News: Shaun Ellis Suspended for One Game

The NFL has ruled that the rumors are true and that in fact, Shaun Ellis has been suspended without pay for the team’s first regular-season game and fined an additional $100,000 for violating the NFL Substances of Abuse Policy.

Ellis’ suspension for the Jets’ first regular-season game will begin on Saturday, September 5. He is eligible to return to the Jets’ active roster on Monday, September 14 following the team’s September 13 opener against the Houston Texans.

  1. 100K could get you alot of “substance abuse”

  2. This points to my concern all along.

So, DeVito can step in for Ellis, perhaps. But who steps in for DeVito as the rotation guy? It’ll be hot in Houston on Labor Day. Where do these guys get a breather? What will we have left in the fourth quarter?

Our One’s we can throw out there and they’ll stack up with anyone in the league, IMHO.

But as we saw Friday night, our Two’s and Three’s, especially our Three’s, look more like Practice Squad hopefuls.

This is too brutal a game to fantasize about our going through another year fairly unscathed by major injuries as we did last year. Guys will go down.

As our replacement possibilities on either line stand currently, I fear there will merely be a uniform there that’s just an empty spot for the other team to exploit all afternoon. However, our skill spots on either side should prove to weather injuries reasonably well, since there seems to be adequate guys to step up there and hold the fort.

Rex had reason to be pissed about that second half. It was brutal. Our Two/Three’s had trouble with St. Louis’ Two/Threes. How will our Two/Three’s possibly handle NE’s One’s?

We’re mighty, but we’re wafer thin.

  3. wow, its gunna be hard watching these guys on game 1, offense and defense will both struggle, unless something unexpected happens, like Sanchez?

  4. one more reason to start clemens on day 1. if the guys up top have the opportunity to throw clemens under the truck, they’ll snatch it right up!

  5. Its up to Sanchez in week one…make it rain kid.

  6. Hey Shawn, that was one expensive joint huh? WAKE UP!

  7. I think this makes it more likely a guy like Matt Kroul who played well against the rams may make the team.

If Douglas,Jenkins and Devito start in houston than Green and Pouha will spell them. I think another D-lineman makes the team.

  8. so Ellis, Pace, who else we missing for Week 1?

  9. Interview with Chuck Smith who is working with Gholston and the other linemen

    http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/multimedia/audio/137-jets-radio-8-16-09-camp-interview-with-chuck-smith

  10. @Row: Gholston, but he’s been missing for over a year now. Can we make Defensive Loitering a new penalty?

  11. There’s a good interview with Chuck Smith on the Jets web site, he is working with Gholston and the other linemen, It’s worth a listen,

  12. Effing fantastic……

Missing Pace and Ellis is going to hurt against a stout offense like Houston… not good

  13. Clemens looks like the same bland no-talent that he did when they threw Pennington under the bus. The only reason to start Clemens would be to lull opposing teams into a false (or justified) sense of security.

  14. i think Clemens has talent, but its strictly as a game manager. I dont think hes much of a risk taker. weve seen him throw it deep but really only when the receiver is open by a mile (flicker play from pittsburgh game two years back) or when the games on the line and hes leading the 2 minute offense (baltimore game). either way, he doesnt turn the game up at any other given point in time, and we need someone ready to score for us any time.

i dont see any big plays coming from him (obvious from the st louis game). Im confortable with him as our back up, but anything more would be a sin. Sanchez has the swagger to match Rex.

  15. Ellis is a freakin’dummy. We need to smarter players on this team.

  16. Thanks JayM…that should be essential listening for all Jets fans.

  17. I’m a lot more worried about missing Pace, he was a beast against the Rams and may be the guy, along with Harris, who benefits the most from the new defense. The rotation of DeVito and maybe that kid Zach Potter can hold the fort for Ellis, but Ghost or Murrell don’t look like they can fill in for 4 whole games…maybe Cummings gets some reps? It’s a problem.

