They should have drafted a punter, but of course practice squad material Matt Slauson was more important than someone that would actually contribute.

One of my pet peeves, I analyzed this last season, of the top 2/3 of punters in the league something like 65% were DRAFTED, a higher rate than kickers.

Not saying you take one early, but a fifth round pick on a punter is a very good investment based on the facts.

There's also the Saint's punter discard, very likely Glenn Pakulak. He did well for them late last year.

'New Orleans Saints punters trying to put one foot ahead of the other"
http://www.nola.com/saints/index.ssf/2009/08/one_battle_that_will_be_for_ke.html

In 2009, only three punters were drafted, two in the 5th and one in the 7th round, according to NFL Draft Tracker. NO traded up to get their guy.

Chris Miller of Ball State might well deserve a look-see if the latest signing doesn't work out.

If this new punter doesn't work, the Jets should bring in the loser of the Packers and Jags punter battles. Two from this list will become available: Durant Brooks, Adam Podlesh, Jason Kapinos, Steve Weatherford.

Kapinos was already briefly a Jet at the end of the 2007 season. Since Hodges and Ben Graham have each had a second chance, maybe he deserves one too. Perhaps Eric Wilbur and Waylon Prather do as well (and T J Conley).

Not exactly rich pickings.

Mauga is interesting. Played in a 3-4 system in college and has great size, 4.6 speed and was a productive tackler with lots of experience. He had a knee injury in 2007. Could be a practice squad candidate.

Bullock's days were numbered when he didn't play against the Rams.

When Parcells took over a team ths first thing he did was concentrate on special teams. The great ones know that it's truly a third of the game. I doubt this escapes Rex.

It is a very good sign, that Rex realizes the importance of field position. I hope he can find someone who can have some consistency. I agree with Ronnie -- if you are playing a field position game, you have to have a solid punter.
