Jets Announce Releases … Well Schefter Does it For Them

It keeps coming! Adam Schefter just announced the cuts the Jets made to tidy up the roster for their new arrivals.

To make room, Jets waived P Reggie Hodges, T Mike Kracalik, LB Brandon Renkart and RB Danny Woodhead. There goes the Rudy story.

Hodges, Kracalik and Renkart were not surprises (we’d pegged them in the previous post) but if the Jets really wanted to keep Woodhead, they would have found a way. Woodhead might be back, but you’d expect another team to claim him. How Larry Izzo is still on this team, I have no idea.

  1. I’m really mad that they waived Woodhead, how Izzo didn’t take his place I have no clue either.

  2. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. i don’t even get it. but let’s be honest here, i think technology has caused everyone to loose their minds…including mine. we are acting as if this is the draft. it is cutdown weekend. i love woodhead, but he wasn’t even going to see the field this year. all this internet, tweeting, and fancy websites has put us all in a frenzy. it’s ridiculous.

  4. stupid…..this is ridiculous!!!!!!

  5. Adem Schefter is the best at reporting news first from around the league.
Rich Cimini seems to be the 1st to report the jets news.

  6. Renkart looked good in the preseason, so I’m confused by Izzo getting the nod. I want to trust the reasoning behind the decision, but I will have to try to suppress my skepticism.

  7. Okay were back to even
    We have 4 QB’s and 11 Defensive Backs…
The backup Inside Linebackers are Jason Trusnick, Westerman and Larry “The Fossil ” Izzo. I believe that this is a strong endorsement for both Trusnick and Westerman..

  8. A couple of horrible decisions IMO. How is Izzo better than Renkart and Cummings. Caulcrick has more potential and has proven more than Davis.

The other 2 are OK IMO, as Woodhead just wouldn’t do much for the roster right now (maybe they can stash him away, if not, good luck to him elsewhere), and Kracalik became expendable with a 3rd TE, as Hunter isn’t needed there. But Caulcrick and Cummings deserve spots over Davis and Izzo. They earned it.

  9. alex morizio..

TOTALLY agree. There wouldnt even be a Rudy story without us blowing things out of proportion and blogging and tweeting our way to dissapointment. He had one good game and barely showed up in the games before. He is undersized and not NFL calibur. We need pros out there not nice stories. i want to win. Now Tanny, go get a pro number one receiver please.

  10. Agreed, Woodhead wasn’t going to contribute.

  11. One thing is clear – the Jets aren’t finished. It’s hard to evaluate these moves until they are.

  12. lets all calm down. depth is great. if the season comes down to trusnick, and izzo, get ready for a top five pick. the only important pick up is the punter. no one else is going to see the field.

  13. This punter situation doesn’t look good.

  14. when do we get reggie brown and corey ivy?!?!!?

    and who goes for them?

one is definatley going to be izzo but then does that mean kellen or ainge gets the boot as the 2nd?

  15. Cmart28
We certainly agree on the Izzo issue, its just a mistake.
I disagree on Caulcrick. The role of a FB in this offense is to block and Jehruu was a little soft. I though he had “McClain ” potential to run the ball, they experimented with him at H-back so I was hoping for some receiving potential. But Jehruu Caulcrick is not a glass eater, Jason Davis is , strictly a blocking FB, 10 games as a starter, should be a better special teams guy than JC

  16. you have to think cole or coleman will be the next one gone, it’s ridiculous. i would’ve rather seen renkart stick around.

  17. Very bizarre moves. Someone check Tannenbaum’s pipe, to see what he is smoking. Woodhead has more talent in his little finger than all four pickups combined.

  18. Larry Izzo has the 2nd most special teams tackles in NFL history, ahead of Buffalo Bills legend Steve Tasker. If Cummings, Trusnick, Caulcrick et al could do this monumentally important job they’d have made the team at Izzo’s expense, as they’d obviously prefer to keep those guys because Izzo’s only good for specials. But the guy has made the Pro Bowl 4 times. With the rule changes on special teams this year … yall don’t see the benefit at having a guy who is widely regarded as the best in the NFL at kickoff coverage?

  19. ok Im confused now this better make sense soon.

  20. With all the Izzo comments (who knows maybe he gets released anyway in the next few days) I think its an interesting enough debate to merit a topic on the blog.

  21. I have never seen a team with 4 QB’s. Its absolutely unnecessary. If we just carry 3 QB’s and all 3 get injured in the same game, we will still have Brad Smith as an emergency QB.
It’s a waste of a valuable roster spot.
O’Connel and Clemens are a wash.

