Link: Teammate Wonders if Gholston “Want[s] It”
It’s no secret that Vernon Gholston is being asked to do more for the Jets this season with the suspension of Calvin Pace. Although Gholston is making some progress that is evident in practice, there’s still a long road ahead for Gholston. One of his teammates confided in The Daily News’ Rich Cimini, saying:
“He’s strong as hell, but the question is, does he want it?” said one player, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “It’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen. He’s got talent, and he doesn’t lack confidence, but sometimes he’s like an 18-year-old kid who’s never played the game before.”
Well the truth of the matter is that he did come to football late (high school), but I thought that could be a good thing, but it would seem that maybe this teammate disagrees.
As we’ve said. There’s probably very few coaches who would be equipped to help get Gholston to where he needs to be, and if anyone could do it, it’ll be Rex Ryan.

how this kid was rated so high in the draft by so many teams with this many questions amazes me. a real goof by tanny.
Don’t Jet fans just love Cimini’s ability to find Jet players willing to bad mouth their teammates?
And I thought he lacked any journalistic skills.
I wonder if it is a defensive player competing for PT with VG?

This is the point I have been making all along. This is a guy who started playing football because he was a freak in the gym, not because he loved playing the game. He never seems interested, nor reflects a love or passion for the game; so therefor, he just gets dressed and goes out and lines up where they tell him.
Ryan naming him the starter was the best thing he could have done, to see if that lights a fire under his ass. Meaning if he knows he has to go out there and be in the throws of it, he should start to show some concern about wanting to look good, not make himself look bad. If he does not bode well in these four games, knowing he has had all camp to work toward it, then this kid can be officially called a “BUST”. I just hope we don’t have to lose a Westerman or Murrell on the roster because of this uninspired multi-millionaire,
i cant stand when reporters write stories that are primarily focused around quotes by an anonymous player. it just seems like load of bullcrap.
You think Ryan can help here? Rex inherited two things: 1) His Fathers legendary knowledge and imagination on the D and 2) A magnificent set of defensive players at Baltimore.
I’ve tried to look for it, but I don’t see an instance of Ryan taking on a project like this one and being successful at it. You could point to Leohnard (sp?) I guess, but even he actually got playing time at the Bills. No?
Sometimes he’s like an 18 year old kid that has never played the game before.
Yesterday the coach compares him to a guy on the 85 bears that Buddy said sometimes he’s not sure if he’s a right linebacker or a left linebacker.
Is the guy just not bright enough for the much more complicated NFL game and linebacker position?
Don’t believe the hype. This is all conjectural BS. Give the kid a chance to get his feet under him. Didn’t he play a new position last year and also miss a lot of the “Install” due to his collegiate obligations at Ohio State? His head was swimming out there. Also the last coaching staff did a horrible job in developing and preparing him for the NFL. They got nothing out of him which was ridiculous. Do you think he would had the same stat line up in NE?
With a year of experience and a new aggressive coaching staff and scheme, he should and definitely improve. Relax.
Obviously we’ll need to wait and see, but if there’s credibility behind this quote it kinda reinforces the idea that rookies shouldn’t get such lucrative contracts before ever taking the field. There was similar criticism about him in college. I believe the quote I heard was something to the effect of him being absent too frequently when a play didn’t seem to be significant, or that he “takes plays off”.
You can’t teach heart….you just can’t. Let’s hope there’s not much truth to this stigma.
He’ll be fine.
trade him to cleveland for braylon edwards.
If it weren’t for the $19m cap hit that would arise, the fact Mangini obviously wouldn’t want him and the fact that for all we know he might be a better player than Edwards in a couple of years time, that would be a great idea.
This was the fear of VG coming out of college. Plus the coaches said the same thing before camp started. He has superior strength and speed but he has yet to translate to the field.
He can lift the weight room but cant move a tackle or gaurd. He will play better this year but he will continue to make mistakes until he understands what he is doing. He hesitates becasue he dosent know.
Gotta love Anonymous Player.
Cimini, are you doing your best Stephen Glass impersonation or what?
Again its the same questions that came out when he was in the draft. There is no question about his superior athleticism.
Maybe if he doesnt become a great OLB. Could he be a DE?? I mean he lacks the bulk, but he has all the other tools.
I hope Ryan can make something out of him
I don’t believe any player made this comment to Rich.
He’ll be a flashy but inconsistent contributor this year, but he’ll at least gets his name out there.
This guy just needs time. 2010 should be his “get it together” year, it’s how it is for most players drafted where he was.
Gholston is fine. He needs for everyone to stop looking at him through a small window where his success is measured and compared to that of other players or even his playing time. He is progressing each day. He is given a chance to develop but with the NY media and the NY fan impatience its impossible to see the growth of the guy. Just imagine what it would be like to see him without looking at him with so much pressure and expectations. Fans want to see the finished product this YEAR or this DAY. Well you might get what you wished for because the NY media will make this guy grow everyday older and older. Pretty soon he will have white hairs and won’t have grown at all. This is why I wish Mangini or someone who sees the real value in him to take him and TEACH him what he needs to make himself better.
I still believe he is learning the game. In the nfl you need to learn fast but you must use everything to help you move forward. By holding him under expectations and throwing him under the bus only puts a negative cloud over him. How do we know that he is not meeting expectations? For all we know he is at the right speed and at the right place right now to play the game. Who cares what fans and other players have to say.
The media needs to relax….One thing that the media doesn’t harp on is the fact that he was the A.H.T.C. all offseason. Why? To get better… mentally and physically. It is easy not to make an impact when you don’t have the proper development (teaching) from the coaching staff. I (for one) believe this staff will get it right and put him in position to make plays. Therefore I have two questions for the naysayers:
1) If Belicheck would have drafted him (which he wanted to) would he have made an impact?
2) When he does make an impact this year will the media apologize for the “bust” label?
