Here’s some highlights from the game last night. My favorites were:

  • Sanchez’s first pass
  • Watching Thomas Jones go vertical for a TD … is that his first like that as a Jet? Could Mangini have been a factor?
  • Keller proving us right. DUSTIN KELLER IS THE SECOND RECEIVER.
  • Shonn Greene’s long run
  • David Clowney’s Touchdown dance .. let’s see more of those!

    Best things to see:

-Sanchez looks good. Sharp passes, he looks more buff than i thought, hopefully he will be able to take some hits. Is there any doubt he will be the starter?

-Defense can bring pressure, but didnt play too well against the run. Without Kris Jenkins were in trouble.

-Clowney will be a good receiver!

  2. avatar levi says:

I agree we have to do better against the run. That was a great play action pass to Clowney. But I disagree he needs to work on that dance lol. I hope he gets lots of practice at them though.Sanchez looked great for the little we saw of him.

  3. avatar charleyjet says:

WOW. Now I’m not nominating him for Canton just yet, but when they got the ball on the seven yard line (on a penalty that the TV guys totally missed) I thought here comes a run, they’re not going to expose Sanchez on his first play from scrimmage. So what does he do but throw a perfect 40 yard pass into Clowney’s hands. I’m impressed.

  4. avatar Green Lantern #80 says:

    Im mad I doubted Clowney.
And we shouldn’t say our defense can’t stop the run without Big Jinx because Jackson is HUGE but he never got that far and when Wado got that huge run that was our 3rd string.

  5. avatar jimsopen says:

im not worried about our recievers at all…if somebody great falls in our lap, sure……but JCO, clowney, stuckey, keller, smith and oh, by the way, leon washington out of the back field will be just fine….thank you

anybody see kareem brown catching passes last night?>

oh…..and pretty good 1st NFL drive rooK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    the jetsies are baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaackkkk!!!!

    Bent:

    Hypothetical for you here:

If Gholston does nothing all preseason and guys like Cummings, Westerman, Trusnic, Woodhead and some other fringe guys are looking good, can they actually put Gholston on the practice squad or are there limitations on that and cap ramifications?

I’ve never thought to learn much about the practice squad and only know that other teams look to snipe players from it. Remember Kerry Jenkins, the guy on Tampa’s practice squad who JETS picked up and he started that week ( I think at RG)?

  7. avatar Green Lantern #80 says:

you people are going to really stop doubting Ghost.

  8. avatar Bent says:

Smizzle – No, you’d have to waive him to do that and eat a cap hit that they cannot afford.

He’ll be okay anyway, people are just expecting too much. I’ve now seen a bunch of highlights from the game and he looks a little better than he did at this point last year, which is all I expected. He was mainly going up against Jason Smith, who is no slouch. Yeah, he’s a rookie, but so would Gholston be if he didn’t come out early. Compared to Pace he didn’t look good at all, but then neither did Pace at the start of his second season.

    Other observations

    - The Gado TD was all on Ty Steinkuhler. Wow, they rode him back several yards. Jane McManus will probably try and sign him up for her roller derby team when he gets cut.
    - Ainge’s TD pass was entirely down to a blown coverage and without it he had just 98 yards passing in almost 3 quarters against 2nd and 3rd stringers. Brett Ratliff this was not. I liked seeing Stanley Daniels pulling on the play fake though.
    - Rob Turner’s block 20 yards downfield on Brad Smith’s reverse was great and he looked good in pass protection
    - Shonn Greene showed some burst. Who was it who said he’ll just run into the line every time?
    - Paul Raymond looked like Luis Castillo on that punt. (Ouch).
    - Trusnik was beaten for the TD because he didn’t get his head round, but stayed with the guy well
    - Murrell showed some wheels on the TD run, chasing Gado
    - You know who Sanchez reminded me of on that pass? The last time I saw a high pressure bomb down the sideline placed as perfectly as that it was on a key fourth down against Notre Dame…by Matt Leinart. (In the game when Reggie Bush carried him over the line for the winning TD).

