  1. Que esta Westerman?

  2. Did Westermann make the team??

  3. Seriously, Westerman not on the 53? …not announced as a cut? what’s the deal?

  4. The Jets will not keep 10 LBers all season (you are missing Westerman). 2 of Izzo, Trusnick, and Renkart will be cut when Pace comes back and to make room for a player picked up off waivers. If I am Reggie Hodges, I don’t bother unpacking.

  5. Good one David. I count 54 (includes 2 suspended so I think he is just missing from the LB). I sure hope is not ranked less than 6.

Again, this ain’t over. Two more cuts to go assuming no pick ups.

    h

  6. I believe you meant Donde Esta Westermann? And I’m with you, where is he? He wasn’t cut right?

  7. That’s definitely 53 where is Jamal?

  8. Westerman Made the Team if you go to the roster section on NY Jets.com they have the full roster including the cuts just made. I pulled this right from the list. hes listed at DE

    55 Jamaal
    Westerman DE 6′3″ 255 24 R Rutgers

  9. who gets cut for reggie brown, cory ivy, and brian brohm?

  10. and ben watson…

  11. Westerman made team. Not sure who is listed above that didn’t make team.

  12. There are only 54 players listed above. Add Westerman to make 55.

  13. Westerman made the the team. Pace, Ellis and Allison don’t count.

  14. From http://nyj.scout.com/
New York City – Jets WR Aundrae Allison blew out his right knee in the Jets-Eagles preseason games, and was put on injured reserve on Saturday. He will be out for the season. The injury occurred on a kickoff return.

  15. Where in the world is J. Westermann??

  16. Jimmy:

This is why a foreign language requirement in our schools is a complete waste of time. LOL! Donde esta is what I was trying to remember, but my limited practical experience using the Spanish language since 1983 keeps me rusty. At least I learned how to roll my R’s.

  17. So who is getting cut when Pace and Ellis come back?

  18. See like a lot of numbers at cornerback. Not depth, just numbers. At least one of those guys is dust when Ellis comes back.

  19. If Watson or Reggie become available I think we cut Kracalik.

  20. David,

“A” for effort… when you work in a pizzeria where every country in Latin America is represented, you can’t help but to have it stick your head LOL. Quite sad, I know…

Any word on whether the eagles released their cuts yet?

  21. Okay heres my eight man practice squad:

    1. Cummings LB
    2. Caulcrick FB
    3. Britt Davis WR
    4. Stanley Danials OG
    5. Kareem Browne TE/DE
    6 . Matt Kroul NT/DE
    7. Zack Potter DE
    8. Jack Simmons TE

  22. I can see Izzo, Cole and Coleman off the roster once we likely pick up some bodies on the waiver wire.
“One man’s whiskey is another man’s wine.”

  23. cnt believe ucmmings didn’t make it hes still very young and put up a good pre seasno…

  24. Donde esta Nuu Faaola?

  25. For all you Bear Pascoe fans out there, he was cut by the 49ers today.

  26. Eagles cuts:
The cuts: CB Trae Williams, CB Jack Ikegwuonu, DE Bryan Smith, DE Josh Gaines, LB Tank Daniels, FS Reshard Langford, WR Danny Amendola, RB Lorenzo Booker, C Dallas Reynolds, G Paul Fanaika, G Mike Gibson, TE Rob Myers, FB Marcus Mailei and FB Kyle Eckel, DT Dan Klecko, LB Matt Wilhelm and TE Matt Schobel

Rookie OT Fenuki Tupou has been placed on injured reserve.

  27. The Steelers’ cuts included: quarterback Mike Reilly, running backs Carey Davis, Isaac Redman and Justin Vincent, wide receivers Dallas Baker, Tyler Grisham and Brandon Williams, tight end Dezmond Sherrod, offensive linemen Jason Capizzi, Jeremy Parquet and A.Q. Shipley, defensive linemen Sonny Harris, Steve McClendon and Scott Paxson, linebackers Bruce Davis, Tom Korte, Andy Schantz and Donovan Woods, defensive backs Roy Lewis and Anthony Madison and kicker Piotr Czech.

