Buzz: Faneca out for preseason?

Pro-Bowl LG Alan Faneca had surgery today to repair his broken finger. It was a routine procedure, but it could still knock Faneca out of the final 3 preseason games.

Pro Bowl LG Alan Faneca underwent surgery to repair the broken middle finger on his left hand and he definitely won’t play this week against the Ravens, according to Rex Ryan. The coach hinted that Faneca could miss the last three games, but he was confident that the senior member of the offensive line will be ready for the regular-season opener in Houston.

The offensive line, arguably the strength of the team, is in a bad way right now. C Nick Mangold (knee) and RT Damien Woody (concussion) still are sidelined. I talked to Woody for the first time since his injury. He went home to New Jersey after it happened six days ago, and he didn’t even attend Friday night’s game, which tells me this was no minor concussion.

This was everyone’s concern heading into the season — a severe lack of depth on the offensive line. The young replacements looked okay Friday, but they’ll have to be much better if they’re called into regular season duty. A battered and mis-shaped OLine is the kind of thing that can ruin a season with a veteran QB, let alone a rookie.

  1. I remember seeing OL playing with broken arms. I dont think playing with a broken finger will be a problem.

  2. My only concern is the whole “chemistry” aspect, that if Faneca will be out for the preseason, he and D’Brick may not be on the same page the minute he comes back. They may need a game or 2 to “gel” as a unit again and play at their best.

  3. Better now than during the regular season. Even if he reinjured it, they’d just give him a club to wield.

  4. Corey, the replacements looked horrid. They almost got Clemens killed on his first series and they were inept run blocking the entire night. One play to Shonn and one end around accounted for 62 yards out of the 102 total. They averaged just over 1.5 yards per carry on the other 26 plays. 1.5 ypc.

They held the line for Sanchez’ four throws (at least one on first down). But 1.5 yards per carry with three solid backs on a run oriented team ain’t gonna get er done.
