who will snap the ball under center if mangold gets hurt?
Brad Smith plays some really solid special teams and there are some special packages built around him. You have to consider the wildcat with him and Leon.
Kevin from Brick
i thought cummings and juhuu should have made the team…didn’t think izzo or D.coleman would have made the team…even though i thought M.cole did better than D.coleman im still suprised he made it onto the team aswell…but thats just me… anyhow, cummings and juhuu should get picked up by some other team…if not then its better for us…just my thoughts…
i forgot about renkart…
ALEX
Punter from Georgia, first round pick…done deal. Where do I sign?
Kudos on keeping Woodhead. There’s two Woodheads..when Shotty calls plays between the tackles for him, that’s a Woodhead who can’t make 2 yards..this Woodhead did not make the team nor shouold he.
Then there’s the Woodhead who gets plays outside the tackles, on punt returns, on swing passes or wuick slants,..namely anywhere he gets a few yards of open space and he erupts for huge gains…I think that’s the Woodhead the Jets are keeping on the team.
Woodhead has great heart, but despite his preseason heroics, I don’t see him getting many reps this year. How well does he play on special teams? He may get cut later to make room for Ellis/Pace. He is provides another option if we get banged up at the RB position.
Ainge over KC for sure after this season. Kellen is done as a Jet, in my opinion.
Cummings over Izzo, Caulcrick over Coleman. I’m concerned about Richardson getting old and don’t see how much of a difference maker Izzo has been to warrant cutting Cummings. I don’t think Coleman has performed up to expectation, and seems to be on very thin ice. Cole just doesn’t have the experience at this point and might be another soon-to-be-cut player. Why was Ivy cut? Does he provide an upgrade over Coleman or Cole?
I think we’ll be fine at WR. I believe B. Smith still needs to develop some chemistry with Sanchez, and he will be a factor with running/wildcat type plays. I think Stuckey, Clowney and J-Co give us enough firepower for a run first offense.
From Hutch at NJ.com
“Ryan is seething over his unsettled punting situation and is keeping Hodges until he can find someone else. Two names on the Jets short list are Steve Weatherford and rookie A. J. Trapasso, who were released Saturday by the Jaguars and Titans, respectively.”

Wayne Hunter can only block the TV if he is standing in front of it, he sucks.
Brad Smith runs reverses for what a couple of yards , he is taking a valuable spot.
Reggie Hodges, do I even need to say anything. Very disappointed there will definitely wear out our D in games with field position.
Larry Izzo , really?
Other than that very good squad, other than Gholston wasting money and kellen wasting a backup role.
There’s no one in America that can punt for a +40 yard average with hang time ? The JETS will get killed on field position all year unless they bring in someone else.
tazzelrik, Robert Turner can play center
Woodhead made this team as a symbol of the type of player Ryan wants on it…hard working, Wayne Chrebet type, etc…I can’t wait until Meshon Johnson refers to him as a mascot on ESPN. Really, this guy is not going to see the field unless we are blowing someone out or getting blown out. He is a scout team player for now, but they must have kept instead of losing him, as someone would have claimed him and he would have never made it to the practice squad. Tanny memory is too good, as he remembers how we worked Derrick Ward a couple of summers and got claimed by the Giants, then goes on to be a big part of that offense, as he continued to mature somewhere else, after we groomed him. TJ has one more year left on this team, so he is an insurance policy and Jehuu will make it back to the PS.
The legend of AJ Trapasso grows and grows! Yes, he hit a scoreboard (so did former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson in a recent international, shall we get him?). Yes, he scored a spectacular TD. His preseason numbers were practically identical to Hodges though!
Sack – Isn’t D Rhodes out for the season?
AI – Woodhead was working on blocking kicks in camp and is a good kick return option (that’s the role I thought he would make the team in, not as a running back), so may see action with Allison having blown out his knee. However, I think they mainly kept him for next year, so unless there are injuries, he will probably be inactive, so his ST play is irrelevant.
tazzelrik – As BKF says, Turner plays center (and did – well – in the first preseason game). Slauson can also play center and both guard spots (although I think they kept him for future use).
Alex – Smith’s a great athlete, but I don’t think anyone ever pretended he was world class. And his arm is lousy by NFL standards.
The only thing that bothers me about keeping Woodhead is when will he be used?(This year and in the future) He is a poormans leon washington. Are they keeping woodhead as a backup plan for leon? I suggested this in the past, trade Leon if they cant work out a deal and plug in Woodhead. This wouldnt be good for team chemistry- not paying their own guys when they produce. I dont see the point for this year of him being active if Leon stays healthy. Next year, if they cut T. Jones, i still dont like woodhead in their, cause he is just like leon, but not as good. Rather give the touches to leon not woodhead next year if woodhead were to be the 3rd back. Or maybe i shoud be looking at this as they have an insurance plan if Leon gets injured- just leon’s backup. If leon goes down, the team will still be able to run the same stuff cause they have woodhead.