  18. i thought houston was a dome controlled temp?

  20. Sack,

I want to see more of this Potter guy. He is huge and was playing with emotion. It would be great to find a diamond in the rough.

  21. @ JayM

thanks for posting that interview. it was very interesting and deserves it’s own post…great insight into the art of becoming a good pass rusher

  22. Zach Potter…yet another possible part-time tight end!

“…Potter had a standout prep career at Creighton Prep, where he helped the Junior Jays to the Class A state title as a senior. Potter was a two-way standout, starring at both tight end and defensive end … Offensively, he caught 24 passes for 501 yards and a pair of touchdowns.”

To make up for the loss of J’Nathen we learn that:

“Potter also starred in basketball, averaging 19 points and 11 rebounds per game as a center, and led the Junior Jays to the Class A state title game as a senior. He was a first-team all-state selection by both of the state’s major newspapers.”

Now, if he could also long-snap, he’d probably be guaranteed a roster spot.

  23. we are building, but we just don’t have the depth to be a championship contender. look at all pittsburgh. they drafted mendenhall and sweed with their first 2 picks last year, and they didn’t even play!! and they still won the superbowl. every year, we depend on our picks to save the season!! sanchez or bust!! i’m a believer, but if we want to be a serious contender, year in and year out, we need more depth on this team. i think that’s obvious to everyone.

  24. alex,

i agree with you on the depth, but this team is not in rebuilding mode, we’re a win now team. most of our best players are getting old, so its a do or die situation. if we were rebuilding, we wouldnt have traded all our picks away. we gotta win now, cause we’re not stacked on young talent.

  25. Potter is 6-7, 280 lbs., that’s perfect DE size. If he actually had the quickness to be a good basketball player and TE and fills out that frame a bit, he could be a real sleeper. Thanks for the info Moyvore.

  26. alex,

Mendenhall was injured and Sweed did what he was supposed to, light a fire under Santonio Holmes. IMO, Sweed’s no better than Clowney, who looks more NFL-ready.

  27. That Chuck Smith interview was great, and it is encouraging to think that Vernon is and will be progressing nicely over the coarse of the next two years.

Yo Chucky, the Hall of Fame called….they want their list of great Def. Lineman back ! lol

  28. greene… how are most of our best players getting old? Im curious.

Brick, Mangold, Revis, Lowery, Leon, Harris, Sanchez… we are pretty stacked with young talent I’d say, no?

  29. Sack – I don’t know if you saw, but Sweed had a couple of great catches in the Steelers-Cards preseason game. He should make a leap this year in Nate Washington’s place. However, if (the much cheaper) Clowney can do anything like as good (or perhaps even better) then that will justify not drafting another wide receiver this year.

  30. The Jets currently have 46 players on the roster with 3 or fewer years of NFL service. When final rosters are in, I’m guessing that the Jets will have one of the youngest teams in the NFL. And, MSM left out Keller, Shonn Greene, and Clowney, who could with Sanchez and Leon be part of a very young core of offensive skill position players.

  31. Sack… that was dumb… how could I forget our best player in Keller. HE IS SOOOO NASTY

  32. Let’s look at the other side of that coin. He makes a reasonable point that some of the players are old, so how many of the key guys on this team are going to need to be replaced for them to remain competitive* over the next few years? (* providing the young guys continue to develop as we hope).

    - The whole defensive line (arguably Devito could fill one spot and then maybe someone else will emerge)
    - Faneca and Woody (again maybe some of the young guys, such as Turner could step in)
    - Jones (arguably this has already been addressed with Greene)
    - Richardson (hopefully Caulcrick can fill this spot)

That’s at most 7 and maybe as few as 2 or 3. Everyone else has a good few years left in them. If this team is good enough to contend, I think they should be able to fill all those needs over the next year or two. If this year proves that the team still has other needs (if none of the WRs step up, for example), then staying in contention might be tougher, but “they have to win now” seems a bit of an overreaction.