  9. avatar HAGS says:

Seems like Clemens has been a second string quarterback for a while..he is GOOD at it…We payed alot of money for Sanchez and it was well spent…I thought Sanchez might get a shot at second half but Clemens fumble and sacks early on helped Sanchez shine on the field much earlier…everyone on this blog has been praising Sanchez and I am pretty sure Rex Ryan made HIS decision last night on the STARTING quarterback…Defense looked great also…Can’t wait for a playoff season..JETS JETS JETS!!!!

  10. Sanchez really impress me, this guy has a good arm, no doubt he will start the opening season if he plays like this

  11. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

Paul Raymond, WR ensured that he will be among 1st cut with his uninspiring play. Dwight Lowery took a huge step backwards at CB and he wont’t be returning punts anytime soon.
Whoever said David Claowney is a one game wonder is eating his words right about now. He will be JETS #2 receiver this season. He just needs a QB with an arm to reach him. That means Sanchez will be JETS starting QB at Houston.
First team Defense played really well. I am worried about Gholston. He doesn’t have the fire to be a great football player. Bad draft choice Tanny. I am less worried about replacing Ellis than I am Pace. Gholston is not the man. Is it Westerman?

  12. avatar Green Lantern #80 says:

you people are going to stop doubting Ghost.

  13. avatar Nikolas says:

If Sanchez ends up to be the QB that he projected to be in that teaser series, this team will be in good hands for many years to come. He looked like Tom Brady did in his debut with the Pats. I was impressed.

  14. avatar Wise Old Jet Fan says:

Gholston is exactly where he should be at this point of his transition to OLB, progressing slowly. He should be ready to step in as a starter by year three and may finally develop into a good pass rusher by year four.

Problem is he was drafted way to high for a player that needed to change positions and had an inconsistant career in a minor league conferance (Jets really need to re-assign their scouts away from the Little 10). Then he missed training camp.

Horrible pick, might be a decent player down the road, probably for someone else in a 4-3. Think James Farrior in reverse.

  15. avatar Wise Old Jet Fan says:

    Clowney is a gamebreaker.

Some guys are better gameday players than practice players. Those guys will never get a chance with a Mangini type coach. Hopefully they just plug him in as the soon to be number one WR and forget about the others.

Stucky is a nice slot and backup.

Brad Smith, I am still not sure. Wright looks like he should get reps instead of Smith.

Overall, not worried about WR or TE or backup OLine as much this morning as I was yesterday. Thought the anon TE’s blocked ok, and Brown may be a nice number two eventually. The backup OLine as a whole is not up to standard, but if one or two needs to step in with the starters think they can survive for a few games.

My biggest concern is CB after Revis, I have never been impressed with Lowery, he is just too slow to play CB in the NFL. If Shepard gets hurt or just fails to return to his glory days, the side opposite Revis will be attacked all day. And if Revis every gets hurt, goodbye season.

  16. avatar RKNYC says:

Gholston was lining up at DE on many downs it seemed to me. They are using him in multiple spots. I think some more seasoning and he’ll be a decent pro. They may have to redo his contract to save some money if he doesn’t really produce. He was facing up with OL regularly and got a good push while the runs seemed to go away from him anyway.

Clemens looked fine and if he starts I’d be okay with that. I don’t know how the fumble is a highlight, more like a lowlight, but it was hardly his fault. And the pressure up the middle that he escaped should show some people that he doesn’t have happy feet anymore until he needs them.

I think Sanchez will wind up being the starter though his arm is just better. And he also is more fleet afoot so all he needs is NFL experience to get good.

  17. avatar James in TN says:

Gholston- adj. 1. Of or relating to overreaching for greatness only to be sadly mistaken. 2. Hype no heart.

    syn.-Bust.

see Fool’s Gold, Fake Rolex, Ponsi Scheme

    Webster’s , who knew?

