Jets Announce Cutdowns

by Bassett on September 5th, 2009 at 4:25 pm

The Jets have just released their final cut list. The Jets placing one player in Injured Reserve and two on the Reserve/Suspended list.

Take a look after the jump

Injured Reserve:
WR Aundrae Allison

Waived:
CB Rashad Barksdale
TE Kevin Brock
TE Kareem Brown
RB Jehuu Caulcrick
FB Brock Christopher
S Emanuel Cook
LB Kenwin Cummings
OL Stanley Daniels
WR Britt Davis
K Parker Douglass
WR Marcus Henry
RB Anthony Kimble
DL Matt Kroul
T Nevin McCaskill
OT Ryan McKee
C Michael Parenton
DE Zach Potter
TE Jack Simmons
DL Ty Steinkuhler

Reserve/Suspended:
DL Shaun Ellis
LB Calvin Pace

Reaction: That they were going to place someone on the IR is no surprise. I’d be curious to know what injury Allison received to land there, but the truth of the matter is that the Jets are prone to do this sort of thing. I am a little surprised Kenwin Cummings and Stanley Daniels didn’t make the team, so look for Mangini to pick him up either of them on waivers. Other than those two, there were no new names on that list that I looked at as was really shocked by, but I was shocked that Marquice Cole, Renkart and Izzo all made it.

I’ll put together the final roster in a few minutes.

how the heck did izzo make the team?!

    awful

  2. avatar simplysimon2 says:

Those last 3 (Cole, Izzo and Renkart) look like wiggle room for picking up other players that were cut by other teams: like another TE, WR, CB, or whatever. Cole is the only one I would keep especially over Drew Coleman. Let Mangini have him.

  3. avatar AL says:

Izzo must have been a Westoff request for the special teams.

Surprised Brandon renkart made the team over cummings.

  4. avatar nyckage says:

We should get our hands on Reggie Brown

  5. avatar J-Kay says:

Cole made it? We just have way more DBs than needed. I definitely see that spot going to someone on waivers…

  6. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

either way, I think Izzo will be cut when Calvin Pace returns from suspension if not earlier

  7. avatar Andrew says:

i was hoping deion branch would get cut

  8. avatar Andrew says:

so the jets could pick him up

  9. avatar JetOrange says:

    I Have:

    3 QB
    5 WR
9 OL – Kracilik the surprise here
    2 TE
    5 RB – Woodhead is a joke

    24 Total Offensive Players

6 DL Plus the suspended Ellis
9 LB Izzo as Kirk stated”awful” Renkart over Cummings Plus susp. Pace
11 Defensive Backs Cole and Coleman make it

    26 Total Defensive Players

3 for Special Teams, Hodges, Feely & Dearth

    Total 53

  10. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

How do you call Woodhead a joke? The guy has put forth 150% effort everytime he steps foot on the field. He was voted as the rookie who most represents himself like a professional. That work ethic and mentality can go a long way.

  11. avatar david harris says:

maybe the jets will get cory ivy now…. he was rumored before he signed with the browns, now that he’s cut they can add some depth. man imagine if the jets had ivy and rolle as well as this current group. oh well the defense promises to be nasty regardless.

lets hope ivy and brown now before next sunday….

  12. avatar AKA...Drew says:

How Drew Coleman continues to make this team is hilarious. I guess Rex is teased by his speed and will get burned like Mangini did.

Suprised by the Jehuu and Cummings cut.

I will say this again. I am stunned Woodhead made the team. Do you know how many guys have huge 4th preseason games and then get cut??? All of them!! That why there in there. They arent going to make the team.

I knew Cole would make the team. It just suprises me that he and Coleman made it.

  13. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

There are two remaining questions before anyone can really claim the prize.

    1) Who, if anyone, do the Jets pick up from the jetsam and flotsam released by other teams today. I assume they have decided not to trade with anyone for reasons I cannot fathom (although perhaps the decision to keep Cole, Coleman Renkart and Izzo was because there was a whiff about a trade for a DB). Perhaps the decision to keep Woodhead is there was interest in a runner (TJ?).