  22. Just wasting everybody’s time…

  23. Kerry Rhodes continues to claim big news to come, won’t even tell Mangold on twitter

  24. aparently there is some big news…

according to nick mangold and kerry rhodes on twitter…

that we will all know soon…

my guess is that the jets trade oconell or clemens and some sort of draft pick for marshall or eddie royal

  25. Brian g- the Jets had 4 QBs last year- Ainge, Ratliff, Clemens, and Favre. I don’t necessarily agree with it but it’s not unheard of.

  26. I love Woodhead like everybody else but will people get serious please. The guy was the #4 tailback and the 3 guys ahead of him are all ten times better. Picking up a guy that might be a solid #2 FB or one that can be a #3 TE (and probably have more potential to contribute on specials) makes a lot more sense. Are Davis and Mitchell the right guys, will they pan out – who knows? But keeping Woodhead as the #4 tailback didn’t really make a lot of sense from a roster standpoint. My guess is that they kept him hoping that someone (are you listening Mangini) might have been willing to give up a 7th rounder after his performance the other night.

  27. kerry rhodes is really building up some anticipation. my guess is the jets are on the verge of getting an elite WR…

  28. EDDIE ROYAL. This aint no dream…stop it.

  29. I tell you, my heart goes out to these guys..They make the final roster, only to be cast off…I know it’s the nature of the business, but that has got to suck….

  30. well if the broncos keep on saying that marshall isnt for sale and he actually isnt, then royal would be the next WR i would guess the Jets would go for.

  31. I really hope Tanning-Bum hasn’t done something stupid. My heart can’t take anymore of this crap.

  32. CJ- Really. I dreamed of one day being a GM for a team but I can’t crush a persons dreams like that. Im to kind.
David Harris – How good is Eddie Royal anyway I have to admit I rode the hype for him?

  33. Why would Denver trade Royal? They would be left with a disgrunteled Marshall and no other credible WR. That would be an insane position to put themselves in.

  34. Randy Lange is saying on his blog that Woodhead cleared waivers and will make the practice squad. Surprised no one else claimed him after his great game Thursday.

  35. I’m starting to think that there might be something bigger afoot. Are the Browns about to trade Anderson (no, not to the Jets) and in need of finding a backup QB. If that were the case, then maybe O’Connell goes to the Browns as part of a package for Braylon Edwards.

  36. JVSN, that would just about make me happier than rooster on thanksgiving. But then that really means The jets planted Man-Genie.

  37. Green Lantern

Eddie Royal has the potential to be like Santana Moss in his prime. Thats my comparison, they are similar players.

  38. Just about every time has a player who stands out in the preseason especially the last preseason game. Its just that we hyped our guy alot just like the other teams did.

With regards to Kerry Rhodes, he is definitely playing with us. No ‘big’ news like this cant be leaked after a couple hours.

  39. David Harris- Thats pretty good..
Brian G- its a trust thing I guess because he said he wasn’t playing and told us to be patient. One person asked if it was a trade for Brandon Marshall and he said u may be right!!! (hint hint)

  40. Big news like Marshall getting traded (with players already knowing) in today’s day in age should be leaked either in New York or in Denver.

  41. Enough about Woodhead (Rudy)!

Westhoff needs Special Teams Izzo (Romo) to reek (roids) havoc of the field!!!

  42. The whole Rhodes thing make me very suspicous. I doubt Jets players are authorized to leak the team’s moves. If Rhodes is even hinting that they’re doing a deal for Marshall then I think that scenario is less, not more, likely.

  43. Mel – I’m not surprised Danny cleared waivers, because any team that needed a RB would have made a move from the initial pool of waived players. While he’s on the practice squad, a team can take him and put him on their active roster during the season.

There’s a chance that the Jets could re-add him if and when one of the QBs is traded/IR’d/released, but maybe they just felt he was one of the 53 best players on the team and having added these four today, he no longer is.

  44. There’s no way Rhodes would know about the move before it leaked out. I’d imagine he’s just being mischievous and will probably announce a new flight crew calendar or something.

  45. Woodhead cut = 2-14

  46. A new flight crew calendar wold be the best move of the day.

  47. I’m just glad Hodges is gone, YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!

  48. LOL…It looks like we have a punter better than the entire Bills first team offense.

Tim Graham on Trapasso’s fake/TD run:
“Little did anyone know at the time, on that play Trapasso would outscore the Bills’ first-team offense for the entire preseason.”

