Roster News: Nobody Loves Raymond

by Bent on August 15th, 2009 at 6:24 pm

Quick roster update from Hutch following last night’s game: The Jets have waived WR Paul Raymond and QB Chris “Harvard” Pizzotti and signed G Dennis Conley.

Don’t expect Conley to provide any immediate depth. He’s an undrafted rookie from a small-school (Hampton).

Ryan expressed regret that he was unable to get Pizzotti in the game yesterday, but Erik Ainge’s performance has all but assured that the Jets will enter the season with only three QBs (!) on the roster. Raymond made some noise in last year’s preseason, but cost the Jets the game with a bad muffed punt against the Rams.

Listen up guys and listen good…Rex Ryan does not like to lose. Ya got that?

Got it and I like it ! Muff a punt and you are outa here. I like the fact that if you are on the fence as far as making the team—don’t screw up. Rex has the right attitude—winning is everything in pro sports. Refreshing for a Jet coach.

  2. avatar Corey Griffin says:

You beat me too it, damnit. I owe you a cupcake — or something.

  3. avatar Bent says:

Thanks! That will go well with one of the legendary Griffin Tailgate Burgers.

Joe P: Lowery also muffed a punt (and fumbled another) and Leon fumbled a kickoff. I’m glad he uses some discretion in applying the rule!

Manish Mehta reports that, other than Pizzotti, the only position player not to see action was TE J’Nathan Bullock.

  4. avatar NorCal says:

I expect the Patriots to pick up at least one of these guys, just to find out a little about our “new” attitude.

  5. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

Earlier today I predicted that Raymond would be among the first players cut. Who knew it was going to be today.

  6. avatar E. Weeks says:

    I’ll take the cupcake.

I’m not surprised that Raymond was let go but Pizzotti was surprising especially since he didn’t see any action at all. I would have thought they would would have him at least go in for a couple of series against the Ravens before dropping him. Let’s hope Ainge can maintain his standing as third QB.

  7. avatar Bent says:

Maybe Ed(itor) should get a cupcake because he predicted it in advance. Then again, who didn’t think he was getting cut when he did that? Perhaps Corey should bake a whole batch!

I’m surprised they didn’t keep Pizzotti just to take most of the reps in the Bollinger Bowl (the last preseason game) and keep the active QBs healthy.

Conspiracy theory: Maybe they actually thought Ainge was not good enough and are about to bring in a veteran so Ainge can take one for the team in the Bollinger Bowl.

  8. avatar Michael M says:

Hey Bent, be nice to Brooks! Isn’t he a starter now? (so what if it’s in the UFL)

  9. avatar neauone says:

Kellen Clemens has to be hearing footsteps forget about him losing the starting job. Ainge has better pocket presence and moves the team better. Clemens may find himself odd man out or traded. Out of the 3QB’s K.C. looked the least polished.

  10. avatar seanmac31 says:

Pizzoti’s cause isn’t helped any by having Brad Smith as an emergency quarterback option.

  11. avatar Bent says:

Calling it the Bollinger Bowl isn’t a slight on Brooks (although I admit that I have used him as a punchline many times), it’s actually a tribute to him. A few years ago in that fixture (the week 4 Eagles clash where 90% of it is third string v third string), Bollinger threw 3 TDs in the last 7 minutes to lead the Jets to an incredible come from behind win and in honor of that, it’s been the Bollinger Bowl ever since. It’s probably the nicest thing I’ve ever done for him. Maybe I’ll root for his UFL team too.

Note: The Giants game is the “Vanilla Bowl”, because it’s always really low scoring because neither team opens the playbook.

  12. avatar Bent says:

I didn’t even consider that, seanmac (maybe because I am not a fan of Smith’s arm)…but it didn’t stop the Jets from carrying 4 last year.

I wonder if Smith will get to play QB in the Bollinger Bowl this year? He has in the past (and it’s always fun).

  13. avatar whit75 says:

I think they still my like Pizzoti and maybe they didn`t want to expose him to another team possibly. I think if a quarterback goes down or they trade Clemens they will bring him back .This way Sanchez doesn`t have to be looking over his shoulder if he makes a bad play.

  14. avatar michael says:

No way they trade Clemens… his value is at rock bottom right now as he can’t even beat out the rook. He’s solid for a backup, and that’s where he will remain.