Side note- love how the Jets official site lists westerman as a DE, but have him as David Harris’ backup! Did he even play MLB in the preseason? Thought i saw him playing mainly OLB/DE.
Also- all the people ranking on the OL- stating need to get OL depth- I was pretty impressed with our OL depth. They seemed to have held their own pretty well. Not sure if we need to add depth their. I love Turner- plays Center or guard, I like Kracalik- big guy- plays Tackle, Hunter- looked good after getting burned by Little- Little is an all pro DE- nothing to be too embarrassed by that- he got a great jump off the snap of the ball, Hunter- plays tackle and TE, Slauson- for the future- plays a lot of positions on the OL too. As a whole, didnt see too many times where the backup OLmen allowed sacks or big hits on the QB. Also our backup DLmen and LB’s seemed to consistantly get to opposing teams QB’s, showing they looked better than opposing teams backups. So i feel we have good depth on both sides of the ball.
I’m very interested to see how the Jets current roster of WR’s fares in the season. We all know the names by now, but to the rest of the league, the Jets WR’s are unknown. In fantasy, I doubt anyone other than Cotchery and Keller will be drafted except in the deepest of leagues.
Who knows how this crop of WR’s will do? Perhaps, as many have complained, they will be completely ineffective. On the other hand, perhaps Stucky will be a revelation. He has a lot of YAC and seems to catch most of the balls thrown in his direction. I mean, who was convinced that Chrebet would be as good as he was when he first made the Jets roster? Could Clowney stay healthy and truly be a downfield threat? Wright and Sanchez clicked in the pre-season (or at least in practice).
Anything can happen. For now, I remain hopeful.
Bent, the reason Trapasso is a better option then Hodges is because of his upside. Hes a rookie out of OSU and was one of the better punters in college. So, I would take the high upside guy opposed to a guy who has exactly taken his chance and ran with it.
Brad — interesting post on the Leon/Woodhead thing, and it made me wonder. Did they give Woodhead the spot to save a couple million dollars in the Leon negotiations? “We feel Woodhead could fill your position very neatly” (Bump Bailey reference)
Sign Leon this week before game one, cut Woodhead for Ellis.
Sorry if this seems paranoid, I’m a Mets fan and this is the exact thing they would do to save a few dollars.
Larry Izzo is the ‘QB of the Special Teams’ like Leonhard is of the defense. Don’t minimize the importance of ST’s. You want to replace Leon with an average kickoff returner?
ST’s are 1-3 of the game of football. It is clear that no one like Cummings or Caulcrick, etc., stepped up adequately to make Izzo expendable. Izzo’s role is of monumental importance guys. When someone playing his role screws up, the other team can score a TD. That’s more impactful than Cummings will be this year IMHO.
If Izzo plays up to his normal level, he goes to the Pro Bowl – does that register with anyone out here? HELLO McFLY!!!
@James in TN – From what I’ve seen, Brad Smith is a very good special teams player, especially in coverage often getting to the ball first and making tackles.
His lifetime rushing avg is 6.2 yds/att after averaging 9.4 yds/att last year. These stats are based on the relatively few carries he gets per year, but show that he has talent with the ball in his hands.
I think that at 6’2″ 210lbs, he has the size and toughness to be a difference maker. I wouldn’t be so eager to give up on him yet.
My concern is that I haven’t been especially wowwed by Schott’s in game play calling the last couple of years.
@Bent – Good point on the Allison/Woodhead angle.
Bent, I’ve liked Trapasso since before the preseason. The reason being, if you’re going to have a bad punter, which the Jets are, it makes sense to have the guy with the most potential. Trapasso has the biggest chance of helping in the future, or even improving throughout this year.
Nelson/cmart28 – I don’t disagree, just thought it was amusing that his numbers were no better. As I pointed out already, Hodges stats were poor, but could have been even worse, because his longest punt rolled 15-20 yards and he shanked one that didn’t count.
Just get a reliable one. Even if they end up with the 32nd best punter in the league (who WILL be available) that figures to be a big upgrade over Reggie.
That guy seems to be Pakaluk, but…
The question still remains…
If Hodges is so bad, why is he still around? What does he bring that others aren’t showing?
I mean the Jets cut him back in April and then brought him back.
Anyone think it’s worth taking a look at Tim Crowder who was just released, had 16n tackles and 4 sacks his rookie season, didn’t play all that much last year but former 2nd round pick out of Texas. Might be a good guy to have a look at.
This situation with Woodhead is questionable and up for debate. If you look at the Jets as a team that is going to win on defense and special teams he really doesn’t make you better. If it’s a matter of having fresh legs for a grind it out offense then it makes sense. Why draft Shonn Green then?
Does anyone have any confidence in Vernon Gohlston?
Any ideas for a 3rd TE? Keller is nice but we need more.
Any chance we could trade Clemens for a TE?
Why did we let Baker go??????!!!!!
I want answers!