  28. Any decent punting options dropped today?

  29. Damn it, Pats traded David Thomas to the Saints. Didn’t see that one coming, probably leaves us with Keller and Hartsock.

  30. Whoops nevermind. Seems they also traded for Giants TE Michael Matthers and released Alex Smith. So is Smith Jet bound?

  31. Some awful decisions, not sure what the Jets were thinking with some of these.

  32. hope we pick up ronald curry and/or ben watson

  33. Do not see why they kept Izzo unless they cut him to upgrade another position. The same goes for Woodhead, I now he gives it his all, but the guy will not cut it against starters in the NFL. The punting has to get addressed soon, Hodges cannot be on this team much longer. Drew Coleman is also a waste of roster spot and I hope he does not see much playing team this year.

  34. swizzle81

any cuts that interest you? what about a third tight end and a 4th receiver? is ivy on the market at corner? that’s ryan’s guy. we could use him as well.

  35. This doesn’t look like the final 53 to me. First, you know Hodges is a goner. Second, When Ellis and Pace come back then there has to be 2 more cuts. Does Renkart, Pitoitua, or Izzo make it through that? Finally, depending on who is available, I could see the jets making additional changes at DB or OL.

  36. To 2nd mole 57….Bear Pascoe was the highest rated blocking TE in the draft.

For the record … I was one of the big fans in April…lol

  37. Anyone know of any good punters that were released? They can’t keep hodges

  38. surprising that they kept Renkhart and cut Cummings? Also 7 CB’s hmmnn one goes when suspensions return. 9 lineman, I knew ryan would cut his boy kracelik. We need a punter.

for the cuts that clear waivers, I project our Practice Squad to be:

    cook-S
    daniels -OL
    Cummings- LB
    Caulrick- FB
    Potter- DL
    Kroul -DL
    Britt Davis- WR
    Kareem- TE

Simmons had his shot and blew it.

  39. Could Cory Ivy be the security the Jets need at the CB position?

  40. 3 things are glaring here;

    1. Worst WR core we had in last 15 years, at least 15
    2. DE Bunch weak at best
    3. I disagree with QB order, Ainge has earned #2 spot

  41. I say we get the recentley released Titans punter AJ Trapasso, he had the great 40 yard run for a TD in the first pre-season game and was also the punter who hit the scoreboard in Dallas… He seems to make some headlines, maybe he can make some good ones in NY…

  42. Add to 1. And I can safely say that we never had a QB with more potential that had less to work with than Sanchez.

  43. CMart, Awful decisions implies impact. While I agree there are decisions one might question (keeping Izzo, Renkart, and both Cole and Coleman) and debate (keeping the player they don’t now need in Woodhead who has value and not keeping their only backup FB in Jehu who has little value), was there any decision to cut a player whose absence is likely to cost us a game this year? Did we keep anyone who we will absolutely not have any use for this year or next?

I think everyone agrees that the guys who are going to play are on the team.

    Harlan

  44. I think some of you are way too worried about the wide receivers. This is a run first and second team, not a run and gun team. Keller is going to catch a ton of balls, Cotchery is more than serviceable and so is Stuckey. I know Clowney is raw but all he does is get open deep and catch balls.

What’s the point of having a Marshall type when we aren’t going to play that type of O? Having a headcase WR who demands 8 or 9 balls a game is not worth the trouble because they aren’t going to get it with this team this year.

Get more more depth at TE, D line, O line and obviously a punter who isn’t more focused on tweeting to God than he is at hitting a 40 yard net and we are in good shape.

  45. Any ideas of this guy as a #2 QB (though article says he wanted to start.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp09/news/story?id=4449160

  46. The Chiefs released Bernard Pollard. Maybe we should sign him just so he can face Brady twice more.

  47. Interesting info on the NYJETS.COM depth chart, which isnt updated with these cuts, makes some of these cuts more understanding! Renkart is B. Scott’s Backup and Westerman is Harris’ backup. Thought they would keep Cummings, but he is behind Westerman in backing up Harris, so thats why he was cut. Also found it interesting that i could of sworn when Renkart was sign he was listed around 230lbs and the roster now has him at 245lbs.
Pace is out so they have both of his backups still on the roster- Murrell and Trusnick- one will be gone after his suspension- trusnick is the third back up so I assume he will be gone unless murrell stinks and trusnick shines in the first 4 games. I like Cole and since our CB’s havent been solid yet the team is keeping extra for now- all the surprising one being on Lito Sheppards depth chart side. Ropati Pitiotua is Ellis’ backup and has looked good in my eyes during preseason- he also gained about 20lbs since last year. The team kept one backup for each one of the OLmen. Hunter can also play a little TE so only 2 TE’s needed.

