E_Man Wonders Who Should Start

by Bassett on August 6th, 2009 at 5:00 pm

We just wrote a piece about who should be the starter, and so did a friend.

Our friend Erik Mannasy wrote a blog post about going to training camp and in this one he gives his impressions of getting up close to Mark Sanchez. Rather than cut down his post to a bite size piece, I’d suggest reading it yourself, it’s worth consideration.

People are so afraid of starting a rookie they are literally pointing to vocal leadership now to make the argument for Clemens starting. Not skill, not arm strength, not interceptions… vocal leadership. The kid is 22 years old and in his second week of camp. Why are people expecting him to be loud, yelling at players, and pumping 30 year old men up after 2 weeks? Please… this is getting ridiculous now. We need to stop being afraid of the rookie thing. It CAN work if he has the team around him. In fact… speaking of vocal leadership… I’ve never heard Flacco speak!

I just want to make one thing crystal clear. Sanchez has been one of the most highly touted QBs to come out of Southern Cal ever (on every level he has ever played at he has won). He was drafted in the first round after we jumped to get him and would of been drafted in the first round regardless. He has the footwork, the arm, the attitude and the ability to handle the media. There is NO QUESTION he is a better QB than Clemens ever was and there is no question he will be a better QB than Clemens ever will.

STOP FEARING THE ROOKIE… he will not be the reason the Jets lose… and if he is, than we can all rely on Mr. Average to plug the hole after.

Wow, it seems Sanchez isn’t showing the leadership of a 4 year veteran yet…..oh ya, he’s a roofie, thats right, LOL.

Bottom line is we won’t know how either will look until the games begin.

    MSM;

Wasn’t leadership one of his MAJOR traits for which he was drafted # 5 overall ?
Isn’t that supposed to be a MAJOR trait of ALL QBs ?

Its his second week of camp!! Once he gets comfortable playing with these players and getting to know them on a football and on a personal player, he will be fine. If anything its almost like a humble move on his part to not go in there and tell players like tony richardson what to do.

I didn’t know barking out loud and praising is a trait of leadership? Isn’t this the same K.C. who sat behind 2 other QB’s who he couldn’t beat out, and until Ratliff was traded was going to compete with him for the starting job, isn’t this the same mature QB all of management was happy with when they tried to trade for Cutler? Lets get something straight if K.C. doesn’t win this thing out right, Sanchez will be the starter, barking or no, praising or no. This isn’t a competition to see who the starter will be, it is a competition to see if Sanchez can control the huddle until he matures more ala Flacco. As of now its a dead heat, and if that is true K.C.’s day’s riding the pine are just about to start all over again.

    Amen brother !!!!!!

  7. I agree with most of the thoughts written here, except the preaching is getting a little pathetic: “There is NO QUESTION he is a better QB than Clemens ever was ” – ahh no, actually, there IS a question, that’s why there is a competition and golden boy isn’t already named the starter. He probably isn’t NOW a better qb than clemens, although he almost certainly (let’s all pray) will be.
It’s called fearing the rookie, it’s called being realistic. Probably a lot of the same people now deifying the rook will be calling for his head if he plays like a rook in the regular season.

  8. I meant it’s NOT called fearing the rookie…

“There is NO QUESTION he is a better QB than Clemens ever was ”….

You misunderstood. That was to imply that when Clemens was Sanchez’s age coming out of college he was not as good as Sanchez is. And there is NO question about that. And I said there is no question he will be a better QB than Clemens ever will (and based on what weve seen out of both so far and comparing ages and experience in the NFL… thats a pretty safe prediction).

You guys can keep defending Clemens all you want, defend the “QB competition”, but the guy hasn’t won any of the ones hes already been in and in my mind you don’t declare him the victor of this competition unless it is flat out crystal clear, which is not.
