Link: Lowery Developing Into NFL Player

by Bassett on August 3rd, 2009 at 10:47 am

Greg Bishop of the Times wrote a really excellent article on Dwight Lowery and his struggles as a rookie, and his blooming level of maturity and confidence now as a second year player.

Honestly. I could copy and paste the whole thing as the whole thing is that good, but I think you’d be better served by checking out the article in whole.

As far as Lowery, I would not be surprised to see him be the starter for this team by the end of the season. It’s what I hope for with Sheppard’s rather large bonus coming next year …

Good article! What is informing, is what we all believed last year- Mangini and his coaching staff were horrible; infusing a negative attitude in the team, breaking down players, and embarrassing them; rather than encouraging and building up players! Thank God he’s gone and Ryan, the complete opposite is here!

As part of draft-day discussions, the Packers will keep their 2010 seventh-round pick that was supposed to go to the Jets when Brett Favre retired after one season in New York.

Explained GM Ted Thompson: “The Jets needed a little bit more flexibility in case they wanted to use some future picks to trade. So since that seventh rounder was sort of a throwaway on the (Favre trade), we agreed to change some language in the trade papers in return for the seventh-round pick.”

CORTLAND _ Great early action in the Jets monring practice today on SUNY Cortland’s football stadium field.

There were some fireworks during the 9-on-9 running drill with RB Thomas Jones taking some wild swings at S James Ihedigbo after Ihedigbo made a tackle on Jones running a sweep to the right. Whatever Ihedigbo did ticked Jones off and Jones went wild. Several teammates quickly dragged Jones away.

Moments later in the same drill, DT Howard Green took a swipe at FB Christopher Brock and another brawl ensured, with several other players getting involved _ including mild-mannered LB Vernon Gholston, who tried to kick someone.

Yet again in the same drill, S Ahmad Carroll and T Nevin McCaskill got into it for a few moments before other teammates, including CB Darrelle Revis and LB Marques Murrell piled on playfully to end the drill.

    More to come later,.

i don’t like teammates kicking and brawling with each other.. not good!

I did find a good video on youtube that’s called “Jet Fans in Cortland”… someone put together some nice videos of drills and stuff..

    JetObsessed,

There’s probably not an NFL coach who doesn’t want some fights in camp. You want your players to care, be intense and passionate, right? If your team is fighting, what kind of hurt will they put on their opponents? I mean you don’t want a Steve Smith assault situation, but you do want the team to have a pulse.

Lowery will be a stud. I was on the bandwagon early and got killed late for praising him. i will continue this year. i just think the kid is a player.

Loving the brawls until someone gets hurt… then I will scream about it….lol

Yet more evidence that many of the things Mangenius did were counter-productive. He inherited the Napoleonic outlook from Bellichicken, but obviously didn’t employ it as well. I think Rex will push his players hard, but by setting and declaring high expectations. Positive reinforcement can be a powerful thing, and negative reinforcement can become defeating. Feel sorry for the Browns. I really liked Mangini at first, but his ways wore thin quickly.

For most rookies, the first year is more a tutorial than anything else [unless of course your put in ASAP and expected to turn the team around] but with Mangini’s negative attitude that no doubt made things worse [poor Browns].

I look forward to seeing Lowery blossom into a great player and a potentially elite CB. Just think of the havoc that Revis and Lowery could create … but first things first.

Lowery was great at the start of last season. Not good, great. It’s obvious he has something there, but the Jets have a history of rookie DBs looking good over the last 4 or 5 years (Rhodes = developed into great player, E Coleman = went slowly backwards, D Coleman = proved to be a flash in the pan), so it remains to be seen which way he’ll go.
