Buzz: Woodhead to Make Team?

by Bassett on September 5th, 2009 at 11:32 am

Manish Mehta and Lisa Zimmerman are both reporting on Twitter that Jehuu Caulcrick has been cut and that Danny Woodhead has made the team.

This is unsubstantiated as of yet, but stay tuned. Caulrick might be easier to sneak back onto the team at a later date, if needed. Finding a backup fullback will be an easier chore than shelving Woodhead now after his performance the other night.

More on this and other moves later. I thought that Caulcrick might become a Leron McClain type player in this offense, but it wasn’t happening. In other news, my wife does not care about Danny Woodhead and is stamping her feet that we’ve not been to the Farmer’s Market … duty calls. Hit me up on Twitter or via email if you hear anything in the meantime.

I hope they can find a way to keep him. He’s the best FB I see for next year.

I was hoping since day 1 that woodhead would make the team

Culcruck has a place on this team, he’s been learning from the best at his postion and should be on the practice squad, and make the team easily next year and be called up this year. Woodhead is a game changer as is L.W., and S.G. Thomas Jones can be, but he rarely breaks one for more than 10-15 yards. But is a grinder, S.G. has broken them, L.W. has and now Woodhead, I like the idea of a 4 headed monster. I would love to see what he could do with a screen pass.

I am glad to see the jets fans finally getting over this whole RUDY thing. Woodhead is a proven player. He will not make the team because the “coach has a soft side”. He can play, deal with it and enjoy the show.

After seeing Woodhead exert his will on Thursday, there is no way they can let him go. Jehuu will be a player in this league, and I like him very much but, Woodhead showed that, given the oppportunity, he can be a star.

I love woodhead, the guy has heart. He also seems to standout, whether in preseason games or practices (alas wayne chrebet). Part of what has made the patriots successful is combining talent with players such as woodhead, guys who love playing the game. With a logjam at rb, what kind of role will woodhead have this season? If he does in fact make the team, the writing is clearly on the wall: thomas jones will not be back next season.

  7. avatar Bent says:

Who says Woodhead made it, anyway. Maybe the Jets are going with Brock Christopher as their backup fullback?

  8. avatar AKA...Drew says:

I would be disappointed if Woodhead made it over Jehuu. I get the whole he is a great story and all but he did nothing until the 4th preseason game.

Everyone complains that we watched guys like D Ward and D Ware go become good RB’s on the Gianst and then want to see us cut Jehuu? The guy is a big RB.

Woodhead is a nice story and can “maybe” make some plays. He is a 5’7 180 RB? I mean ome on guys.

  9. avatar vbsiena24 says:

What’s the point of keeping Woodhead? We are deep at RB and he would never see playing time. I would rather keep a 2nd FB than a 4th RB. At least that FB might come in on big goaline packages. Bad move if he stays.

  10. avatar Bent says:

vbs – IF they’re keeping him, I think it’s because they think he’ll be a better 3rd down back NEXT YEAR than anyone they could afford to get on the open market. They have to keep him on the roster, because if they expose him to waivers, he is gone.

If that’s the rationale behind it, I fully support the decision. Of course, maybe he won’t make it and Christopher is being kept as a backup FB.

If the FBs they are cutting are no better than any other FBs they might find on another team’s practice squad, then they shouldn’t be on the team.

Woodhead is not worth a roster spot. the guy is small and played well against 3rd stringers. keep Caulrick on the team. Woodhead is a nice practice player thats it. he wont do anything in this league.

  12. avatar JED says:

We get him(Woodhead) or somebody else will take him off our practice squad, Caulick will be placed on our practice squad , again like last year, and be available next year if T.R. decides to retire.

  13. avatar EastSide says:

I don’t think he’s shown enough to earn a roster spot over Caulcrick. The reason being that Caulcrick is a potential starter a couple years down the road and Woodhead is posed to be, at best, a third string back behind Washington and Greene.
Also, I don’t doubt that he’d be picked up immediately by another team and find success but the thing is the RB position is one of our team’s biggest strengths. When you have this much talent at a position, good players are going to get cut.
I want Woodhead to stick, just not at the expense of Caulcrick.

  14. avatar vbsiena24 says:

    Bent,

I’ll agree with you if that was the thinking. If Jehuu gets taken during waivers I might be upset.

  15. avatar BoCash says:

    Great Job Danny.

  16. avatar AL says:

I’m not sure why all the love for Jehuu other than the fact that everyone is obsessed with how big he is.. He hasn’t carried the ball in 2 years of preseason games which gives you an indication of how two different coaching staffs feel about his running either on the goal line or any wear on the field.

The coaching staff must feel like his blocking isn’t anything special.