    2) Even if no one is added or traded, who goes when Ellis returns after game one and Pace after game 4. I am rooting for a roster without Cole, Coleman, Renkart and Izzo and one with Woodhead. Enough of cutting RB who end up playing for another team because we kept a vet for his last year.

    harlan

  14. avatar david i says:

Cole will be gone when they sign Ivey…

  15. avatar JerryB says:

With at least two more cuts to be made, I can’t see Izzo naking the team.

  16. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    Harlan??

You talk about keeping young RB’s but wanted to see Jehuu cut? He is a big back like the 2 backs that went to the Giants (Ward and Ware)

Woodhead is not a RB. He is a little player that has some speed. He should not have made this team. He is just too small to play in this league at a high level.

Hopefully Rex wasnt wooed by a overrated showing against guys who are already bagging fruit

  17. avatar Ryan says:

Westerman Made the Team if you go to the roster section on NY Jets.com they have the full roster including the cuts just made. I pulled this right from the list. hes listed at DE

    55 Jamaal
    Westerman DE 6’3″ 255 24 R Rutgers

  18. avatar AKA Jack says:

I admire Woodhead, the kid is obviously tough as nails and talented but can anyone tell me how he gets on the field? He is listed on the depth chart as the 4th tailback behind Jones, Washington and Greene. So what’s his role?

Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me when we have one very good but very old fulllback.

  19. avatar iggy McGee says:

Woodhead strikes me as more short than little. What is he? 5’6″ and 195 pounds. Remember Joe Morris. He had a nice career.

  20. avatar Harvlis says:

I’m sure that many fans said the same thing about Wayne Chrebet. Woodhead put on an exhibition, on Thursday. Alot of us knew he had it in him. Schottenheimer didn’t even call plays to get him to the outside. Who knows what Woodhead could do, if the playcalls matched his skill set. That being said, I really hope that we hold on to Jehuu.

  21. avatar J-Kay says:

Could Woodhead be our punt returner? I’m personally not entirely sold on Leonhard in that role.

  22. avatar Steiny (NYC) says:

    From http://nyj.scout.com/
New York City – Jets WR Aundrae Allison blew out his right knee in the Jets-Eagles preseason games, and was put on injured reserve on Saturday. He will be out for the season. The injury occurred on a kickoff return.

  23. avatar Harvlis says:

    J-Kay,

I agree. I would rather they protect Leonhard and give Woodhead the job. Leonhard is the QB of the D-backfield. If we make it to the playoffs — then Leonhard can step in.

  24. avatar Brett Justin says:

damn man i didn’t realize that cummings didn’t make it..HOW did he not make it he had such a good pre season and hes still so young??

  25. avatar Cmart28 says:

I have to say, I’m very against some of these decisions. Keeping Izzo? WTF? He’s awful defensively, and isn’t even that good on teams anymore. Caulcrick, Cummings, Potter, Cook, and Allison are far better (not buying that Allison needed to miss the season).

  26. avatar chhuckss says:

I like woodhead- he will help the jets. Now that Allison is hurt. look for the jets to sign a receiver. The y may cut a TE and sign a new one. Also, they may cut a CB and sign a new one.

  27. avatar jetfan says:

hope they pick up ben watson, ronald curry and/or eric green

  28. avatar GREENBLOOD says:

After week 1 (Ellis) we have to cut one, after week 4 (Pace) 1 more.

    I agree – Izzo ?!?

  29. avatar Fitz says:

Woodhead has a lot of talent and work ethic. I think Rex and his coaches know a little more than the rest on here who think they know what they are talking about. BTW, which NFL team do you all work for that qualifies you to evaluate talent? TJ is going to be out of here in the not too distant future. Did anyone ever consider that? When Leon was first drafted, nobody thought he would amount to much because of his size. Boy did he shut a lot of people up. We let Woodhead go,and some A-hole like Belichick or Mangina picks him up, and he has a career year. They didn’t keep this kid on after his injury for nothing.

