Will Woodhead (And Some Others) Make It?

With roster cuts due later today, JP Pelzman takes a look and writes an article, mostly about Danny Woodhead and whether or not he’ll make the team, but looks at some of the other bubble players as well. After Danny Woodhead tore it up the other night, he was all that anyone who actually watched the game was talking about (well after Sanchez’s smooth performance). Woodhead ran for 158 yards and score … all on just 18 carries.

But will it be a one-night performance? Besides Jones, Washington and ,Greene there also is starting fullback Tony Richardson. And because Richardson is 37, the Jets may elect to keep backup fullback Jehuu Caulcrick as insurance. But Greene, who sat out Thursday’s game, has battled injuries throughout the preseason, so the Jets may need to keep Woodhead.

“It always comes down to numbers,” Ryan said. “I don’t know what more he’s supposed to do. We’ll see. He had a heck of a game. He is tougher than nails. He works everyday. For a guy that overcame the injury like he had, you certainly pull for him.”

Woodhead missed his rookie season because of a knee injury. If he is waived, the Jets could try to re-sign him to their practice squad, but he would have to clear waivers for that to happen. That isn’t likely, considering former Jets coach Eric Mangini might claim him for the Browns.

Other players on the fence include linebackers Jason Trusnik, Kenwin Cummings, Brandon Renkart of Rutgers and veteran special-teamer Larry Izzo. Wide receiver Aundrae Allison, picked up after being waived by Minnesota last month, could stick around as he has shown explosiveness catching the ball and returning kickoffs.

Ryan’s mention of numbers is interesting, because months back during the offseason, Ryan mentioned the magic number when it came to running backs. Although I can’t find the quote now, the number he used was five. You can do the math, which means it comes down to Woodhead (a fourth runner) or Caulcrick (a bigger blocker and better ST body). Jehuu Caulcrick might be a player that they keep to protect themselves should the elder statesmen Tony Richardson need to sit, for any reason.

As far as Trusnik, Cummings and Renkart, I’d have to think that Trusnik and Cummings would be more likely to make the cut. As far as Izzo, I’ll be shocked if he makes the team.

  4. i believe murrel/Trusnik and cummings make Izzo expendable i like those 3 and hope they make the team and also im really pulling for woodhead the kid bulked up to 200 pounds and he has obvious talent…defently want him on the team..

  5. If Izzo makes this team, I believe that Westoff, has too much influence on this team

  6. I agree I don’t think Izzo is necessary to keep.

  7. definitely think we should find a spot for woodhead. His SPIRIT and HARD work are inspirational/contagious to the rest of the team.

  8. Kenwin Cummins is twice the player that Larry Izzo is at this stage in their careers…

  9. RKNYC – That link is premature. NO-ONE has made the team yet, even if they make it through today.
