Link: Chansi Continues to Impress
We had predicted that Chansi Stuckey was going to make a splash at camp this year … mostly because he has at the last two, raising his game each year, culminating in a 32 catch 3 TD backup role in 2008. Rich Cimini writes that Chansi Stuckey is again impressing media types.
Stuckey was terrific in the afternoon practice, consistently getting open against the starting secondary. In a 7-on-7 drill, he beat nickel back Donald Strickland and S Kerry Rhodes on a deep post for about 35 yards — nice pass by Clemens. Later, Stuckey made two more catches in 11-on-11 drills … [i]deally, Stuckey is better in the slot, where he can take advantage of his short-area quickness. It’ll be interesting to see how he adapts to being an ‘X’ or ‘Z’ receiver. Personally, I think Stuckey has a chance to be a good player. People forget that he caught 32 passes for three touchdowns last season in a backup role.
The question is, what do they have after Stuckey and Cotchery?
A good question that Cimini asks, and one that doesn’t seem to be resolving itself just yet. I think many fans expect that Clowney will contribute, but it sounds like he’s had a quiet camp so far. Stuckey has put the time in and has come a long way from his rookie season in 2007. The Jets might still be scouring the veteran WR market, but if they are serious about getting a guy, they should do it soon. As it stands and with very little rumor of it, I think that the Jets might not get one at all.

Stuckey is going to be a very solid option this year. Think something like 60 rec. for 800 yards or so, maybe 5 or 6 TDs. Or so I hope.
I can’t help but think we would benefit from signing Matt Jones. I know the guy hasn’t proven to be a #1, but he’s huge and runs fast. He can be had for super cheap, and if he’s a pain in the neck we can cut him loose.
It seems like the sort of move there is no reason NOT to make.
From what I saw, Stuckey was always lined up with the first team across from Cotchery, and played very well. He reminds me a lot of Coles, especially the way he comes back to the ball rather than wait for it to get to him. He’s also a little taller and faster, I think, and seems to be very good after the catch.
Clowney is still way too inconsistent to be a starter. Great speed and big-play potential, but he still drops a lot of easy passes.
Brad Smith looked a lot better than I expected — could he finally be getting it? It’d be great if he was more consistent as he’s got very good speed and is dangerous in the open field.
One of the guys they clearly like because of his speed is Paul Raymond, but he also is very raw and inconsistent.
Cimini also claimed that someone who kows a lot about NFL personnel told him that without a game-breaking WR, it will be nearly impossible for a young QB (either Sanchez or Clemens) to play well. I am so sick of hearing that stuff. The Ravens last year had Derek Mason and nobody else. Is anybody really supposed to believe that the Jets can’t do as well as that group? And the Chargers had nobody but Gates when Rivers first started- 14-2 wouldn’t be so bad. I like to check Cimini’s blog b/c he’s been on the beat so long, he seems to have the best access to Jets staff. His gloomy gus act gets tired though.
I might be wrong but I think a guy named Wayne Chrebet was a slot receiver before he became the #2.
We need look no farther.
Cothcery, Keller, and Stuckey can get the job done with a good running game.
We need a #1 if we want to really make things happen this year.
I agree Stuckey is a good player and i Iove keller and Cotchery but we dont have one guy that scares anyone.
I hate to say this but I am warming to the Matt Jones deal. i know he is a coke head but the guy does scare opposing DB’s more than what we have.
Get him cheap and lets go!
As Rex said yesterday on Sirius radio concerning the WR position “knowbody should be feeling sorry for us, we have good players”, and I believe it.
How can anybody say we are deficient with playmakers when we have Keller, Cotchery, Washington, and Stuckey? With those four on the field at the same time, how can any team cover all four, and not get burned?
TE is the position we really need to worry about.
Matt Jones is not a coke head. He dabbled and got caught- not very bright in that regard. But, he is no coke head.
I used coke on many occassions in college. Could have been caught many times. Haven’t touched the stuff in over 25 years. I don’t consider myself a coke head. You may, but you would be way over the top.
This kid deserves a second chance. To produce as he did last year, switching from QB to WR, puts him about on schedule to have a breakout year. If he doesn’t, he probably never will. But, to get the opportunity to find out by signing him to a proformance based contract is a steal.
Markin,
I couldn’t agree more. Matt Jones would be a low risk, high reward signing for the Jets, and a player they could really use, everyone deserves a second chance.
