Buzz: Jets Not Interested in Reggie Brown?

by Bassett on August 31st, 2009 at 1:35 pm

In his article on Stuckey, Hutchinson relates some of what he’s heard on the Jets potential interest in Eagles Wide Receivers — a topic we wrote about last week. What Hutch hears is that even though the Jets have shown interest, they might not have interest in the guy who’s likely to get pushed out the door.

There have been rumblings that the Jets are eyeing the Eagles’ roster, which has a surplus of wide receivers. But Reggie Brown appears to be the odd man out and the Jets aren’t believed to be interested in him. Hank Basket is a possibility but his price tag may be too high.

Baskett would be the obvious first choice for the Jets. He’s tall (6-4), physical and is quick enough (timed 4.5 in the 2006 Combine) for how the Jets would want to use him … deep. Seemingly though, the Eagles aren’t ready to part ways with the young receiver just yet.

At a party Friday night, I was talking to my friend Dan (super duper brand expert, check their cool work) who is a big Eagles fan. I wanted him to lead me through the list of their receivers.

Dan told me that Curtis has been injured while DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin were already coming on strong. Brown was his most likely guesses on the odd man out of the situation. Personally, I like Jason Avant’s game, but at 6-0, with 4.5 speed, I’m not sure he offers the team much more than they already have with Stuckey, et al.

Shame about Baskett– Kendra (Wilkinson) Baskett could have been our Eva Longoria…

Guess it’s B Marsh or nothin at this point.

    gooooood

  3. avatar NYJBeast89 says:

BRANDON MARSHALL! Go get him Tanny. McD is done with him, its our time to pounce.

  4. avatar seanmac31 says:

Just stop with the Brandon Marshall business. Please. Just. Stop.

  5. avatar NYJBeast89 says:

Seanmac- So it wouldn’t make any sense to trade for a 25 yo receiver who when on the field is a top 5 talent? Wow, news to me. I at least hope they have given Denver a call, if they don’t pick up or want too much then walk away. It is the Jets due diligence to look into B-Marsh.

  6. avatar Zartan says:

i doubt Bellachick will allow the jets to get Marshall. but in a event that they could, i will take the guy.He can do what ever he wants,as long as he shows up for every practice and every game for the next 3-4yrs.

  7. avatar igs says:

fatalistic. I guess Reggie Brown doesn’t have enough misdemeanors and character risks for Tanny. I guess the Jets will get it eventually. Get used to being home in January until they do.

  8. avatar vbsiena24 says:

    Brandon Gibson.

  9. avatar Brendan says:

igs – are you serious? This is Reggie Brown we’re talking about. Is he really the difference between a trip to the playoffs and the team staying home? I really doubt it. I’d rather have Stuckey and Clowney take his reps than trade anything for him.

Zartan – How does Bellicheck have any control whatsoever of what the Broncos do? I realize McDaniels is another on of his disciples, but I doubt he is so unprofessional that he’d let that get in the way of resolving this situation (assuming the Jets had the best offer).

  10. avatar R in CT says:

    Zartan –

“i will take the guy.He can do what ever he wants,as long as he shows up for every practice and every game for the next 3-4yrs.”

That’s the problem — he hasn’t been showing up for practice, and when he has, he has pulled childish stuff like this:

    http://sports.rightpundits.com/?p=3107

Who’s to say that a year or two from now, after having given up something to get him, he isn’t pulling the same thing here?

I can’t remember which writer it was (Cimini, I think), but Washington is unhappy with his contract, but you don’t see him doing the type of immature idiotic things like Marshall — walking through running drills, batting balls away rather than catching them, punting balls away from ball boys.

Is the guy talented? Absolutely. Is he worth the headache? Personally, I don’t think so.

  11. avatar NJets says:

Again… not to justify what Marshall did in any way… it was ridiculous and childish… but there is CLEARLY something wrong with that coach and organization. When your stud franchise QB and stud WR hate you and as for trades, something is wrong. There wasn’t a single way to justify the Cutler situation… especially after last night (ouch). Also, I think the way McDaniels told the Broncos players not to congratulate Brandon on being acquitted of his case is also a bad, assholish move. Id love to see that Beast on our team and I think we can do a lot of things if he comes… it will make our offense not only good… but scary good with those weapons.

  12. avatar swizzle81 says:

Marshall will cost too much and is not worth the pricetag, plus he is a bonehead. By getting Marshall, the Jets would be giving up much needed depth at certain positions in next years draft.