If that was their sole rationale behind the Sanchez move (which I doubt), then that wasn’t particularly smart. It might still pay off though, anyway.

  33. Bent,

I like Sweed, but IMO he has the same problem as Clowney…drops. Clowney did lead the AFC in receiving yards last pre-season, so I just think Clowney’s a little ahead in the maturation process, but I want to see how Clowney plays against starting CBs. Sweed did show that he can get open deep in the NFL (even if he drops the pass) and he has good size. Clowney still hasn’t shown that he can get open deep (because he had so few plays last regular season), but I think Clowney has enough speed to do so. All in all, I’d take Sweed over Clowney for the 2010 season, but I think Clowney can out-perform Sweed in 2009. I guess that’s a long way of saying that I wasn’t dissing Sweed as much as praising Clowney, who I think has the tools to be a legit NFL deep threat.

  34. Bent,

I think the DL age is more of a long-term issue because guys like Jenkins are way too scarce and would take a high draft pick to obtain, as would a good replacement for Ellis…thank heavens for free agency!

The OL, IMO, is the easiest to bolster. RT is an easy position to fill and if the Jets decided to draft the no. 1 LG prospect, whoever that is, they probably could do that in the late first round (for example, Steve Hutchinson was the 17th pick and Faneca was the 26th). While I’m not a big fan of drafting OL in the first round, OG is as safe a first round pick as you can get, with 4 of the 6 OGs drafted in the first round from 2000-2007 making the Pro Bowl and the two that haven’t (Ben Grubbs and Kendall Simmons) are good players.

I think Greene can replace Jones, but RB is the easiest offensive skill position to draft and plenty of 2nd, 3rd or later round RBs have been good recently…the list is literally too long to mention. And, good RBs hit free agency every year.

Richardson is a great FB and let’s hope that Caulcrick can replace him, but FB is another easy position to fill…decent FBs hit the FA market all the time and decent ones can even be picked up as UDFAs.

So, if I were Rex, next 1st round I would put DL as the first priority, but if the best DL candidates are gone, draft an LG. Later in the draft, pick up a mammoth RT and from now through next season (assuming Caulcrick doesn’t pan out), look for a FB, esp. on the waiver wire.

  35. are we a bunch of drug addicts now!! im mean come on man.. all of these suspension are becoming stupid and it all falls on the head coach lets go ryan this is not good can anyone remember when a jets got hit for drugs in the last five years and dam how many more in the next 3 weeks

  36. kixworld,

Ellis was suspended from last year (MANGINI’S WATCH).

  37. A lot of this discussion has gotten drawn into future replacements and longevity issues.

The point remains that our talent level in 2009 falls off a cliff if any of our first team OL or DL goes down. The angsting over covering Pace’s spot is a perfect example. Likewise, the Jets replace Jenkins with a revolving door with an ‘enter’ sign. The OL is also as thin.

The LBs have some depth, but how much of the air comes out of the balloon if Scott goes down for any length of time?

The QB fight is winding down at this point, and it is half the concern at the moment as is the development of the Two’s and Three’s on either lines and at LB.

Here’s a request for those of you who are going to Cortland or the Jets Facility later this week and taking photos, tweeting, commenting, etc. — along with the sexy QB, WR and punter races, might you cast an eye to the backup guys who normally stay incognito, as Bent pointed out a while ago. They may prove to be the most important part of this team’s makeup by the time this season is over and done with.

It’d be nice to follow their development (or lack of same) along the way.

  38. i would put Gholston in for Ellis and Jamaal Westerman in a OLB for pace. then when Ellis is back rotate Gholston and Westerman at OLB

  39. rules is rules.

  40. all the young talent most people just said can be nullified with our depthless and aging oline. “win or die” situation may be have been an overreaction, but “rebuilding” is definitely not what the jets were trying to do when they only drafted 3 players from the draft, and only 1 being from the first day.