Markin,
Its not so much what he did but do the Jets feel he will not go back to “dabbling”. It is great to hear that you were able to overcome but drug habbits are hard to break.
Stuckey should be good in the slot. They need a #2. Must pick one up because he is not on the squad.
For an NFL player to be in a pickup truck cutting up cocaine with his credit card isnt a coke head…. then I dont know what is?
I think the guy deserves a second chance… even though he has gotten 2 chances from the NFL already and was suspended.
I am sorry the line offended you but until proven otherwise. Matt Jones is a very talented WR who happnens to be a coke head.
Drew, what if he used cocaine once or twice a year, and just happened to be caught one of those times?
I’m not say that is the case, but I am saying just because he was caught doing something once doesn’t mean its a habit.
The other thing he was caught for was drinking a beer on a golf couse. Let me ask you, have you ever played golf above the age of 21? Because drinking a beer while playing golf is tantamount to drinking milk while eating a cookie. It’s just what ya do.
The real bottom line is this: none of that really matters. The dude HAS talent and WILL play for someone this year, it might as well be us. As has been said, if he’s trouble all we need to do is cut/bench him.
I’m pretty certain that at this point the Jets have NO intention of signing any of the FA WRs who are available. Face it, if they wanted to, it would have been done long ago. Other than Plax, (who obviously won’t be an option), there’s been NO talk linking the Jets to any of these guys. If there was ANY interest on the Jets part, there would have been something in the media by now.
That’s not to say that there won’t be somebody cut down the line who will spark our interest. But for now, it looks like we’re “dancin’ with who we brung”.
im sick and tired of reading of mostly every1s panicing of our WRs not being good enough…i think you guys are getting to carried away with we need a #1 WR…cotch isnt an elite # 1 but is better than any # 2 out there…keller is gonna be a beast as our TE…FROM WHAT I SAW FROM STUCK LAST year he will amaze all of us this year…the only reason you guys dont feel safe with him is becuz of that idiot mangini put him in his dog house…and for what…doing good as farve’s early favorite target…he catches everything in arms length…i mean…enough is enough…the horse is dead and your all still kicking it…
as for our QBs…i never saw as much hatred towards a player as i have read here towards KC…I NEVER SAW PEOPLE WANT A GUY TO FAIL AT LIFE AS I HAVE HERE…godbless…give the guy a chance…this little bi.ch sanchez hasn’t even played a game and most of you want him to start…no thanks but i’ll take my chances with KC…AND HE WILL PROVE ALL YOU DOUBTERS WRONG…
all i have been reading is give sanchez a good running game and he’ll do good…well wouldn’t the same be true for KC…im a diehard jets fan my whole life…but im gonna laugh my asss off if sanchez is a bust just like his boy lienart…wether you like them or not…these are just my thoughts…have a good day…
Matt Jones has done plenty of coke. He is a pro athlete who can get it whenever…. no once or twice biz.
Our WRs will be fine. There have been plenty of teams with worse options in the previous seasons and have been fine. We few have plenty of options and really the ball should only go to Leon or Keller.
Good day to you too, dakar…
see? I can be civil sometimes…
…DAMMIT !
:-)
Agree with Pdubbs, The Jets have more proven commodities at WR than the Giants, Bears and Titans. Let’s all relax and see how it all shakes out.

R in CT,
Just curious how Clowney is way to inconsistent and drops passes? You watching every practice this year or something cause how many times has clowney played where he is dropping all these passes?
18 Urrutia, Mario,WR6′6″ 232 this kid was one the best in collage before he got hurt give him a chance he can be deadly has anyone got any news on how he’s been doing at camp
Clowney was cut from Green Bay for that reason, but yes, R in CT covered the first few practices for us and witnessed that with his own eyes. Since then most camp reports have been reinforcing what he said.
I expect he’ll make some big plays, possibly more than Stuckey, but Stuckey will get more playing time because he is more reliable.
We’ll see what happens once the games start.
Cakeboy – Urrutia has not had much of a shot with the first or second unit yet, but they seem to be rotating guys, so maybe he’ll get his shot. So far, he hasn’t made much of an impact in camp.
Urrutia has apparebtly been cut
Okay, so maybe he won’t get his shot then!
Cotchery, Keller, and Stuckey will be solid between the 20’s, but the Jets still need a big, red-zone target like Edwards or Marshall to compete with the elite.
Good enough will only be good enough against the average teams.