  30. avatar miketaliaferro says:

One point I keep not seeing:

If TJ gets hurt or is ineffective, you’ve got Greene.

But if ANYTHING happens to Leon that keeps him off the field, who steps in? Does that role vanish into thin air? Do you give TJ 35 carries a game? I don’t think so…

THAT’S what kept Woodhead on the roster, I believe. Leon insurance.

  31. avatar Bent says:

“Do you know how many guys have huge 4th preseason games and then get cut??? All of them!! ”

When Jesse Chatman rushed for 93 yards on 29 carries in last year’s Bollinger Bowl, everyone wanted him to make them team and (after a suspension) he did. Woodhead’s performance was far better.

What’s the point in even playing the game if you have a dominant performance like that and it still doesn’t help your chances? What more could he have done?

You don’t become the NCAA’s all-time leading rusher (albeit in a lower division) by being “just a small guy with speed”.

This might be a move with an eye on next year and if it is, I applaud the Jets for it. One more year removed from his knee blow-out and with a year (or even a few weeks before they put him on IR) to practice with the team and continue to bulk up could bring back that power he displayed in college and make him a candidate to have a role as the third down back. Drafting Keller and Shonn Greene were both moves made with an eye on the following season and perhaps this is another.

If it costs them a roster spot, big deal. The Jets aren’t the deepest team in the NFL, so the 53rd guy wouldn’t be any better than someone they could sign off any practice squad during the season and even then that guy might not get a chance to play unless there’s injuries and if it gets to that point, they would have been screwed even if they did keep an extra guy.

The Jets probably have a few more moves to make over the next week anyway, so Woodhead is still probably on the bubble, they’ve just deferred their final decision on him.

  32. avatar X says:

MY problem with woodhead is that he didnt shine in the preseason until the 4th game. The comparisons to leon are not warranted when in leons first preseason he shined all preseason. and was the best back on the roster with Curtis being injured. Woodhead was averaging low yardage before game 4… And right now he is a Luxury… Theres no reason to think woodhead could do that consistantly..

  33. avatar Disagree Completely says:

When you are adjusting to the speed of the NFL, it takes a few games to get used to it. Give the guy a break!!! He made the roster…now wait and see what he can do!!! Quit being haters

  34. avatar James in TN says:

Why in the hell is Hodges still here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Anybody?

  35. avatar DSmizzle says:

I love this Woodhead kid, but my concern is that he’s really a pure speed guy. On most plays where he is touched, he drops as if he’s been tasered.

Maybe I’m overstating that aspect. Admittedly, I was hosting a friend from college and only saw the game 4 highlights the next few days. From what I saw in previous action, I couldn’t envision him breaking tackles or even bouncing off people like Leon.

All that being said, if he can be used as a Punt Returner, and that roster spot isn’t needed elsewhere, I’m like everyone else who loves the story and his work ethic. In the end, we ARE debating the 53rd guy on the roster, and only really rabid fans typically do this. Us folks here at TJB spend much more time pondering these moves that involve guys who will likely be non-factors in 2009.

I agree with those who are in the ‘this spot should be used with an eye towards the future’ camp. Izzo is a guy that can be a real baller on Special Teams but you would hope that there are guys like Westerman who would be able to step it up and make him expendable. I’m torn on this because I view Special Teams as 1-3 of the game and Special Teams Demons to be starting NFL football players. Ask the Giants’ team that lost in the playoffs to the 49′ers a few years back on a bad snap whether Trey Junkin, their long-snapper, was a starter!

If Izzo makes a key play on kickoff coverage this year that prevents a TD, in reality, that plus-6 points of value he has added will likely surpass Cummings’ contributions this year due to our depth at LB (although I once again would have hoped that a guy with a future like Cummings could have proved worthy of making Izzo expendable).

Izzo is the ‘QB of the Special Teams’ like Leonhard is of the defense. These guys aren’t just running straight down the field with reckless abandon (except for the ‘Gunners’ or ‘Wedge-busters’, well to the extent there still are wedges). Special Teams takes a ton of talent and technique in how you run down the field.

Izzo can be like a coach out there.
