John Z says:

Josh, I believe that’s $17k per day. But, generally, if they reach a deal, the team waives the fine.

  12. avatar neauone says:

Keels or L.W. its a terrible mistake, now if L.W. does show up, it will be late, don’t expect this to be a short hold out. L.W. wants 6 million, the Jets offered 4.5 million 1.5 million apart. Long shot to get this done soon. Expect the Jets to Franchise him the next 2 years.

  13. avatar AKA.....Drew says:

Just when i thought Keels and Leon get it….. they totally redeem themselves!!!!

This guy wants more reps and money and he is missing camp? Wonderful!!

  14. avatar mole57 says:

neauone — if they franchise him, they’d have to pay him more than he’s asking.

  15. avatar neauone says:

I think he would get what the top 5 get, but he want’s top pay from what I have read. If that is true, they don’t have to franchise him until next year, he will lose 5 million this year alone, not to mention the fines and I believe they can franchise him for 2 more years after that.

  16. avatar fattyboomboom says:

they don’t need to use the franchise tag, he’s under contract this year, and would only be a restricted FA next year, they could tender him at around 2 million(at most)

Year after that they would need to use the tender, but thats a long way off

  17. avatar James in TN says:

I hope that Tanny gives him 3 mil per and puts in the contract that the money is only contingent on Keels not representing him, lol.

  18. avatar Harvlis says:

This is not a good sign of how contract talks are progressing. Unless, Leon doesn’t want to get hurt, before he signs. I hope this is done by the weekend. Leon is a difference maker. Using him properly is a step towards the playoffs.

  19. avatar Bent says:

FBB – he’s only a RFA next year if there’s no cap. There still might be.

  20. avatar StvDoe says:

    neauone,

Where did you read the team offered 4.5 per year? I’d be shocked (and upset) of the Jets offered Leon this much. And I’d be even more shocked if Leon turned this much down.

So, again, where did you get this number?

  21. avatar StvDoe says:

I see by reading further down that you got this number from the Cimini article.

I really hope this isn’t true…..it’s just too much money for Leon, (unless a large portion is in incentives).

  22. avatar Bent says:

StvDoe – First off, Hutch also said between 4m and 5m, so it’s not just Cimini. However, all they are doing is guessing, based on the parameters. It’s almost senseless for them to be talking in “per year” number terms.

I wouldn’t get too excited (or shocked/upset) over the final numbers, whatever they may be until the full details come out. As an example, Cotchery’s deal contains de-escalators, so he will receive less than the total reported value of his contract if he doesn’t meet certain targets. So if the Leon deal is 4.5m with no incentives, it may come out later that it includes such clauses, which mean the risk of him not being able to play like the every down back he’d be being paid like would be covered. (In fact, if Keels’ bonus is based on gross earnings, he’d be smart to do the deal this way round!)

Also, the guaranteed money is a more important figure. I’d rather see him get 25m over 5 years, with 10m guaranteed than 25m over 6 years, with 12m guaranteed.

  23. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

Mole 57 wrote, “neauone — if they franchise him, they’d have to pay him more than he’s asking.”

You are completely wrong mole, mole mole (gratuitous Austin Powers quote). Keels is asking for 6 mil a year (we have heard it from so many sources I think we can rely on the accuracy of that number) and a big part of it guaranteed.

If we stay firm this year, and even if there is a CBA (which is not certain) and he becomes a Unrestricted Free Agent, he only gets something like $525K this year and $6.2 mil next year (RB are a relatively cheap Tag) for an average salary of less than $3.5 mil over the two years with NONE of it guaranteed. That means if he gets hurt before rosters are set, he doesn’t even get the full $525K and if he gets hurt during this year, he gets nothing else.

If you have read any of Bent’s or my other posts on this subject, you also know that he makes even less money if there is no CBA. And, he is tied up for three years!

IOW, if they do nothing and tag him he gets about half what he is asking for, no guarantee, and if he is hurt, he and Keels get what they both deserve: Nothing.

  24. avatar Bent says:

Keels may be a little distracted now that the 7th pick has signed, so the two picks bookending the Andre Smith pick are now known.

Sanchez got 28.5m guaranteed and DHB reportedly got 23.5m. You can bet Keels will want to split the difference, but – if the figure is accurate – the Raiders overpaid by a couple of million there (Gholston, last year’s 6th pick, only got 21m), so this will drive the Bengals and Keels further apart on that deal.

  25. avatar Bent says:

Note: A good comparison for Keels would be D’Brick, the fourth pick in 2006. He got less than 18m in guarantees.

WELL SAID!!!!!! LEON & KEELS ARE JUST PLAIN ACTING LIKE DOUCHE BAGS NOW!!! FROM ALL REPORTS THAT I HAVE READ IT’S NOT LIKE THE JETS ARE NOT TRYING…THEIR OPINION OF FAIR MARKET VALUE IS A BIT SKEWED, FROM WHAT I HAVE READ. THIS IS STUPID….FINE HIS ASS….IS IT POSSIBLE TO FINE KEELS TOO???

  27. avatar Jason says:

Keels problem with Smith is that almost everyone throws QBs out of the slotting as well as certain teams such as Oakland because they do such a wacky job. In fairness to the Raiders the Jets were officially thrown off the slotting by teams and agents in 2008 due to the Revis deal in 2007 which overpaid by 3-4 slots to get the extra year. Really the deal everyone wants to see is Crabtree. That is the team and player that is going to set the real market for the top picks.

  28. avatar Bent says:

Actually, I’d say it was Smith’s problem with Keels. I’ve been saying for months that Keels’ unrealistic expectations would hold up the deal.

I heard Crabtree wants number 3 money. That’s just going to raise Keels’ expectations. I feel sorry for the Bengals. As I said before, I love Andre Smith and would have been excited if he ended up a Jets and also that I felt he had first pick talent, but now if I was drafting, I’d probably take anyone with Keels as their agent off my board. It’s just not worth the hassle/extra money.

I wish someone with more sway than me would vocalize the same opinion! That might bring him down to earth.