  48. the punter from georgia today had an average of almost 60 yards a punt……yes, 60 yards a punt. can we give up our first round pick now for him….

  49. TE Alex Smith did get cut, along with DJ Hackett. And I agree with the poster above who says to go after the Titans punter who hit the Dallas scoreboard- at least he can hit it high!

  50. Im trying to find a list of all the CUTS mostly the wide recievers can someone Post it if they can find one please

  51. thanks for the note on westerman, i made the correction. the site has him listed as a DE, and I wanted to put him as an LB, and missed doing that.

  52. What the Hell does Drew Coleman Have to do to get cut. What does he have on Jets Brass that allows him to stay on the Roster and Contribute Nothing. I hated last year evertime there was a big pass play mostly on 3rd down it was Drew Coleman getting beat or falling down! Its mindboggling

  53. Jehuu Should be on the team. I dont think Danny Woodhead will touch the ball this season. Its just keeping him so he doesnt go anywhere else. Also Leaving out the last preseason game he was not impressive at all. I think he had less than a 3 yard avg We cant let sentimentality hurt other aspects of the team!

  54. no Kenwin Cummings…..I never imagined that day would ever come…..sad

  55. BRETT JUSTIN,

the one receiver you should keep an eye on is ruvell martin from green bay. decent size, not a burner, but good hands, and can help out as a 4th receiver behind stuckey, cotch, and clowney.

  56. I remember that guy from NFL Europe maybe 3 or 4 years ago. He was a monster at that level. Red zone threat.

  57. BENT,

yes, he was. he is a good player. i think he can help us out. would we have to cut brad smith though? smith is more versatile than he is though. if smith can step up his game just a little bit in the passing game it would help us out tremendously. wft. he was supposed to be a world class athlete. come on!!!

  58. Alex, with the minimal research I did out there, I would take a look at the RB Ian Johnson who was cut, played at Boise State and cut Woodhead for him. TE is still a concern, they are going to need someone else unless they think Hartsock is the answer.

Punting needs to be solved, bring in the kid from Ohio State A.J. Trapasso, he was hitting the scoreboard consistently in Dallas, cannot be worse than Hodges. I like the depth this team has at LB. I wouldnt be surprised if they sign Cory Ivy now that he has been cut, maybe they can get rid of Coleman for him. But like Harlan said, we do not have to worry about starters, with the exception of punting, only depth at other positions.

  59. swizzle81,

GOOD call on ian johnson. i didn’t even know he got cut??? he ran like a 4.45 at the combine. and he is a good 205. i think he is more physical than woodhead. but do you think rex and tanny would be vilified if they cut him and signed johnson? did johnson do anything this preseason? why couldn’t he be the third back behind peterson and taylor? who else is on their depth chart?

  60. Justin Miller got cut from the Raiders, btw. Hahahaha.

  61. Release Kellen C. and sign Jeff Garcia?

  62. I wonder how many of these cuts (across the NFL) will opt to go to the UFL. It would make sense, I think, so they get more playing time, guaranteed money, and the season is short enough so they could play some NFL games.

  63. I can’t believe that so many people are still dogging Woodhead. The guy works his butt of day after day…and some of you still think that he doesn’t deserve a shot!!?? Just watch and see instead of complaining constantly!!! MAN!!!

  64. Disagree Completely, just about all NFL players work their butt off, and guys like Caulcrick and Cummings who work their butts off and have more of a chance of contributing this year didn’t make it.

  65. Cummings would have definitely made more contributions or an impact than Izzo or Woodhead this year. But its not all that bad when we are talkinga bout 3rd and 4th stringers I guess.

