News: Jets sign another Punter

By E. Weeks on 28. Aug, 2009

It seems that Ken Parrish failed to win over Ryan during his time at punter while in Baltimore. The position has been nagging Ryan for quite a while now and the Jets continue to search for Mr. Right signing yet another punter while dropping the newly signed Parrish.

The New York Jets have claimed punter Glenn Pakulak off waivers from New Orleans, and waived punter Ken Parrish and linebacker Josh Mauga.

Pakulak — (Pack-AH-lack) — averaged 47.7 yards per punt in the last eight games of the season for the Saints before being waived on Aug. 17. He has had brief stints with several other NFL teams and has played in NFL Europe.

I certainly feel bad for these guys bouncing everywhere like rubber balls but the Jets need to focus on keeping Mark Sanchez protected, scoring the necessary points to win the game and of course defending the ball. The punter can be a potential difference maker and it is important that the Jets find someone whom they can constantly rely upon. Hopefully Pakulak will be able to set himself apart from Hodges and actually stay on the team for more than a few days.

Good information…but a short field would be good for Sanchez to have. Just sayin’.

I previously suggested he would probably be the best available punter when the Saints had to cut him.

This from the Saint’s website (only now available through the Google cache):

2008 – Signed by the Saints, Oct. 29, and handled punting and holder duties for the final eight contests…Punted 24 times for 1,144 yards (47.7 avg.) and placed three inside the 20 with only two touchbacks…Made NFL regular season debut at Atlanta, Nov. 9, averaging 48.3 yards on three punts and making a special teams tackle…Notched a 49.4 average on five punts, with a career-long 70-yarder at Tampa Bay, Nov. 30…Punted three times for an average of 50.7 yards with one inside the 20 vs. Atlanta, Dec. 7…Dropped two kicks inside the 20 at Chicago, Dec. 11…Awarded a game ball by Coach Sean Payton following victory at Detroit, Dec. 21

He also holds for place kicks.

There’s also this story about Pakulak and the punter the Saints traded up for (very cheaply).

I was hoping the Jets would also try to get someone exceptional. Now merely competent would be a relief.

i think this is very important. we need decent field position. it’s amazing. as we get older and watch more football, we get to see every aspect of the game, and how important each position is. hopefully, we can hit on one of these guys. i can’t imagine watching hodges the whole year. he will drive me nuts!!

if size of pipes correlates at all with yards/punt and hangtime, we may just be OK with this guy. ’cause hodges sure as hell ain’t the answer

I mentioned this as one of my major camp battles…. the revolving door of Jet punters has been a joke for years.

Get someone that can kick the damn ball

Yep. This punter deal is getting problematic… we’re two weeks away from regular season.

Off topic, but I can’t contain my excitement. Brandon Marshall suspended ’til Sept 5th. Here’s to hoping he traded to Jets!!!

Pak-Man (his nickname at the University of Kentucky) said:

“…I want to be the best punter to ever play the game of football. I love lifting weights, I bench press 405 and do 225 28 times.”

(So that’s where the pipes come from.)

Pak-Man’s net with the Saints was 37.8 yards with no fair catches. Shane Lechler’s 2998 net (an all-time NFL record) was 41.1. Only 3.3 yards difference.

Why did the Saints get rid of Pak-Man? They decided to draft a guy who will force fair catches because he can drill holes in the Cowboy’s new stadium scoreboard. Huge hang times.

I like the signing. Let’s see if he’s any better than Reggie Hodges who I personally think is pretty bad, so let’s see we’re in need of a punter.

Btw come visit my blog getchajets.blogspot.com. Im not great but I do what I can. id appreciate it if you guys visited.

Also off the subject…Albert Haynesworth crunched Brady’s throwing shoulder! I couldn’t find any details on the severity of the injury. I suppose I should feel bad for hoping that it’s serious, but I don’t.

    CBS Sports reports:

Brady went to the bench, where he flexed and rotated his arm as the half came to a close.

He did not play in the second half, even though most of the first-team offense returned for the first drive of the third quarter

Remember most of those punts were in domes or fair weather, will find out quickly about him tonight.

29yo journeyman, must be a reason.

At the time I said the jets needed to draft a punter (not here).

The kid that’s replacing Pak at NO has a big big leg, but there were a couple of position punters that they could have taken in the sixth round instead of a practice squad at best material offensive lineman.

This will be a problem all year, as it has for practically my whole Jets Fan existance.

Btw, Graham, now healthy is doing pretty good in AZ.