  49. But Bent — is there any way Rhodes could find out before the media? It’s possible a player was told that he’s going to Denver and he told Kerry it’s likely happening.

  50. And, how ’bout A.J. Trapasso?

An Ohio State rookie who hit the scoreboard in Dallas and ran back a fake punt for a touch down with the Titans.

Hopefully, he punts better than Nugent kicks, eh? Gotta be an upgrade over Hodges though!!!

Plus, we got a tight end! Gotta be an upgrade over Brown!

  51. Greg, I wouldn’t go that far. It’s more so that Woodhead cut mean the Jets are looping the same bad personnel habits and will continue to not even sniff a Superbowl.

  52. The news that Rhodes has is not Jets roster related.

  53. greg – I would still be surprised if it came together that quickly.

Maybe Leon signed! That’s my prediction.

  54. I hope Woodhead clears waivers and gets to be on the practice squad. Glad we upgraded punters too although I would have liked to see some head to head competition at that spot before calling the new guy an upgrade but it’d be pretty hard to be worse than Hodges.
Our running game will be tops this year are you guys really sure that we even need another wide recever?

  55. Woodhead is a class act and shouldn’t have been let go!! Good luck with that wonderful front office JETS fans…..

  56. A class act who is sitting on the bench doesn’t score any TDs.

  57. Not only that but they cut Caulcrick to get a mediocre fullback!!?? AND cut a crappt punter to sign a crappy punter…VERY interesting

  58. Mangold just replied “lol” to Rhodes’ twitter account.

    Rhodes played us all.

  59. You are reading it wrong Rhodes laughed at what Mangold said….

  60. jvsvn :
you don’t know that….all of you people are skeptics…NOBODY knows what could’ve been. All you do is complain about every move made….WOW….just watch for awhile and see what happens

  61. The people that think rhodes isnt informed about the jets moves are wrong. He’s probably the only jet that would know if anything roster related was happening! He always knows what is happening with the roster. The skeptics will say that he doesnt know and he is just bluffing but im pretty sure that if any sort of move is in the works that Kerry Rhodes would know. Im pretty sure it was like that last season too.

BTW i wouldnt be surprised if the Jets brass not only monitors but also influences what Jets players post on their twitter. Just my opinion, i would guess that the things Rhodes says the Jets must approve of, otherwise they would have confronted him to stop by now.

  62. No brian g

    Nick said

nickmangold@kerryrhodes no no no, no one follows this twitter stuff. It’ll be just between you and me, I swear.

and rhodes replied “lol” to that statement

  63. If there is not a trade at works then Tannenbaum needs to have his head examined!

An undisclosed draft pick for another QB?

  64. Rhodes was all on twitter telling fans about the Marshall trade last week saying we aren’t giving up Dave Harris for Marshall but we are still going after him.
But Braylon and Kerry are good friends it could be that to.
Who knows lets just wait and see.

  65. Also, doesnt this seem like a publicity stunt going on between Mangold and Rhodes?

You would think that if Mangold really wanted to know he would have just called Kerry up on the phone and avoided everyone seeing that a potential big move was about to happen.

They are either buttering us up or are about to say ‘psyche, we got you’

  66. These moves are fine. We all love the Jehuu Caulcricks and Dannywoodheads of the world because we’ve been following them for years and they’ve grown on us. The fact of the matter is that they’re depth players that likely would have had zero impact on this team. Additionally, going forward it will be easy to replace them with the castoffs from another team.

There’s nothing special about any of the guys that we released in the past couple of days. Stop freaking out about it. And wait until we’re finished making moves to evaluate things…this isn’t happening in a vacuum.

  67. If they say Sike im throwing my Rhodes jersey out the window…..then going to get it in 2 minutes when I calm down.

  68. Excuse me Mr. “Disagree”? Aren’t you the one that is complaining. Hello. If you read my posts on this topic you’ll see that I said cutting Woodhead was the right move to make. You’re the one “complaining” about it. Didn’t Woodhead just clear waivers? It seems every GM in the league doesn’t necessarily think he would be such a great addition. As I said, I love the guy, he’s a great story, hard worker, etc., etc. but the Jets already have 3 tailbacks on the roster that are better than he is. They have more important uses for that roster spot than having a 4th tailback who won’t see the field this season.

  69. how did he clear waivers that quickly…isn’t that a longer process than 3 hrs!??

  70. I can’t find anything on the Jets site or elsewhere on the web that Woodhead has cleared waivers. It’s a 24 hour process, isn’t it?