  66. Alex morzio thanks he could defenly be a decent option…I still believe clowney will really have a nice season kid can stretch the field and has shown to be able to have solid hands….Also with people hating on woodhead, this kid has talent He is all time leader in rushing yards in college not to mention what put it over the top for me to believe he can be productive for a team is that he BULKED up to 200 pounds… hes 5′9 200 with real solid speed and great field vision, he found holes that eagles game up the middle and broke it outside and he just showed he can be productive…im so happy for him and really think he can help if we give him a shot…

  67. Saw the Jacksonville cut P Steve Weatherford — not all-world by any means, but a definite upgrade over Hodges …

  68. i just don’t understand the woodhead move, i mean im all for the kid and its a good story but i thought we should have kept Jehuu over him. woodhead wont see any playing time, at least Jehuu could get reps at FB.

  69. So far so good I guess.

I would like to see them get rid of Brad Smith. The guy has not proved anything in his career yet. I would much rather pick up a veteran receiver that is a decent player but brings leadership to the yougn WR corp. BTW I think Stuckey is the real deal. This guy will prove to maybe even be the #1. I know a lot of you will be killingme for saying that, but I really like that Rex is giving Stuckey, Clowney and Wright a chance. Brad Smith though has got to go.

Lets pay Leon, and go forward. 10-6 anyone and a wild card?

  70. BTW nyjets90

I love the woodhead move. Maybe he takes some special teams return plays from Leon so he can get more touches. TJ is going to lose carries this year. How about run some wild cat with Leon and Woodhead? JK

  71. I think signing Jeff Garcia ( i saw that post) is a horrible idea. I do think Ainge earned the back up spot. We can cut Clemens and bring Harvard back :)

Maybe bring in John David Booty as 3rd string to Sanchez’ team. That would be funny.

  72. DJ Hacket would be a decent pick up as a replacement for Smith. He is a decent receiver who played well years back with Seattle when they had about 4-5 good receivers (branch’s first year) that was their Superbowl year I believe.

  73. Love the Woodhead move, he deserves it

  74. I think Woodhead’s a great story, but how about a proven vet like Dominic Rhodes? Or, for DT depth, Terdell Sands? He has to be better than Pouha.

  75. I agree Sack, Woodhead has very little value for the Jets. I would much rather use his roster spot to sign another corner or d-lineman.

As far as DT, I thought Howard Green actually looked pretty good and I think he can be an adequate stand-in guy for Jenkins.

  76. who will snap the ball under center if mangold gets hurt?

  77. Brad Smith plays some really solid special teams and there are some special packages built around him. You have to consider the wildcat with him and Leon.

    Kevin from Brick

  78. i thought cummings and juhuu should have made the team…didn’t think izzo or D.coleman would have made the team…even though i thought M.cole did better than D.coleman im still suprised he made it onto the team aswell…but thats just me… anyhow, cummings and juhuu should get picked up by some other team…if not then its better for us…just my thoughts…

  79. i forgot about renkart…

  80. ALEX

Punter from Georgia, first round pick…done deal. Where do I sign?

  81. Kudos on keeping Woodhead. There’s two Woodheads..when Shotty calls plays between the tackles for him, that’s a Woodhead who can’t make 2 yards..this Woodhead did not make the team nor shouold he.

Then there’s the Woodhead who gets plays outside the tackles, on punt returns, on swing passes or wuick slants,..namely anywhere he gets a few yards of open space and he erupts for huge gains…I think that’s the Woodhead the Jets are keeping on the team.

  82. Woodhead has great heart, but despite his preseason heroics, I don’t see him getting many reps this year. How well does he play on special teams? He may get cut later to make room for Ellis/Pace. He is provides another option if we get banged up at the RB position.

Ainge over KC for sure after this season. Kellen is done as a Jet, in my opinion.

Cummings over Izzo, Caulcrick over Coleman. I’m concerned about Richardson getting old and don’t see how much of a difference maker Izzo has been to warrant cutting Cummings. I don’t think Coleman has performed up to expectation, and seems to be on very thin ice. Cole just doesn’t have the experience at this point and might be another soon-to-be-cut player. Why was Ivy cut? Does he provide an upgrade over Coleman or Cole?

