Transcripts: Kellen Clemens 7/31/2009
Here’s a transcript of QB Kellen Clemens from the media availability.
On the weather conditions…
At least it wasn’t hot. It was a nice, cool day and easier to stay hydrated. We had a good start this morning and we will come back this afternoon and do the same thing.
On the first practice going the way he wanted it to go…
It kind of went the way that you expect the first practice to go. The rain was a little bit of an issue. We had some balls sail to be honest. But it’s a good opportunity for us because we’re certainly not going to play 16 regular season games without playing one in the rain. It’s a good opportunity early to work on some mechanics. We have a long way to go.
On the defense…
They installed a lot faster for training camp than they did for OTAs. It’s the second time a lot of those guys have heard it and they are catching on very quickly. You go all the way back to high school, it’s traditionally the way it is. Don’t worry about us offensively, we will be rolling soon enough. It always takes us a little bit to get back on the same page and shake off a little rust but we’re only one practice in.
On his feelings about Rex Ryan naming him the number one quarterback right now…
Yes it does (give me confidence). I appreciate you sharing that with me (laughter). It means a lot going into it. I think it gives me more time with the wide receivers and tight ends and the offensive line to develop more chemistry. That’s exciting.
On seeing the starting job as his to lose…
My approach to this camp is to do whatever I can to prepare myself and my teammates so that we can get ready to win the world championship. That is our goal and it’s all of our approach.
On Mark Sanchez getting more reps with the first unit as training camp continues…
It’s not my concern because it’s not my decision. The coaches are making the decisions. As was said earlier, Coach Ryan has designated me the starter going in, so my goal, my preparation, my concentration is to prepare myself and my teammates to make a run at the world championship.
On having training camp at SUNY Cortland…
Obviously we have a beautiful facility down there in Florham Park but it is nice to get up here and get away from a lot of the distractions. (SUNY Cortland) is a beautiful place. Weather is a little questionable after the first practice (laughter). A lot of people in this area have made sacrifices and made an effort to welcome us and that means a lot to us. But, you get away from the distractions of home and have a chance to bond as a team. We are a close-knit team. We’ll be able to battle through some of the adversities that will undoubtedly come up over the course of the season. The work that we are doing right now on the field and off the field will hopefully pay dividends in November and December.
On the receivers being called one of the weaknesses of the team…
That’s all (outside) perception. If you ask the guys in here who watch the guys work you will see (that’s not accurate). Jerricho Cotchery is someone that we have a lot of confidence in. We have other guys who might not have the big name but they are very talented. There is Chansi Stuckey, David Clowney, Brad Smith and a young guy, Britt Davis. We have a lot of talented guys that we have a lot of confidence in. Outside perception is not a concern.
On his focus…
I try to focus on what is inside the white lines. That is what is important right now and that is what is going to make this team win. That is what I am focused on.

Is it me or has KC never said anything wrong to the media… He’s exactly like Pennington ive never once heard him kill his teammates or call anybody out.
but maybe he should?
he shouldn’t be too much like pennington. i got man love for pennington, but seeing how chad got dealt, it might be the wrong footsteps to follow.
everyone loves the nice guy, cause its easier to walk over him.
Greene, there are worse men and even worse Qb to emulate other than Penny.
I like that Penny’s legacy has been passed on and there is some professionalism being demonstrated.
It can only help our team in the short and long run.
AFAIK, Qbs don’t run or pass with their mouths.