  71. I was thinking it was a three day process!!??

  72. I’m just quoting from MEL32601’s post above He states “Randy Lange is saying on his blog that Woodhead cleared waivers and will make the practice squad”

  73. i have a scenario.. loser of the quinn/anderson battle to the broncos, edwards to us and marshall to the browns? it makes sense.

  74. I’m with Green Lantern… except I’m going to call and cancel my order for my #25 jersey… then i’ll re-order it and pay the extra $15 bucks to have it delivered in 2 business days.

Never the less, I really hope he’s got something good to report. Whether its about Marshall, Edwards, or Leon Washington signing, like Bent said.

Any of those things would be good.

  75. nevermind that makes no sense the browns would be giving up two players.. but i guess it could still work with a high draft pick and maybe an old mangini player

  76. It’s 24 hours at this time of the year.

Maybe they released him 24 hours ago, but just didn’t announce it until now. That would have been a few hours after the conference call and thrown anyone looking for him to be released off the scent!

I trust Mel’s information, unless Lange himself was mistaken.

  77. maybe clemens and a 2nd to the browns for edwards..anderson and a mid round draft pick to the broncos for marshall. does that make any sense?

  78. Peter King says we are keeping 4 qb’s….I dont believe that..

  79. LJ I would help but Im horrible with three team trades..Im already bad with a regular one.

  80. haha yeah i cant keep track of all of this, but you know what i mean.

  81. we need to bombard kerry rhodes with astronomical amount of tweets… we gotta get this info out of him!

  82. Lantern – Hutch and Cimini’s sources said the same, for whatever that’s worth.

Lj – Nice try, I applaud your outside the box thinking!

As for Woodhead clearing waivers, I can’t find anything. Could it be old information that was found on Lange’s site (from when Woodhead cleared waivers last June)? Or maybe Lange made a mistake and removed that information. I did think it was a 24 hour process too!

  83. Look, if Danny Woodhead is getting meangingful carries for the Jets this year, something went wrong. Do I want to lose him? No. Clearing waivers would be a perfect scenario, as he is great depth for Leon.

Anyway, I think Marshall is coming, but not for Harris, obviously. O’Connell and an early pick. I don’t want him, but whatever, his upside is silly good and Marshall, Cotchery, Stuckey 1-2-3 is very formidable, and would still our biggest weakness after punter. That says something.

  84. The jets gave up a late round pick for O’Connell.
Now, if the broncos really wanted him, I am sure they couldve given up a little more to the lions and acquire him and then ask much more from the jets for marshall.

  85. About the practice squad thing- it was on Lange’s blog entry “Rounding Up a Full Day of Transactions” but he must have removed that sentence since it no longer mentions Woodhead and the PS

  86. Thanks Mel. Figured as much!

  87. brian g — exactly, they could have given up a 5th for o’connell… so now they are getting an early pick AND keeping 5th, and getting o’connell — and they rid themselves of the headache (and we receive it)

  88. Brian G,

Understandable statement regarding the broncos acquiring O’Connell themselves.

The only way I can play devil’s advocate to that is by referring to the rumor mill from this past week. It was leaked that for the broncos to trade Marshall, they wanted a player that could contribute now, and a draft pick that would help contribute later.

One could assume that from that statement, the Broncos weren’t willing to “mortgage” the future by offering more than a 7th round pick. For all we know they could have offered simply just a 7th rounder, but the Jets upped the offer to a 7th round conditional pick that could become a 6th or a 5th round pick.

The Broncos could have balked at matching that offer. But who knows.

  89. Thats a headache Id live with…..

  90. Well, you guys just about make me wanna puke up my corn-fed Nebraska beef steak. All these wannabe writers blogging away, upset that Woodhead gets waived. Get a life and move on. You sure won’t see Woodhead crying about it. He’s a professional and he can be proud of what he did with the Jets. He runs 4.3, but he’s not fast enough. He’s 200lbs, but not big enough. A rookie RB out of North Dakota is doing really good in the preseason. He’s fast, but only 5′6″ and 185. He’ll probably make the team. Nothing has been said about his size. Or Leon’s? Or Sproles’? Is there something else going on here? A few other writers on the Jets’ blogs have said that it is because of “another” reason, but I truly do not believe that to be the case.
Simply, he must be on the “right” team. As a friend of mine always said, “There’s a saddle for every seat.” Danny just has to find his saddle and it’s very clear that it is not with these coaches or “professional bloggers and writers.” NY writers and fans have for many years crucified athletes they don’t like. Many of these athletes have gone on to have great careers with other teams. It seems as though it has happened again. Just be quiet and let him play football. Somewhere else, of course. All he has ever wanted is to play football. Someone else will be smart enough to allow him to do that.
Oh yea, there are 2 other running backs in the NFL, from small D2 schools. Woodhead beat them both out for 2 consecutive Harlon Hill awards. Just thought you would like to know. Of course, being smart NY writers and bloggers you probably already knew that. Right. How do you guys find hats big enough for your heads?