I think we’ll be fine at WR. I believe B. Smith still needs to develop some chemistry with Sanchez, and he will be a factor with running/wildcat type plays. I think Stuckey, Clowney and J-Co give us enough firepower for a run first offense.

  83. From Hutch at NJ.com

“Ryan is seething over his unsettled punting situation and is keeping Hodges until he can find someone else. Two names on the Jets short list are Steve Weatherford and rookie A. J. Trapasso, who were released Saturday by the Jaguars and Titans, respectively.”

    http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2009/09/punter_wide_receiver_tight_end.html

  84. Wayne Hunter can only block the TV if he is standing in front of it, he sucks.

Brad Smith runs reverses for what a couple of yards , he is taking a valuable spot.

Reggie Hodges, do I even need to say anything. Very disappointed there will definitely wear out our D in games with field position.

    Larry Izzo , really?

Other than that very good squad, other than Gholston wasting money and kellen wasting a backup role.

  85. There’s no one in America that can punt for a +40 yard average with hang time ? The JETS will get killed on field position all year unless they bring in someone else.

  86. tazzelrik, Robert Turner can play center

  87. Woodhead made this team as a symbol of the type of player Ryan wants on it…hard working, Wayne Chrebet type, etc…I can’t wait until Meshon Johnson refers to him as a mascot on ESPN. Really, this guy is not going to see the field unless we are blowing someone out or getting blown out. He is a scout team player for now, but they must have kept instead of losing him, as someone would have claimed him and he would have never made it to the practice squad. Tanny memory is too good, as he remembers how we worked Derrick Ward a couple of summers and got claimed by the Giants, then goes on to be a big part of that offense, as he continued to mature somewhere else, after we groomed him. TJ has one more year left on this team, so he is an insurance policy and Jehuu will make it back to the PS.

  88. The legend of AJ Trapasso grows and grows! Yes, he hit a scoreboard (so did former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson in a recent international, shall we get him?). Yes, he scored a spectacular TD. His preseason numbers were practically identical to Hodges though!

Sack – Isn’t D Rhodes out for the season?

AI – Woodhead was working on blocking kicks in camp and is a good kick return option (that’s the role I thought he would make the team in, not as a running back), so may see action with Allison having blown out his knee. However, I think they mainly kept him for next year, so unless there are injuries, he will probably be inactive, so his ST play is irrelevant.

tazzelrik – As BKF says, Turner plays center (and did – well – in the first preseason game). Slauson can also play center and both guard spots (although I think they kept him for future use).

Alex – Smith’s a great athlete, but I don’t think anyone ever pretended he was world class. And his arm is lousy by NFL standards.

  89. The only thing that bothers me about keeping Woodhead is when will he be used?(This year and in the future) He is a poormans leon washington. Are they keeping woodhead as a backup plan for leon? I suggested this in the past, trade Leon if they cant work out a deal and plug in Woodhead. This wouldnt be good for team chemistry- not paying their own guys when they produce. I dont see the point for this year of him being active if Leon stays healthy. Next year, if they cut T. Jones, i still dont like woodhead in their, cause he is just like leon, but not as good. Rather give the touches to leon not woodhead next year if woodhead were to be the 3rd back. Or maybe i shoud be looking at this as they have an insurance plan if Leon gets injured- just leon’s backup. If leon goes down, the team will still be able to run the same stuff cause they have woodhead.

Side note- love how the Jets official site lists westerman as a DE, but have him as David Harris’ backup! Did he even play MLB in the preseason? Thought i saw him playing mainly OLB/DE.

  90. Also- all the people ranking on the OL- stating need to get OL depth- I was pretty impressed with our OL depth. They seemed to have held their own pretty well. Not sure if we need to add depth their. I love Turner- plays Center or guard, I like Kracalik- big guy- plays Tackle, Hunter- looked good after getting burned by Little- Little is an all pro DE- nothing to be too embarrassed by that- he got a great jump off the snap of the ball, Hunter- plays tackle and TE, Slauson- for the future- plays a lot of positions on the OL too. As a whole, didnt see too many times where the backup OLmen allowed sacks or big hits on the QB. Also our backup DLmen and LB’s seemed to consistantly get to opposing teams QB’s, showing they looked better than opposing teams backups. So i feel we have good depth on both sides of the ball.