  18. avatar RKNYC says:

I agree about Lowery too. He is good underneath but can’t go downfield. He is also a bit small but he’s tough as nails and I hope he can get better. I think he’s been way over-hyped.

  19. avatar DSmizzle says:

    Wise Old Jet Fan:

The Big 10 is an absolute NFL FACTORY brotha. They haven’t been good in Bowl games the last few years, often being beat by teams with a type of spread offense that isn’t used in the NFL.

I’m not harping on Gholston for any other reason than pointing out that it sucks that his contract is going to mean a decent player who has played better and shown more upside will be cut (Cummings, Trusnik, Westerman, etc.).

Might have allowed the JETS to keep Coleman if they didn’t have to keep a player on the roster who is only there due to the size of his contract.

I do hope he develops, but I am not holding out hope because I’ve only seen ‘improvement’ insofar as he apparently doesn’t suck as much as last year.

That’s what I find most disappointing – some promising or useful player won’t make the team so that a guy who the OPTIMISTS hope will be a decent pass-rusher in his 4th season (next year).

  20. avatar RKNYC says:

Well Calvin Pace will be sorely missed but he too didn’t show is skills until his 3rd year. Sometimes that is just the way it is. I hope Gholston just needs time and experience.

He did drop back quite frequently too. He certainly doesn’t look as lost and is reacting much more quickly.

  21. avatar Jeff says:

I wonder if Gholston could restructure his deal, because of he cant crack the starting lineup or beat UDFA’s then he has to bite the bullet and lower his salary. Can’t pay a guy $40 million to be a backup

  22. avatar Bent says:

Jeff – In theory he could at the end of this season, but there is no way he would ever reduce the guaranteed money due to him. He has a lot of incentives in his contract so if he does nothing he will not meet these and won’t earn the full value of it anyway (example: he missed a 3.5m incentive last year).

Murrell and Westerman aren’t beating him anyway (even though Murrell, with an extra year of college and an extra year of NFL experience perhaps should be). Both have been a pleasant surprise, but in camp and in yesterday’s game, they haven’t been any better than he was (and they got most of their reps against third stringers). People have just been noticing them only when they make a play, whereas with Gholston they are watching and picking apart everything he does and expecting him to beat his man on every play.

In the event that he doesn’t continue to improve, he’ll just collect the guaranteed money, miss out on most of his incentives and get replaced when the Jets can afford the cap hit (not for a couple of years, yet). There’s not a lot they can do about it, but Gholston has nothing to be gained from restructuring, but everything to gain by continuing to work hard.

  23. avatar hunterx1 says:

hello there guys, lifelong packer fan here, and i just wanted to let ya know how nice it is to hear people speak about favre they way he SHOULD be spoken of. hes a liar and an attention whore. he has sucked since ’97. he has backhandedly insulted every team mate he has ever had. everyone STILL idolizes the retard here in wisc. unreal. im real sorry how it worked out for you guys, but im sure as hell not sorry his circus is finally out of town. imagine having a festering sliver in your football for 16 years. not f’n cool man. BUT…… as far as the jets go….if they hadnt gotten burned by the snow “flake” and got such a horrid taste in thier mouth from it, they might not have pulled the trigger on sanchez….so in the end it still is gonna work out for you guys. also a big ten fan, and you guys scored heavily with shonn greene. freakin awesome back, maybe not gonna take anything 90 yards, but hes like 235 on a 5-10,5-11 frame and hes very agile. runs behind his pads. i think you will love him, i was hopin the pack would take him.

  24. avatar Ghost On says:

I agree with Green Lantern. People will stop doubting Gholston. He’ll be fine. And while he won’t make us forget Pace, he won’t be diasaster personified.

I’m actually more worried about Sanchez, more than ever. Wouldn’t it be something if the highlight of his NFL career was his first preseason game? I’m sure he’ll be okay, but one preseason drive against the Rams doesn’t do much for me.

And Bent, your great comparison to Leinart made me that much more afraid……