  91. How about this Jets fans.
Realistically speaking, our Superbowl chance will come next year.
Why not give up a 2011 1st rounder (we should be in the playoffs that year) so it will be like a 20th or later pick.

Sanchez has 1 year of experience.
    RB’s Leon and Greene
    WR’s Cotchery and Marshall
    TE – Keller
    OL – Mangold and DBrick

The defense will still have Harris, pace, scott, revis, rhodes, lowrey, etc.

    Thoughts?

  92. Dave,

Goose Fraba, or Wooo Saaaa my friend.

This is friendly bantering between Jets fans a like, no need to let it get to you personally.

It will be ok Dave, I promise.

  93. Danny Woodhead is the new LittleJohn Flowers.

  94. link to rhodes twitter anyone?

  95. Marshall’s suspension was officially lifted today:

    http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Wilson-Broncos-reinstate-Marshall.html

This means someone else has to be cut. I think this is so he can play in the opener, rather than being a pre-cursor to a trade. If they were still considering trading him, they probably wouldn’t have made this move until the very last minute.

  96. joe – http://www.twitter.com/kerryrhodes

  97. Jimmy,
Really, it’s not personal. I don’t even know Woodhead. This makes the 4th time I have written in, so it is not as if I don’t have a life. Just can’t see myself spending all my time doing this.
Don’t worry, I will be OK. Hope all you guys can say the same. I really hope that Woodhead is claimed off waivers. According to the bloggers, he was never going to see the field this year. Just don’t know how you guys can know that. Good luck to you all. Out.

  98. Bent, I think the Broncos got a roster exemption… I thought I read that somewhere. Even if they did, they’re going to have to address the roster soon anyway.

  99. Rhodes updated his twitter account saying these types of things takes time and that he’s not trying to hold us up…..we shall see.

    Very interesting

  100. Rhodes has us really going here….Can this be a pub stunt or is there more to this? Thinking either, Marshall, Royal or Edwards…I think this story has juice….I am checking my twitter acct every 20 min….LOL

  101. IM Going Nuts if its Eddie Royal. But its most likely Marshall or Edwards…Yea Kerry does have us going here.

  102. royal doesnt make sense.

But as Bent said above, if theres any news, it’ll be something like Leon getting a new deal (this Leon tipping off Rhodes on the possible deal)

  103. That actually makes sense but it has to deal with Marshall or another WR he said u may be right!!! (Hint Hint) when someone asked if it was Marshall.

  104. If it is true, then this is the most amazing things for this story not to be leaked or rumored at all.

  105. That’s why I’m skeptical about it… how often do “blockbusters” happen without any type of leak occurring? Very strange… all I know is that the big announcement better not be the New Kerry Rhodes Clothing line, or he just won the Super Bowl in Madden 2010…

    I’ll be quite annoyed

  106. Richard Seymour to Oakland….There was no leak news for that.

  107. Very true, I might have spoke to soon… but never the less, a trade involving Marshall having no leaks would be astonishing

  108. but all the ‘insiders’ have been on top of the whole marshall story the entire preseason and when the deal is supposedly about to go through, not one ‘insider’ has a clue about it?
    That’s why I doubt it.

The thing Rhodes is talking about involves someone/something in the organization (e.g: Leon new contract)

  109. i agree with brian g…it’s probably leon’s new contract

  110. mangold just updated his twitter – “I must tell you all ignorance is bliss. Now I have to keep a secret that I’d love to share but I need to investigate futher. Good things tho”

  111. 7 more days ……

  112. oh well im gonna be wondering what it is all night now… why cant these things ever get done by midnight?

  113. Enough with the Woodhead hype

  114. Disappointed about the Woodhead cut..but I agree with the post that ‘every saddle has a seat” and I will gladly follow Danny’s career no matter which team he winds up with..I think he is going to make a mark in this league. He just needs a team that will use him in ‘open space’ rather than as an ineffective bowling ball between the tackles.

  115. “Bent, I think the Broncos got a roster exemption”

    It expires today.
