Is just me, or are they really trying to sell Ghoston to the fans ?
If he’s really playing well, and I hope he is, we’ll see it during the games and he’ll get plenty of playing time.

  2. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Just use your freakish strength and speed to tackle QB’s and RB’s.

I cant believe the range of opinions on VG’s play this summer. I have heard he is horrible to he is really showing up and making plays. We’ll find out tomorrow. He better cause some havoc going against the scrubs of the Rams in the 2nd and 3rd quarter

  3. avatar Pdubbs says:

It doesn’t make sense for him to totally suck …so he has to do something this year.

  4. avatar Frank says:

anyone know if the game will be on TV for those of us without NFL network?

  5. avatar AL says:

Realistically Gholston has 11 days of camp under his belt and he is showing some improvement according to the coaches and some media.

So lets hope over the next month he keeps getting better and over the course of those first four games starts showing us something.

  6. avatar Frank says:

never mind — looks like it’s on both CBS and SNY

petegolf99,they dont need to. Kid can play or he cant.I think their trying to figure which one out. As for his play, everyone is saying he’s improving. V.G needs to just learn some moves, he has zero. 2 things he got going for him power rush and open field tackling.

I thought this would actual be an interview with Vernon….which would be nice to see!

  9. avatar Brad says:

Stated this before- but he is learning a new defensive system again, so he might get off to a slow start or have a slow year. I am not expecting him to be a beast this year, but i will be very disappointed if he doesn’t get around 5 sacks this year or if he seems lost when he is on the field. When he was drafted, we were hoping for this guy to be a beast, and when Rex got here, we were hoping for him to turn into Suggs. The player that seems like this might happen to according to reports is Westerman and i cant wait to see him play. He can play DE, OLB, and working on ILB- so defenses wont know what he will be doing in our organized chaos defense- will he be rushing the QB or dropping back in coverage.

  10. avatar Bent says:

Every single criticism of Gholston so far has been “I didn’t notice him doing much” or “He didn’t make many plays”. I haven’t heard anyone say “He was on rollerskates” or “He looked lost” or “He was dominated in pass rushing drills” or “He missed a tackle”.

Say he does end up with 5 sacks, as Brad suggests, that means there will be at least 11 games when he doesn’t get a sack and I’m sure we’ll be hearing “Gholston did NOTHING again…what a bust” all year.

I’m just glad to hear that the defense looks good and he is a part of it, and not – from the sounds of it – any kind of weak link. One step at a time. Increased reps first, then increased tackle numbers, then hopefully he starts making a few impact plays along the way and hopefully the defense doesn’t miss a beat with him in there.

I got a very big chuckle out of Pdubbs explanation of how he thinks VG will do this year… lol

It doesn’t make sense for him to totally suck………..excellent!!

  12. avatar MSM says:

    Hahah… I agree… Pdubbs… that was great.

Its true, he can’t totally suck. I mean he was pretty nasty in college and we did have a bunch of professional scouts and FO people make the decision to draft him in the first round. I tend to believe that at least some of them know what they are talking about and can evaluate talent. I get the feeling he will be a momentum kinda guy. After the first sack it’ll free up his mind to get more. Its just getting that first one out of the way early. He sounds like a fragile mind, so the less he thinks, the better.

  13. avatar Davo says:

I’m sorry, I’m just not buying it. A week ago he was “the ghost” again, and Ryan wasn’t even addressing him in comments to the media (avoiding would be a better word), and now he’s not making a single mistake on special teams? 11 days? Seriously, this is a guy who couldn’t make special teams last year, and all it took was 11 days in training camp to rectify all that? Look all this tough talk and positivity better play out on the field real early, or Ryan will be an emperor without clothes pretty quickly.

  14. avatar BigKatFan says:

I really want to believe that he is improving and impressing, but i’m just gonna let the preseason decide for me

  15. avatar Bent says:

Davo – What do you mean by “he couldn’t make special teams last year”? VG played special teams all year, apart from when he was inactive and even recorded 9 tackles and recovered an onside kick.

Hutch made a big deal over the fact that Ryan didn’t mention Gholston, but he can’t mention all 80 players every day. I’m sure there were many other guys he didn’t mention too. Inferring that Ryan is disappointed with VG simply because he wasn’t “effusive in his praise” – Hutch’s words, not mine – is trying to find a story when there isn’t one.

The last thing Ryan said about Gholston was “Is it me, or is Gholston looking a lot better out there?” a few days ago. He obviously is making progress, but I’m sure if he doesn’t sack the QB on every other play once the preseason begins, people will still be saying he’s a bust. Let’s remember that anything he achieves this year is a step in the right direction.

  16. avatar simplysimon2 says:

I agree with MSM. Once he gets that 1st sack out of the way or a dramatic tackle for a loss, he’ll be fine. Confidence will go up and production will follow. At least that’s what I pray for, otherwise we’ve got great depth at his position, so the team won’t suffer only The Ghost’s dreams.

  17. avatar Ferraro41 says:

Frank…I think I saw the game is being re-broadcast at 11pm on SNY