  15. avatar jcc says:

It’s kinda sad to see both of these guys cut today because Paul Raymond was an Ivy boy, too. He went to Brown. Apparently Rex doesn’t like the smarty-pants players.

  16. avatar Green Lantern #80 says:

IM Envisioning a Magazine cover saying “WHOS A BUST” after Darko Millic ( New York Knicks) and Ghost both have big years in New York.

  17. avatar BigKatFan says:

kind of predictable cuts. hopefully the remaining guys improve

  18. avatar Michael M. says:

thanks Bent – just goofing along with you

  19. avatar benny says:

This is not about Pizotti or Raymond, although I wish them well.

Maybe I missed it, but saw nothing here about Baker’s performance. 2 touchdowns, nice blocking, solid route running, sure glad he’s a JET….oh wait.

Can someone please remind me why keeping him would have been so God aweful?

  20. avatar Kyle says:

He parked in Woody’s spot and was hated by him ever since.

  21. avatar jcjets says:

i actually thought Clemens played pretty well..the turnover came off that blindside sack! Although I do have a sneaking suspicion that a star QB would somehow be able to feel that pressure and step up or tuck the ball away.

  22. avatar TJBfan (twitter @infresco4) says:

Benny he would have cost us alot of money…not worth it. Even if he does well with the Patriots hes got Tom Brady at QB…..That made even Kyle Brady look good at times.

I dont doubt the call of releasing baker, just think they should have had more depth before doing so…I mean its a move they totally saw coming.

As for Raymond….I totally forgot about him with J Co, Stuckey, Clowney, Smith, Wright and Davis. That is until his one play of the game was a muffed punt that cost us the game….he’s been a name around here so maybe practice squad in the future but that’s it and that’s all.

  23. avatar SackDance99 says:

Maybe here’s why Baker is a Pat. They both had 3 receptions, Keller had 52 yards and Baker had 22 yards. Keller had a 17.3 avg, Baker had a 7.3 avg. Keller is a weapon. Baker’s just the 3rd option in an offense where Randy Moss and Welker draw all the attention at the goal line.

  24. avatar James in TN says:

Well, Rex can’t make perfect moves all the time. Pizzotti should have been given a chance. I can’t believe Ainge is still with the team. I just hope Sanchez and Clemens can stay healthy.

  25. avatar Ghost On says:

    Anybody catch Elam in action?

Rodgers went 5 of 10 for 102 yards and completed a 53-yard TD pass to Donald Driver by stepping up in the pocket on the opening drive. Driver initially looked over his left shoulder on the long third-down pass, then swiveled right to catch the ball in stride past safety Abram Elam, who was late rotating over on the play.

  26. avatar Bent says:

Now, come on Ghost On, you know as well as I do that one play in one preseason game does not mean that much.

Get back to me when he is routinely being burned during regular season games and marginalizing the abilities of his elite teammates.

    Oh.

  27. avatar Kyle says:

    The Browns look terrible.

  28. avatar AKA...Drew says:

The Browns did look horrible…Ratliff looked even worse.

This trade that everyone was screaming about ( me intially ) might go down as the greatest in Jets history. Elam, Coleman and Ratty and swapping for Filthy??

I have no complaints on anything from Friday other than the complete no show “again” by our boy Gholsten? The light might not ever go on for this kid guys…We might just have to except it

  29. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    James in TN??

Did you ever consider that maybe nust maybe Ainge can be a decent backup QB? I mean I know he let the legion on UT fans down by not being P Manning ( who never won anything or beat UF)

I liked the kid comiong out and thought he did a pretty good job with an awful team espeially hif offense his senior year.

Get over it bud. The guy is our 3rd dtringer…If he has to play we are in trouble no matter who our 3rd is

  30. avatar James in TN says:

If Ainge succeeds I have no problem with it. I just would have liked to have seen pizzoti.

  31. avatar SackDance99 says:

I thought Pizzotti was great in college and I only saw one practice (at Hofstra), but he looked terrible. I wanted to see him in a game, too. He’s a big kid with a strong arm and he’s smart. I hope he stays with football because he could develop, but he’s a project. Raymond, at least, had a chance, but muffed it.