  13. avatar igs says:

Brendan, just like in the draft and free agency, you should make the best out of the players that fall to you. Reggie Brown isn’t the difference, but the passing on a guy like Brown and gunning for a guy like Marshall is just the kind of bone-headed thing that Terry Bradway would’ve done.

I’m referencing the playoffs in terms of a long term attitude vs the immediate year.

  14. avatar igs says:

Wait, nix that. Bradway never had the ambition. Maybe if marshall was a 6th round TE.

  15. avatar Brendan says:

igs – Passing on a guy like Brown? Passing on a guy who never has had a 1000 yard receiving year is bone-headed? We already have Cotchery as a mid-sized tough WR who racks up YAC. Gunning for Marshall, a player with the skill set to be an elite WR in the league, is bone-headed? Reggie Brown may benefit the team if brought in, but how much more than Stuckey and/or Clowney?

  16. avatar greene says:

i guess the britt davis experiment ended in a dud.

  17. avatar Nikolas says:

First, Tannenbaum has to take care of Leo. Give him 5.5 mil per season
Then offer to Denver a conditional 1st and a guaranteed 4th. Then restructure Marshall‘s contract with performance incentives. If it works given our cap, I guess Bent will know better, I would do it in a heartbeat.

  18. avatar ramble914 says:

    Nikolas,

Sounds like a plan to me.

  19. avatar igs says:

    Brendan,

Marshall is a player with obvious personality issues on and off the field. It doesn’t matter how talented he is. He’s not the guy to bring onto this young team. As far as Brown, the guy was brought in with a lot of expectations and I think he still may have the potential to be a special WR. As I continue to say, the guy to bring in is Matt Jones. But if not Jones the Jets need to be looking in the direction of a young player that wont cost too much and that they wont have to give up too many picks to get. IMO they should be much more interested in Brown than Marshall.

Hey Lito Shephard is looking really bad in this game.

  20. avatar Brendan says:

My point is, why give up a draft pick for Brown? He is no better than what we have already. Stuckey and Clowney are showing they have legitimate skills so far this preseason, so why take away from reps to bring a pretty good/nothing special receiver? Both players have shown a lot of promise, Brown may be talented by he’s coming off a horrendous year being hurt and playing in only 10 games with less than 300 yards receiving. No thanks.

And our team isn’t young. We have some young players, but we have a very strong veteran presence on this team. You think guys like Jenkins, Bart Scott, Faneca, Woody, etc. would let Marshall come in and act like a child? You think REX RYAN of all people would stand for that behavior for one second? Marshall is at his wits end with his organization, and I actually feel sorry for him a little bit. Obviously, he could have went about this very differently (like Leon, for example), but I think once he gets out of Denver he’ll be content. And once he is, the Jets can ink him to an incentive heavy contract that will require him to play (and play hard) in order to get paid.

  21. avatar Dylan says:

Reggie Brown is NOT a good receiver. He drops way too many passes and doesn’t even have a height or speed advantage on any of our receivers. There is is no point in adding another mediocre receiver to our roster. We need to sign a legitimate starting receiver or we need to just go with what we have. Signing Reggie Brown would be the Justin McCareins disaster all over again.

The Hank Baskett scenario is a little more interesting because of his height/speed combination. Matt Jones would be a better solution though, if the Jets are desperate for another receiver because of his small price tag and potential. I’m a little worried that no other team has shown any interest in him though. It definitely raises some concern.

If we can get Brandon Marshall for cheap then I think we have to pull the trigger, but I’m not willing to give away multiple high picks for a complete head case. There is no question that he would help the Jets ON THE FIELD but there are definitely concerns about his OFF THE FIELD behavior and his selfish attitude.

I think in the end the Jets will just stick with what they have and hopefully Clowney, Stuckey, or one of out other receivers will develop into a quality starter. Clown and Stuck definitely showed some flashes so far this preseason.

  22. avatar seanmac31 says:

    NYJBeast,

I’m sorry, I thought you were talking about Brandon Marshall, one of the most overrated players in the league. What top five talent were you discussing?