  91. I’m very interested to see how the Jets current roster of WR’s fares in the season. We all know the names by now, but to the rest of the league, the Jets WR’s are unknown. In fantasy, I doubt anyone other than Cotchery and Keller will be drafted except in the deepest of leagues.

Who knows how this crop of WR’s will do? Perhaps, as many have complained, they will be completely ineffective. On the other hand, perhaps Stucky will be a revelation. He has a lot of YAC and seems to catch most of the balls thrown in his direction. I mean, who was convinced that Chrebet would be as good as he was when he first made the Jets roster? Could Clowney stay healthy and truly be a downfield threat? Wright and Sanchez clicked in the pre-season (or at least in practice).

Anything can happen. For now, I remain hopeful.

  92. Bent, the reason Trapasso is a better option then Hodges is because of his upside. Hes a rookie out of OSU and was one of the better punters in college. So, I would take the high upside guy opposed to a guy who has exactly taken his chance and ran with it.

  93. Brad — interesting post on the Leon/Woodhead thing, and it made me wonder. Did they give Woodhead the spot to save a couple million dollars in the Leon negotiations? “We feel Woodhead could fill your position very neatly” (Bump Bailey reference)

Sign Leon this week before game one, cut Woodhead for Ellis.

Sorry if this seems paranoid, I’m a Mets fan and this is the exact thing they would do to save a few dollars.

  94. Larry Izzo is the ‘QB of the Special Teams’ like Leonhard is of the defense. Don’t minimize the importance of ST’s. You want to replace Leon with an average kickoff returner?

ST’s are 1-3 of the game of football. It is clear that no one like Cummings or Caulcrick, etc., stepped up adequately to make Izzo expendable. Izzo’s role is of monumental importance guys. When someone playing his role screws up, the other team can score a TD. That’s more impactful than Cummings will be this year IMHO.

If Izzo plays up to his normal level, he goes to the Pro Bowl – does that register with anyone out here? HELLO McFLY!!!

  95. @James in TN – From what I’ve seen, Brad Smith is a very good special teams player, especially in coverage often getting to the ball first and making tackles.

His lifetime rushing avg is 6.2 yds/att after averaging 9.4 yds/att last year. These stats are based on the relatively few carries he gets per year, but show that he has talent with the ball in his hands.

I think that at 6′2″ 210lbs, he has the size and toughness to be a difference maker. I wouldn’t be so eager to give up on him yet.

My concern is that I haven’t been especially wowwed by Schott’s in game play calling the last couple of years.

@Bent – Good point on the Allison/Woodhead angle.

  96. Bent, I’ve liked Trapasso since before the preseason. The reason being, if you’re going to have a bad punter, which the Jets are, it makes sense to have the guy with the most potential. Trapasso has the biggest chance of helping in the future, or even improving throughout this year.

  97. Nelson/cmart28 – I don’t disagree, just thought it was amusing that his numbers were no better. As I pointed out already, Hodges stats were poor, but could have been even worse, because his longest punt rolled 15-20 yards and he shanked one that didn’t count.

Just get a reliable one. Even if they end up with the 32nd best punter in the league (who WILL be available) that figures to be a big upgrade over Reggie.

  98. That guy seems to be Pakaluk, but…

  99. The question still remains…

If Hodges is so bad, why is he still around? What does he bring that others aren’t showing?

I mean the Jets cut him back in April and then brought him back.

  100. Anyone think it’s worth taking a look at Tim Crowder who was just released, had 16n tackles and 4 sacks his rookie season, didn’t play all that much last year but former 2nd round pick out of Texas. Might be a good guy to have a look at.

  101. This situation with Woodhead is questionable and up for debate. If you look at the Jets as a team that is going to win on defense and special teams he really doesn’t make you better. If it’s a matter of having fresh legs for a grind it out offense then it makes sense. Why draft Shonn Green then?

Does anyone have any confidence in Vernon Gohlston?
Any ideas for a 3rd TE? Keller is nice but we need more.
Any chance we could trade Clemens for a TE?
Why did we let Baker go??????!!!!!

    I want answers!
