News: Jets sign third punter (UPDATE)

Apparently, Rex is not happy with the punting duties. The Jets worked out punter Ken Parrish earlier Sunday and then proceeded to sign the former police officer — and Philadelphia Eagle.

Parrish, a 6-foot-1, 210-pounder from East Stroudsburg, will likely kick on Monday night against the Ravens.

Coach Rex Ryan will livid with the performance of punters Reggie Hodges and T.J. Conley in Friday night’s 23-20 preseason loss to the Rams and vowed during his morning news conference that he would find a punter from somewhere before the season opener.

Hodges averaged 49.0 yards on two punts and Conley averaged 38.5 yards on two punts. Although Hodges has good numbers, Ryan pointed out that numbers alone don’t tell the story. Hodges’ first punt rolled at least 10 yards and was fumbled by the Eagles’ returner as he tried to pick it up.

Where’s Ben Graham when you need him?

UPDATE: Lisa Zimmerman reports the Jets have waived punter T.J. Conley to make room for Parrish. The team also waived TE project J’Nathan Bullock and signed LB Joshua Mauga.

  1. Isn’t it kinda funny, 12 billion legs, approx, in the world…and we can’t find one good one among them.

  2. i said it the entire offseason.
Our team is a running offense and defensive minded which means we’ll be playing field position ball a lot.
This is one thing that can really hurt us this upcoming season.

  3. Did Hodges get cut to make room ???

  4. Hutch mentioned that it was unclear if they released Hodges or Conley. I personally think its a toss up between Conley and Hodges at this point seeing that Ryan was livid with the both of them.

  5. It is a very good sign, that Rex realizes the importance of field position. I hope he can find someone who can have some consistency. I agree with Ronnie — if you are playing a field position game, you have to have a solid punter.

  6. When Parcells took over a team ths first thing he did was concentrate on special teams. The great ones know that it’s truly a third of the game. I doubt this escapes Rex.

  7. Per Cimini:
    OUT: TE J’Nathan Bullock, P T.J. Conley
IN: LB Joshua Mauga, P Ken Parrish

  8. Mauga is interesting. Played in a 3-4 system in college and has great size, 4.6 speed and was a productive tackler with lots of experience. He had a knee injury in 2007. Could be a practice squad candidate.

Bullock’s days were numbered when he didn’t play against the Rams.

  9. [...] The Jets Blog has a good update with links about this move. [...]

  10. If this new punter doesn’t work, the Jets should bring in the loser of the Packers and Jags punter battles. Two from this list will become available: Durant Brooks, Adam Podlesh, Jason Kapinos, Steve Weatherford.

Kapinos was already briefly a Jet at the end of the 2007 season. Since Hodges and Ben Graham have each had a second chance, maybe he deserves one too. Perhaps Eric Wilbur and Waylon Prather do as well (and T J Conley).

    Not exactly rich pickings.

  11. Another year and coaching staff and still no effing punter resolution???

Please tell me how Mike Westoff can be the greatest ST coach in the league and he has no idea how to find a decent punter since he has been here?? Dosent kicking have a lot to do with specials?? WTF?

  12. There’s also the Saint’s punter discard, very likely Glenn Pakulak. He did well for them late last year.

In 2009, only three punters were drafted, two in the 5th and one in the 7th round, according to NFL Draft Tracker. NO traded up to get their guy.

Chris Miller of Ball State might well deserve a look-see if the latest signing doesn’t work out.

  13. They should have drafted a punter, but of course practice squad material Matt Slauson was more important than someone that would actually contribute.

One of my pet peeves, I analyzed this last season, of the top 2/3 of punters in the league something like 65% were DRAFTED, a higher rate than kickers.

Not saying you take one early, but a fifth round pick on a punter is a very good investment based on the facts.