  23. avatar 57JETSBlitz says:

I like the idea of J-Co leading our wr corps. He’s tough as nails, makes all the catches and is a yac-master. IMO he’s our Hines Ward who’s been the Steeler’s #1 for years and nobody talks about him being a #2 because of his hgt/wght/spd ratio. And J-Co kills the Patsies…Nuff said

  24. avatar igs says:

Brendan, I don’t necessarily disagree with you. I’m just assuming that Brown wouldn’t cost more than a 3 and he shouldn’t warrant a high contract. As a matter fact isn’t he in or nearing a contract year? That’s an incentive to do something special. At any rate I’d expect Brown to cost less in the way of picks and money than Marshall. Also in the way of on and off field risks.

Cool if you don’t like Brown. I don’t like Marshall. I like Matt Jones.

  25. avatar Brendan says:

I don’t like Brown. I like Marshall. I like Matt Jones, too bad Rex Ryan doesn’t.

  26. avatar igs says:

Marshall’s got good game. I’m not saying he doesn’t. But it would be a really un-intelligent move. It’s the kind of move that only a loser team like the Raiders would do.

  27. avatar igs says:

Yo Sanchez be looking like he’s sedated in the game.

  28. avatar igs says:

Manningham smoked Revis on a go route.

  29. avatar igs says:

I gotta say, Bryan Thomas is looking really athletic this year.

  30. avatar seanmac31 says:

Again, Marshall’s game is highly overrated. I’ve already posted his DYAR and DVOA for the last two seasons, each of which was down in the 40s. I just picked up KC Joyner’s book and Joyner, while using a totally different methodology, also managed to figure out that Brandon Marshall isn’t very good. DVOA is concerned with efficiency- guys who make catches that put the offense in positions where they are statistically likely to pick up a first down on the series. By that measure, Marshall isn’t any better than Jerricho Cotchery was last year, and is worse than Cotchery was in 2007. Joyner is interested in vertical passing and how players generate yardage at different depths. Guess what? By that measure, Marshall isn’t any better. Lee Evans generated around 445 yards on deep throws in something like 41 or 42 attempts. Brandon Marshall generated a similar number of yards on deep throws, right around 450…but it took him 80+ attempts to get there! Marshall may look like Randy Moss, but the reality is that you need to throw him twice as many balls to generate the same vertical yardage as Lee Evans. And I don’t here anyone saying that Lee Evans is one of the five best receivers in the game or that we need to give up a 1 and a 4 and throw $15 million a year at Evans because, well, because we just have to.

Marshall is a product of Jay Cutler. The reality is you can find 25-30 receivers who will everything for your offense than Marshall will, and the majority of them will neither require $15 million a year or a 1 and a 3. And most of those guys aren’t thugs who beat their girlfriends or punch their television sets for no reason.

    So let’s move on.

  31. avatar Bent says:

“First, Tannenbaum has to take care of Leo. Give him 5.5 mil per season

Squeezing Marshall under this year’s cap isn’t the problem. It’s next year when the Jets would probably have to get rid of a bunch of guys and replace them with cheaper options. That never works (see 2005). It’s too much trouble to go to for a guy I don’t rate that highly anyway and have no desire to root for as a Jet.

  32. avatar Lj says:

i would like to have marshall, but only if it was for a 2nd round pick or a 3rd and a lower end player like brad smith. i think we need to start building depth through the draft so we cant afford to give up multiple picks on one player. i believe we’re already losing anywhere from a 2nd to 4th round pick for the lito trade. we have enough stars right now. i like arrelious benn in the 1st round next year, maybe a pass rusher or a 3-4 end in the 2nd round, and a offensive tackle to eventually replace d. woody like sam young from notre dame. we could spend a later pick on that corner from boise state, his name has slipped my mind, but the kid is a playmaker.

  33. avatar Jetski says:

Sign Matt Jones already!!! Unless they plan to trade for Marshall…

  34. avatar Lj says:

theres no point in trading for reggie brown because we’d still have to use a draft pick on a wide reciever next year. and i’m not sure he’d see the field over clowney as our 3rd wr, and maybe not even smith as our 4th. so instead of using a 4th or 5th round pick to trade for a no good reciever like reggie brown, we can use it to address o-line or d-line depth in next years draft. the only way i’d want to trade for a reciever is if that reciever will make it so we dont need to draft one next year. we have enough number 3 and 4 wide recievers, and we have a great number 2, we need a number 1, and a trade that doesnt address that isnt filling a need.

  35. avatar igs says:

    Jetski,

Glad to hear that I’m not the only voice of reason on this blog.

  36. avatar EastSide says:

    Marshall a top 5 talent?
Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Steve Smith, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Reggie Wayne and Greg Jennings are all still playing in this league.
